Yes, nothing to hang onto the wall with though - no handles!
Remember diving under your little wooden desk during a bomb scare drill?
That was comforting. Especially since one whole wall of my schoolroom consisted of windows.

Yeah...Duck and Cover! Would protect you in case a nuclear bomb went off in the schoolyard! If you were riding your bike you had to get to the curb and duck and cover. Personally at that age I'd felt better if I could crawl under my bed.

budget restraints, older buildings, etc. is why there are not normally storm shelters in schools, even for those areas who experience a high volume of tornadic activity.

Sadly, everything boils down to money.

If you could see my tax bill you'd fall over. Come to think of it, our schools don't have basements either. I don't know what the h they do with the money. I know they wasted it when times seemed good (prior to 2003/4). Very poor planning and lack of thinking ahead for the rainy day period.

About 10 minutes ago on CNN a reporter on the scene said they haven't brought anyone out of the school in about an hour and a half :(

You know...the more I think about this "lack of shelter" because of money.

I get it. Storms like this are few and far between, and MANY schools in every town across the country.

But what if they could make them "safe rooms" - might be tight but still - that kids could go into whether a storm, or other impending doom like a shooter! Which sadly, seems to happen more often than these violent storms.

And with the earth telling us on a WAY too often basis that these storms are not just a "cycle" but a new way of life...I don't know what the answer is. It's just devastating when it happens. No matter that it rarely happens. It has happened now.

OTOH, as has been mentioned, tornados are not actually something that can be pinpointed to a certain area...and a place that is demolished might not have had a tornado EVER!! Not like hurricanes or earthquakes which happen on fault lines.

A tornado is in fact my worst nightmare.

Not me, couldn't let a foot or arm dangle even one bit over the edge of the bed. Whatever was under there might grab me!

Hi guys....just to let you all know that this has been on our morning news over here for at least an hour now, however no fatalies have been mentioned..........in fact they are only showing pictures but no information released.

So I know that a lot of us here in Australia are worrying about what we might be going to hear and our thoughts are with people who have been affected. The coverage looks shocking and I really hope that not many lives have been lost.

A tornado is in fact my worst nightmare.

It makes me made when places HAVE basements filled with so much stuff you can't use them for shelter! Save the ancient typewriters, desks, and yep 25 year old IBM machines but the employees are risking their lives in the hallways. And when a tornado is approaching to h*ll with the city regulations saying basement only holds 50 people. Squeeze another 50 in!

I think Corundogs in the near future we will be able to have 'severe weather' days for certain areas, like we do for snow storms. I can remember the only tornado warning was 20 minutes AFTER an area had been hit. Today there is more warning time. It is frustrating.

Were they at a stop n go?
Around here they shut down gas pumps and bank drive throughs in severe weather. Due to flying glass. They lock their doors and

please be safe everyone, call and check on your friends and relatives, if they are in the paths of any of these storms caution them to be alert, keep TV or radio on and heed any warnings.

Off to the grocery store, hoping to get home before severe storms arrive. As long as there is power I will check in.
