Crazy. Never been in a tornado, but I'd think there would be some kind of warning or do they just pop up when on top of you?
It's a strange phenomenon.
If there is any sizable risk in your county...the sirens go off. Some places, it's more specified than that - maybe by neighborhood or area. But I currently live in a county that if anywhere in the county, all sirens go off. And it's not even for a tornado touchdown...severe weather that could possibly produce one.
It's frustrating - cause the sirens going off is SCARY!!!!!!!!!!! When they go off at night, it's REALLY scary cause you can't see anything coming. If the power goes out and you don't have TV to tell you, you better have a radio!!!
But the local area weather is key to survival. They tell people where the chance of one happening and what time...say, town A at 6:56, town B at 7:01, town C at 7:13, etc.
But even within each town, chances of a tornado touching down are still slim to none. Just the chance.
When they have confirmed touchdown, they definitely make that known. During outbreaks like what happened today...spotters are EVERYWHERE! But it's a large area. Have to rely on radar.
Yes, there is warning if you are paying attention to local news...and are somewhere to be safe. It's when you aren't - outside riding your bike, playing at a park, doing any number of things. Most people in areas where a tornado is possible pay attention, and you can see/feel when severe weather is going to come up.
They are saying that this particular tornado had about 12 minutes of warning. That's not very long if you aren't sitting in your house ready to get into a safe place!!
