So far have not heard of any tornadoes in Arkansas. Just checked internet news for you and no tornadoes. Cell phone service may be down. Daughter's friend in Oklahoma has spotty cell phone service.

Thanks so much Show Me! To all of you in dangers path, my prayers are with you. Please be safe. This is so heartbreaking.

Benton and Washington counties in AR are under a Tornado Warning. Downgraded to a Tornado Watch.

DAMN! A 9 yo girl from one of the schools has no parents there with her yet. They have been unable to reach.

She must be terrified!

She is in Benton county. Thank you for the update, although I wish it were dufferent info. She just moved there two months ago from so cal. Prayers continue for all of you and my lovely daughter.

They recovered 7 children from the bottom of the school... in a pool of water.
They drowned? :tears:
20-30 more children's bodies expected to be pulled out.

I don't understand how these schools don't have a storm shelter in them! I mean, it's not like we are talking about a place that has never been hit before, or isn't hit repeatedly! I mean, I guess it's about money.

But is that an acceptable answer? Makes NO SENSE!

Media keeps asking locals if there are basement areas, etc. I mean, is there not ANY school that is equipped for severe weather like this??? I get it's hard to build basements in the area. But I know for a fact that a friend who lives (well did about 8 years ago!) in Moore had a storm shelter in their backyard. Her husband built it after the 1999 tornado. If a private citizen can do it, why aren't schools required to have something?

I know. How does a child hold on to a wall! How does anybody hold on to a wall????

A picture from Moore OK was found in Broken Arrow. Over 125 miles away, per HLN

Crazy. Never been in a tornado, but I'd think there would be some kind of warning or do they just pop up when on top of you?

They can. One time hubby and I were eating dinner, our dog was going crazy like we had never seen before. We looked out the front door to the west, Blue clear sky but not one bird, insect or anything was making a noise. Looked to the east and there was a dirt filled tornado below a pea green cloud maybe a quarter of a mile away and heading towards us! We heard no train noise or anything.

Best to be alert during severe storm times, always thinking of a shelter no matter where you are, work, store on the road. Have a plan. Listen to the media, have a weather radio is best.

At least 11 confirmed fatalities...
I don't know if the 7 pulled from the school are actually included in that...
We've been hearing 10 for a while.
Then the 20-30 more left in the school.

It's a strange phenomenon.

If there is any sizable risk in your county...the sirens go off. Some places, it's more specified than that - maybe by neighborhood or area. But I currently live in a county that if anywhere in the county, all sirens go off. And it's not even for a tornado touchdown...severe weather that could possibly produce one.

It's frustrating - cause the sirens going off is SCARY!!!!!!!!!!! When they go off at night, it's REALLY scary cause you can't see anything coming. If the power goes out and you don't have TV to tell you, you better have a radio!!!

But the local area weather is key to survival. They tell people where the chance of one happening and what time...say, town A at 6:56, town B at 7:01, town C at 7:13, etc.

But even within each town, chances of a tornado touching down are still slim to none. Just the chance.

When they have confirmed touchdown, they definitely make that known. During outbreaks like what happened today...spotters are EVERYWHERE! But it's a large area. Have to rely on radar.

Yes, there is warning if you are paying attention to local news...and are somewhere to be safe. It's when you aren't - outside riding your bike, playing at a park, doing any number of things. Most people in areas where a tornado is possible pay attention, and you can see/feel when severe weather is going to come up.

They are saying that this particular tornado had about 12 minutes of warning. That's not very long if you aren't sitting in your house ready to get into a safe place!!
