Sheriff refocuses Kyron investigation: a smaller task force will take over...

Hmm regarding DY reading TH support sites etc,

I suppose if were convinced TH took my child and had help I may spend countless midnight hours looking for any hint or tip that they may be posting on such a site, or someone who knows them inadvertingly letting something slip that could be useful. If for no other reason than to feel i'm doing something :(

As for Le agencies declining help I would imagine with having a husband in LE she is well aware of budget restraints and the reality of them possibly fuelling her need to start fundraising to assure that monies are available for the remaining task force to tap into rather than allowing it to dwindle down to one or two detectives.

ALL JMO

man, who knew it was all so complicated

you'd figure these systems and agreements would be already in place, instead of wasting time, resources, energy on figuring it out in the public eye

maybe all the agencies could get together privately & hammer it out before the next kid goes missing ...

I agree-this was handled horrendously, I don't care if the sheriff felt pressured to speak; he should have known what he was talking about or delayed his press conference. It makes me doubt all of his insinuations that day.

There is a study from Johns Hopkins that shows that a hospitalised child without health insurance is 60% more likely to die than a hospitalised child who does have health insurance.

The same study estimated that 1000 children die every year in the USA due to lack of health insurance.

http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes....sq=johns hopkins uninsured child study&st=cse

To the parents of those 1000 children, it probably seems pretty obscene that over $1 million dollars in tax money has been devoted to one single child. If uninsured children are distributed evenly throughout the 50 states, then Oregon lost 20 children to lack of health insurance last year.

That same $1 million dollars would easily have bought health insurance for more than just 20 children. Figuring $4000/child, that would be 250 more children insured.

Kyron's plight, the anguish of KH and DY, etc, are heartrending. But so is the plight of the many children in Oregon who need more help and are not getting it, it's just that their plight is much less visible to the average person.

I wish it were not a zero sum game but that's the way we have chosen to set up our civilisation.

Thanks are not enough, GrainneDhu. In Oregon, DHS may have to drop thousands of families off of TANF next year, through no fault of those families, just because the money isn't there. People can only receive TANF if they have kids, and it is typically reserved already for the very most desperate--people jobless so long they can no longer receive unemployment, people who have become disabled and are waiting for their disability SSI to be approved, people who have had things suddenly go terribly wrong in their lives or who never had a chance to start with because of generational poverty. The maximum benefit isn't even enough to cover rent for many families and so to lose it entirely will be devestating to so many. My friends in social service agencies expect to see many, many more homeless kids and families in the near future with the situation as dire as it is here. Thank God we at least have a law providing subsidized health coverage for every child in our state, but I am afraid even that may be rolled back shortly.

Watching the news last night with one eye open....long day! They said they will be officially announcing the task force early this week but the team is already working the case. They stressed "continuity" of the investigation process....etc, etc.

Yes, Portland PD has been one of the agencies that has assisted from early on, so as usual, McCain is spouting off inaccuracies as he tries to make himself look & sound like the expert. I really wish he'd stop, but he's more or less like all the talking heads that weigh in ad nauseum on this case. They all (the talking heads) need to do some fact-checking before opening their mouths.

IMO, many of McCain's statements are politically motivated.

Good grief, and I thought maybe he actually KNEW something! Why in the heck does the media keep quoting this guy if he doesn't know what's going on! :waitasec: Where in the heck are the good reporters out there?
