I loved Christmas when my children were younger. They believed in Santa for a very long time and Christmas morning was always magical. As the years passed, it was harder and harder to get them together to go pick out the Christmas tree. I loved decorating the tree and always bought ornaments in threes so they would each have an ornament collection to share with their own families when the time came.

I realized in 2009 when I was so sick, that it was really just my thing. No one went out and got a tree. No one put out the Department 56 villages. I think my husband did get a wreath, but I can't be sure. Now with the Christmas season arriving before Halloween, I am more bah humbug. It used to be so much fun.....

This Christmas will be the first Christmas that my husband and I wake up with no little ones in the house, and that is depressing. My 23 yr old still lives with us, but my other daughter has moved out with the kids. They will be in their new home by the holidays. It is going to be so, so different and very quiet. I usually get excited for Christmas morning but that excitement wont be there this year.

Unfortunately, I need help physically. I can't bend and reach like before. One of these Christmases...

We have an artificial tree. People think it is real once the tree skirt is on and it is decorated. Some are pre-lit and you do not have to struggle with stringing the lights. Have you considered one? Then there are the pine scents that you can spray to make it smell like a real tree.

BBM :floorlaugh: My older son received a present from "Santa" every Christmas morning until he got married. We always opened gifts from the family on Christmas Eve- after dinner, but my older son knew he would get a present from "Santa" in the AM. We did this because, even tho' I knew he didn't believe in Santa anymore, I wasn't a liar and there really is a Santa . I knew he knew it was me (we never spoke about it and "Santa" used only Santa wrapping), but- as I said- I'm not a liar :floorlaugh:.

Hey Yes, he was married by 32yrs. his wife brought his gifts here so he wouldnt find them.:laughcry: he started looking at 3yrs. :floorlaugh:

I think it was called the Blue Law and I wish they would bring it back.

That's right- blue laws

I don't know why they stopped it, so I looked it up:
***************************************************
Sunday shopping has its main argument in the consumer welfare. Extended opening hours afford more time to individuals in order to make their choices. They allow individuals to avoid peak shopping hours and having to queue in their free time.[1]
Public authorities hurt consumers by keeping stores from choosing their opening hours according to their market presumptions of consumers' demand. According to OECD, demand has strongly evolved towards greater flexibility, also due to a greater diversity of working hours in the economy in general, as well as to a higher female labour participation in the labour market.[2] Before the liberalisation of shop opening hours in a country like Austria, for example, one could observe an increase in cross-border shopping towards countries with more liberal shopping hours...
Many in the United States have reduced hours of operation on Sundays in some form or another. A few local municipalities still prohibit Sunday shopping. Some local jurisdictions have regulations on if and when bars and restaurants may be open on Sundays.
One of the last major areas to completely prohibit Sunday shopping is Bergen County, New Jersey.[33] This area contains one of the largest and most popular commercial shopping cores of the New York metropolitan area (for example, one of four local IKEA stores is found here, the store is the only one in the United States to be closed on Sunday, and is also home to four large shopping malls). Ironically, the area is not considered to be particularly very religious compared to the U.S. population at large, and it also has significant Jewish and Muslim populations whose observant members would not be celebrating the Sabbath on Sunday. Attempts to repeal the law have failed as many locals either like to keep the law on the books as a protest against the growing trend of increased Sunday shopping activity in American society or fear the potential increase of Sunday traffic on major local roads such as Route 4 or Route 17. Some local Orthodox Jews who are off both days of the weekend have complained about the law because it limits their ability to get shopping done on the weekend without having to travel to a neighbouring county as religious beliefs prohibit shopping on Friday night or on Saturday before sunset, which in the summer can be right before most department stores and malls close.
North Dakota has one of the US's toughest blue laws: stores must be closed from midnight to noon on Sundays. This was changed in 1991, before which all sales were prohibited for the entire day.[34]
Two states still prohibit retail alcohol sales in stores on Sundays through measures having ties to blue laws:
Indiana
Georgia

YesorNo, enjoy!! I love their whoppers. If I ate what you did (sandwich) I'd spend a week in the hospital. No kidding. I love all of that. the other day Sun.. we had KFC, I also ate macaroni salad, green beans, and some cole slaw. up all night with the trots!! I dont like going into the stores when Christmas stuff is out. Makes me sad. I honor the time as birth of Christ it means a lot to me but decos' no. Would you believe when Joey was 32 we had to hide his presents :floorlaugh: He loved Christmas. :seeya:

Made me smile about having to hide the presents from Joey when he was 32.

There is something magical about Christmas that can bring out some sweet, sweet things in people (but there are some Scrooges in the world).

We grew up with an album of Christmas carols by the Ray Conniff singers. I remember my grown-up, but still single brother coming home one day and racing up and down the stairs singing "Christmas Bride". It was funny and sweet at the same time. A treasured memory of a beloved brother who is no longer with us.

I remember our first "different" Christmas morning. I have an older brother and younger sister. The first year my brother was married and living on his own....we had to wait until later Christmas Day for him and his wife to come over for lunch and presents. I'm still a little bitter about that!

We all evolve and create our own traditions but it's not easy.

M, are you feeling any better? Breathing easier?

Like poo :( Stayed home today and thought I was well enough to do a little grocery shopping, get out for a little while. Thought I was going to die by the time I got home! Get out of breath just walking a few steps.

Not sure what I'm going to do about work tomorrow. I have a desk job which helps but still. Just don't want to get in trouble at work.

I don't even put up a tree anymore. Hubs hates all holidays. No gifts, nothing. It is extremely depressing. Bah humbug. The things you do to keep peace.

Can't you get a note from the MD?
You really need to rest or it will get worse.

Too bad, Kensie. Holidays are a wonderful breather from real life's struggles. We all need diversions sometimes.

I got some exciting news today. For those of you that remember, my son studied abroad this past July and had to write a paper as part of the study. Well, his paper is getting published in a Historical Review. Had to share my exciting news.

When I was five years old, I had a friend who was Jewish and she told me that there was no Santa Claus. I was so upset, I hid under her bed and it took a lot to get me out from under there.

I don't know how, but my belief in Santa was restored and I believed until I was eleven years old. One of the presents I got was a pair of mitten with a price tag from Youth Colony on it. I can remember sitting on the back steps in the cold and crying. My mom came out and talked to me and somehow she made it magical for me, so that I knew my mommy and daddy were Santa Claus and most important of all, they were love. I remember hugging her.

When my son was ten and just on the edge of not believing, I really wanted to do something to help keep the magic. I asked my sister to come before she went to my parents house for Christmas Eve dinner and put out the presents under the tree. She did this after my son and I left for dinner. It was so much fun to come back home and see the expression on my son's face when he saw all those presents under the tree! It worked for that night at least!

i hope you feel better. if you aren't up for going to work you should just get a doctors note and that should suffice. most work places require a note if you are out more than a day or two. i'm not sure if you are contagious or not. what you could do, if you are worried about getting in trouble, is go in in the morning and then after an hour or two tell the boss that you are feeling really ill.

i would bring in a doctors not tmw if you have one, or some form of proof you were in the ER and treated for bronchitis (i think thats what it was sorry if i messed up). Normally i wouldn't show an employer something sensitive like that, but it's bronchitis so it's not like it was something super super super female sensitive or embarassing (imo). They prob won't even read the thing anyway, once they see its from the ER you will be fine.

when i was very sick when pregnant with my son, and knew i couldn't make it a full work day, i'd go in the am to work and then around 10 i would go to my supervisor and tell her i had to go home and would try to make it to lunch hour (then i'd go home) that way i saved more sick time and didn't look like i was slacking off since i made the effort to try to come in. worked like a charm everytime!

anyway, i hope you feel better soon!!!

Aww, YoN, you made me laugh and cry at the same time! Yes, that is the song. It was so funny to hear my bro singing it...corny song, my stoner brother. LOL.

Thanks for doing that, she types through the tears.

:therethere: :blowkiss:

I can actually see your funny brother running up and down the stairs singing. What a wonderful memory for you. :heartbeat:
