Hi, Becky :seeya:
What have you been up to?
I've been enduring the most brutal winter I've ever experienced.:scared: I know it's a bit of a bore to talk about the weather, but these last three months have been insane. I live on the Canadian prairies (although I grew up in Vancouver--hat tip to ElleElle!). It's been -30 (Celsius) since mid-December with wind chills every day in the -40s and even occasionally the -50s. :tantrum::tantrum: This is crazy! Today was a "warm" day, the first in a long, long time: only -15!!
I've been watching the crazy weather in the US, too. I really hope that makes the climate change deniers think again.
Anyway, next week I'll be in your country for a few days, and I'm really looking forward to it.
Thanks for listening to my rant! :seeya:
My son gave me a great big hug and made me brownies for
Valentine's Day. :blowkiss:
(of course he ate 3 of them already. They are really good.
I had 2 pieces myself. :floorlaugh![]()
Ah, sons and their mom. My son is so sweet: he gives me very thoughtful gifts on my birthday and Christmas, and then the next day asks me for money! Of course, I can only smile and get out my wallet.
What universities is your son applying to? Mine is in Montreal, finishing his MA. He wants to do his PhD, and has applied to five universities, all in the US. Yikes! American tuition fees are crazy expensive, and so I told him he had better get some scholarships, because I don't have the big bucks!

You poor thing.
And I thought we have it bad.
How do you manage to stay warm?
And how does your car start? :scared:
I don't have a car because I don't really need one. I walk everywhere, which I enjoy (depending on the weather, of course), and I live only three blocks from where I work. Here, car owners "plug in" their cars during the winters: that is, they have a small block heater that sits on top of the car's engine, keeping it from freezing.
As for staying warm, I wear layers and layers of clothing and, when I get to work, take off the added layers. Luckily I have my own office, so I can do my daily strip tease in private! :floorlaugh: Then, when I get ready to walk home, I layer up again. In all my layers I look like the Michelin tire man, but I don't care because everybody else looks just as bad! Back in January, one morning when I walked to work the wind chill was -54!!! Those were the longest three blocks. :scared:
He's applying for his masters in social work @ 3 colleges for this Fall:
Binghamton Univ. -up here.
Adelphi- in NYC- will live with his father.
Fordham Univ.- in NYC.
Masters cost a lot of money- from $30,000 to $60,000 (and no stipends)
He'll have to take out loans. I'm poor. :floorlaugh:
Most PHD's in the USA will pay for your son with stipends for his research, so it won't cost him anything or not much.
What is your son studying?
What universities?
$30,000 to $60,000--wow, that is just crazy! Tuition fees here are about $3,000 to $5,000 annually. I've always been impressed with American parents who somehow manage to send their children to university.
Mine is studying philosophy, and has applied to DePaul, Vanderbilt, Boston U, NYU, and I forget the fifth (oops). He chose these unis because of specific individuals in their Philosophy Dep'ts he wants to study under.
Some individuals scoff at my son for studying philosophy because they say it's not "practical" and won't get him a job. But I've always told him to study what his mind loves, and the rest will fall into place. Besides, a university education is not the same as job training. But maybe I'm old fashioned.
:seeya:
You be in Winnipeg? If so, that is where I grew up.
Stay tough... brutal, Canadian winter windchill thickens your blood.![]()
I can't imagine that kind of cold.
I can't take the cold- and I can't take the heat, either. :floorlaugh:
Move here- at least we only have to endure -14F (what's that in celius? about -25).
He could always teach at a university with his PHD in philosophy.
NYU and Boston U are good univ. Don't know much about the others, but he should always pick the univ with the professors that match what/who he wants to study with. Very smart, your son- indeed.
Yes! I'm like you--I can't take the cold AND I can't take the heat. And summers here are hot and humid, always in the +30s. I hate sweating, it always makes me feel grubby and icky.
I'm obviously living in the wrong place, but I'm here because of my job, of which there are very few, and so beggars can't be choosers.
Do you live in upstate NY? If so, I lived across the lake from you in Kingston, Ontario, when I was an undergraduate. I remember how Lake Ontario could produce huge dumps of snow. I also remember sometimes taking the Wolfe Island ferry to New York with friends on a whim--just to get a burger or drink some beer or whatever. Those were the days when crossing the border wasn't what it's like now: all we had to produce was some photo ID (I even remember using only my university ID) and usually the border guard was some pleasant gent in his late 50s or early 60s who spoke like Frank Morgan in The Wizard of Oz.
I must sound like an old geezer, musing about the good ol' days when life was simple. :floorlaugh:
Yes, that's what he wants to do. And, yes, he's verrrry smart, but I'm biased! Of course. :floorlaugh:
Becky
Just want to warn you about NYU- it's in NYC and even with his tuition being paid and a stipend for expenses, apartments are very, very expensive in the city. He'll maybe have to live in a closet for $1000 per month (if he can even find one for that amount) or more- never mind the rest of the expenses. :scared:
Well- good luck to your son.
Time for bed.
Goodnight :seeya:
Time for bed- again.
It was good talking, Becky.
Come more often to chat.
Not too many people here like it was when the trial was on- so it's normally pretty slow. Use to be a hopping place in the good old days (says the old geezer- :floorlaugh
