Hi, run an empty tub with vinegar water~
I need some advice. Since I sold my filly for a nice chunk of change, I am using the money to update my house. I should have done this a long time ago, but horses have been the priority. My kitchen floor is hardwood, and the person I had do the floors 3 years ago did a lousy job and the finish is off, the color is orange/brown UGH. Should I keep the hardwood or change it to Travertine tile? The dogs go through the kitchen all the time to get to the laundry room where the dog door is. Does anyone have a tile floor? And do you like it? Thank you so much!
ETA: My cabinets are furniture grade cherry, with a deep brown hue. I am replacing the island with a glazed ivory maple cabinets and putting Cambria Windermere Quartz on the countertops.
Zuri, your kitchen plans sound beautiful. I would think dogs would do less "damage" to tile with their nails and mud-tracking if that is a concern. Easier to wipe tile? I really do not know, though.
WHAT is going on with ads interspersed between our posts now? :stormingmad: This is driving me nuts at a time I cannot handle changes very well. Don't they know I have too much going wrong already? :chuckle: (guess they don't cater just to me, hey?)
Lost a very dear Aunt this morning. What a week it is. sighhhh
Hi Zuri, we have wood floors throughout our house except our kitchen, baths, and laundry room. In those rooms we have tile. I like tile, I just regret the particular tile I chose for my kitchen as it is a light color and shows every spec of dirt, etc., and my dog tracks in a lot of stuff, lol. I had picked out a darker tile which was a warm tan with a little goldish and some splashes of terra cotta, it was really pretty and I loved it. Unfortunately, when we received the actual tile, the color was pink and totally clashed with my counter tops. And what's worse, is the tile had already been laid when I saw it ! :gaah: I said, so what, this isn't what I ordered and I absolutely refused to accept it, so my husband and an employee tore it out themselves, and what a job that was :scared: Then the sorry @#*^&$#^% tile company refused to give us a refund even though I had six separate samples to prove the tile color was defective, so I was like wow! Really !? :gaah: I still to this day get all upset when I think about it and that was over five years ago.
My point being, if you choose tile be sure you look at it before it is installed as the samples themselves are definitely not always reliable. Then if the color is off you can return it if it hasn't already been installed. I would not wish what we went through on anyone, what a nightmare ! :scared: Also, you might not want a really light color like what I ended up with, I just chose it because of the disaster with the first tile, and it's all I could find in a hurry. Good luck ! :seeya:
BBM I had a Downy ball years ago, but never used it and eventually lost it (?) or threw it out.
Amazon has them for sale:

My husband and I really like old homes like yours, and love that tiger oak fireplace. They don't make them like that anymore. So you put new wood over your old floor? It turned out really well. Back in the 90's we built a house and did the floors in old pine, 6 inch wide boards. We loved it, though being a soft wood it did scratch rather easily, but we didn't really mind as it just added to the character. Funny how people pay big money for pre-done floors that have been distressed and with big grooves carved in them now, :giggle: . Go figure !
If you are doing tile to hardwood, I suggest a separator that is flush to the floor vs. those that have a hump. This white piece (it is not wood, it is some type of stone???) showing is from my laundry room to the back hallway. I did as others suggested for tile, and did a darkish tile with a dark grout as I bring in Georgia clay from the yard when walking in from the garage through the laundry room.

OK, I'll put in my two cents as to putting in tile vs. hardwoods in your kitchen. I thought the same think when I redid mine. But I went with hardwood and OMG OMG it made the house look twice as large as the rooms flowed into each other with the same flooring. It was a SHOCK afterwards as to how large everything was once I did it. Plus, I don't like the cold on my feet from tile, unless you live in Florida. And I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so standing on tile does indeed hurt my back.
And as to horror stories on putting in hardwoods... I purposefully went with a company that had a storefront so that they would not be "fly by night" installers in case I had a problem. (Putting in these pecan floors was over $10k, so wanted to ensure it was done RIGHT) Anyhoo, glad I did such as I had to have the installers RIP OUT the job twice when 1/2 finished each time.... a long story ... but so glad I did such and was able to get the owner out to review and make right (FYI first issue was the used the wrong sized trowel for the glue that was not specs to the installation... "not according to industry standards" and second time did not level kitchen as requested)
Off to do my laundryand waste water.... 'cause I can!
ETA: Trying to turn picture! :gaah: can't figure out how to rotate...GOT IT after 3 tries

OMG That pecan floor is just BEAUTIFUL !!!
I would love to have that flooring on my torn vinly kitchen and I would do just as you say and I would rip out my carpeted living room and let the wood flow right into the living room to make things look bigger. I just need to hit the lottery to be able to do it. LOL
I see exactly what you mean how it makes things look bigger. I could tell that just by how the wood angles around the corners.
TOTALLY AMAZING AND BEUUTIFUL!!!
Grout sealer.
