6 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Garden Gnomes
One place outright bans these wily (but, yes, divisive) creatures.

Like pink flamingos, the garden gnome has gone from "tacky" to "charmingly kitschy" in the span of a few decades. These adorable little statues, while not as fancy as an exquisitely sculpted urn, bring a whimsical element to any outdoor space.

1. They're (way) older than you think.
Though they seem like a fun '50s or '60s fad, the garden gnome came into being in Germany in 1872. They were named Gartenzwerge (garden dwarfs), a word that sounds exactly like a sneeze.

2. And they're still big in Germany. Really big.
There's an estimated 25 million gnomes in yards across the country.

3. U.S. production of gnomes came to a halt during World War II.
They were a little too associated with Germany.

4. They're banned from one of the world's most famous garden shows.
The Chelsea Flower Show frowns upon the figurines, forbidding them from appearing in designs — except in 2013 when they honored the anniversary of the gnome.

5. They're part of the grand old tradition of "Gnome Roaming."
You'll know this from both the 2001 movie Amelie and the Travelocity ad campaigns. It involves taking a gnome from a neighbor's yard and periodically sending photos of the gnome on its travels. (Gnomes have even made it to the South Pole.) There doesn't seem to be a clear reason to do this other than the eternal question of "Why not?".

6. There's a sanctuary for the statues in England.
The Gnome Reserve, a garden featuring 2,000 various gnomes, remains a popular tourist attraction in North Devon.

Judging by that little known fact, I am so below average that I wouldn't even register
It's not very far to my bathroom and back to my computer chair that's in the kitchen.

Happy Friday WS Friends!
:loveyou:
Haven't been around this neck of the woods much since the theater shooting trial (refuse to say or type his name or initials anymore). I do however stop by from time-to-time and lurk.

Well, I have a question re #281129 prison life . Yesterday, during the heat of the day, while drinking some nice icy-cold water loaded with ice cubes, this thought came to me: I would miss ice-water if I could never have it again. Which led to this question: I wonder what kind of water JA drinks. Is it from the tap? Does she have ice cubes? May sound like a silly question, but many of us who live in hot, dry climates know how easy it is to become dehydrated and we need to sip water all day long. I, for one, could not image having to drink tepid H2O...blah!

Chelly, inmates can purchase bottled water (limit 6, .40 cents), ice (limit 4, .85 cents) and an ice chest without handles (limit 1, $1.80).

Arizona State Prison Commissary List Note: This is for Level 4 inmates, so I don't know if #28119 can purchase these or not. I did read a few days ago (don't recall where:blushing:) that #281129 did have to purchase ice cubes!

  • #572
Chelly, I just read a couple of days ago that #281129 had to buy ice cubes. I don't recall where I read that, so not sure if this is true. But, then again, inmates buy the heater coil (can't recall proper name) to heat their coffee, so maybe they do indeed have to purchase ice cubes!!!
Thank you Jasper52. Seems there are a lot of comforts available for the inmates to buy, doesn't it? I'm so mean I was hoping 281129 would never again experience ice in her drinks. I guess she can use that ice to make herself ice-packs to help cool down. Drat!

Lol, Chelly, please reread my post as just edited it! Sorry about that!!!

As per the limits and price of ice, here's hoping #281129 just has to dunk her head under her tap to cool off!

"His whole family was really religious," Smith said. "His family, they all wore the drapes and stuff, all the women in his family wore the little hoods."
Andulazeez became an mixed martial artist after high school, Smith said. Smith did not know what motivated his former friend to attack the military installations in Chattanooga.
"You've got to make good decisions, and he didn't make a good decision," Smith said.

I just will never get it. The men do anything they want, while the women are treated more or less like their slaves, and required to wear coverings and drapes over their heads. What are they doing over here? Why do they want to be here, hmmmm ? And the biggest question, why are we allowing them to be here, as though they can be trusted. They can never be trusted, they will always be a danger and threat to Americans because they hate us. The bolded in the quote above, how ridiculous, a "decision"? Really! :what: I am sick to death of people trying to gloss over this... they have nothing but evil in their hearts, souls, and minds. They are Terrorists and should be treated as such. I'd better stop now... :censored:

Hey all!

coffeejunkie - my Huz too just got a prescription for Spirva - he LOVES it!! He couldn't believe he could breathe so good!! :happydance:

re Seaweed - I heard on the news the other day that they (whoever "they" is) found/discovered seaweed that tastes like bacon off the coast of Oregon or was it Washington (?) !! I'll pass...

Chelly - me too! I drink ice water (with ice cubes) all day long!!!

Well - the Huz FINALLY got an appointment with the local clinic for his back pain!! :gaah: it has taken so long for them to squeeze him in. I don't think he's going to see his "regular" doctor, but he really doesn't care. Our roommate gave him some pills last night that REALLY helped his back pain. It was Tramadol (50mg) and Brelotin (10mg x 2). He's going to try and get a referral to see an orthopedic back specialist! Everyone probably knows about "referrals", right? another :gaah: So hoping they get the ball rolling, as he hasn't been able to cook for the last 5 days... fast food for me... another :gaah:

My parents would have been married 72 years today!! Happy Anniversary to my Mamma and Tete. :confetti:
Here's a picture they took at their 50th anniversary in Riga, Latvia where they were married. It is the first time in 49 years that my father was back in his homeland!

Have a GREAT Friday everyone! :seeya:
