How's the Guineas doing?

Down to 2 guineas left. We have the 1 original one from two years ago and 1 from the new batch left. All the other new ones got picked off slowly but surely by Coyotes and Owls. The one that made it from the new batch is real dominant too like our older one. And he is a male too...LOL So its been interesting since I have 2 dominant male Guineas.

They actually get along quite well during the day and hang around each other but right before they roost in the trees, they go through a daily brief battle. They chase each other around the house at full speed and take turns which one chases the other one. Finally one of them gets too exhausted to run anymore and will stop and they have a brief pecking battle with their beaks, and then they go to roost and start the next day out fresh. :)

They are a riot. And a lot of fun to have around.

This time, since I can't use peanut butter, I bought a small can of Iam's dog food, the only thing is it's not the low-fat type they wanted me to get for her, but it was the only one Lucky's carried, and the pet food stores were closed Sun. evening. It doesn't seem to be bothering her, she's acting fine and begging again.

Cheese and Peanut Butter doesn't work for me because its too soft and my dog has learned that anything soft he chews through it to see if I am hiding a pill and will spit the pill out and eat the rest. LOL

Ive tried cookie dough and all that type of stuff and dog got too smart with soft stuff. The trick for him is to use something he gobbles down super fast and the only thing that he goes crazy on like that is good solid meat like Chicken or Steak chunks. He has even spit out cooked hamburger because it was too soft and he chewed it and found the pill. LOL

Our area has domestics that are tended out on State Land Trust, I even caught a swarm many years back and put them in a super.
So the issue is:
Bees swarm between 10:00 and 3:00 during the day, domestic and Africanized. They just chill out, take a breather, and regroup. (and dangit if I didn't see a scout by the water faucet yesterday not more than 4 feet from where they entered the hole under the house!) Usually, they'll head out around 2-3:00 for more conducive hive areas.
They seem to have totally chilled out, maybe 3-4 are milling around to go inside, no active "in and out", just going in.......leads me to believe they ARE just resting.
(I collected the fire extinguishers just in case they want to get nasty)
AND.........I have 2 bee suits (crazy, huh).

Depending on what they decide to do, the area is "off limits" for the time being. If they don't go on their way, I'll be calling a local bee keeper. If they want to "charge" me (oh for pete's sake, if they're domestic, they just become part of the bee keeper's hives........win, win, for them + they get $$$$$) I'll just get the fire department to come foam their butts.

Swarms aren't anything new out here, from spring through early fall, you can hear them before you see them, black clouds shooting across the sky. But there's always the few nasty ones that attack people, horses, and dogs.

Horses are far away from them, dogs aren't going outside because it's too "warm" for them, lol! Just don't want to start the lawn mower or anything else that might agitate them.

"I own 2 bee suits." Why am I not surprised to hear that?

Hey all!

Sorry to hear you are having problems with Windows 10 Bernina!! Just on Facebook this morning there were a few people complaining about it too! I too will wait...

Hello Spellbound and everyone. I have a lot of reading to catch up on here to see how everyone has been.

I have been caught up in some of the missing persons threads and saw some of us in some other threads but I have lots of reading to do here.

Did anyone watch that Jodi Arias special the other day. It was pretty good and was a new show recap about the whole case. I liked the way they did it. Nothing new except it was a different perspective and was well done I thought.

Was that the one on Reelz TV? Don't get that channel. Any highlights you want to offer?? :D

I watched most of it (kept dozing off). I thought it was "fair", but there were a couple minor things that seemed not quite accurate. Sorry I can't remember what they were now. Dan Freman was interesting, getting better perspective of what he felt at the time.

and.... tell more! what did he feel?? Curious, as I don't get that channel.

Well, I see Zuri isn't around either... :waiting:
I'm about to sign off for the night - hoping she will be back tomorrow with some news for me!! :)

See you all!! :seeya:

We had a hive of bumblebees take over our doghouse on year. My father was up mowing our yard and got stung by a bee but we didn't think that much about it until I saw bees coming and going that afternoon. Dh spoke with a beekeeper and they told us to use insect bombs late in the eveing - throw it in and close it up for twenty four hours and recheck. We saw a few stragglers that evening wanting in the doghouse and we sprayed them.

So, the next evening dh puts on his padded coverall, his cowboy boots and fur lined motorcycle gloves and duct tapes them to the coveralls, then he put his motorcycle helmet on and goes outside where he had a pump up sprayer all ready to go in case bees any survived. He takes off the plywood and everything is dead, but there are a few of the straggler from the night before that started following my dh around the yard and he was spraying them. There was this one big bumblebee that dh swore was like a B 52 Flying Fortress, that had poison dripping off his wings and kept flying toward dh as he's backing up, and dh finally picked up a badmitton paddle and smacked him to the ground. It was hilarious. I wish they had camcorders and YouTube back then.

Oh did I tell you it was August in Texas?

I was giving a neighbor a ride after he dropped his car off to get a tuneup, and on the way back home we passed a local rundown motel and lE was bringing out a body bag and he told me that he had three bodybags. They were a good deal on ebay. One neighbor calls him the uni bomber.

Thanks so much for this info! We have noticed an infestation of carpenter bees (on our WOODEN house), but they mostly do their damage in April and May. I called the exterminator a few months ago, and they said the best time to do treatment is during those months when they're most active.

Do you think bombs will help destroy their nests now, even though they're somewhat inactive? I would like to think I could kill them en masse while they're in somewhat of a passive state, BEFORE they have a chance to come back next spring. They are obviously nesting somewhere in the framework of the house -- YIKES!

Any thoughts? TIA!

Niner.... if you are able to watch You Tube, I found the Reelz channel's "Murder Made Me Famous" (Jodi Arias) :
Mr. Zervokos, the jury foreman is also in it. I think this is just a preview.

Bees ..... we're making a nest under our back step, going under the house. I sprinkled Sevin powder along the base (where the dogs could not get!) and pushed it under the house. It seemed to get rid of them.

ETA: I have NEVER been able to post a video, but this time when I put a link the video came up..... it was not supposed to. go figure  http:// youtu.be/OR7QDS_WkJY

Hey all!

Yeah, it was the Jodi Arias special on the Reelz channel. Spellbound is correct that there was not much new except what I thought was fairly well done was how they reenacted Jodi and what she did.

It helped remind me how horrific she was and what an evil person she is. They showed the shower scene and the stabbing scenes and described it all over again what she did and how she dragged him back to the shower.

They even had actual crime scene photos which surprised me. It helped me remember why I hate Jodi so much.

They had the 1 original juror foreman also and interviewed him and he was making excuses again for why the jury (mainly him) could not give the DP sentence. He tried to make himself sound less sympathetic to Jodi and it didn't fool me but probably fooled others new to the case who didn't know the whole story with him. He even admitted that he thinks Travis was responsible for being emotionally abusive. He is still not realizing that Jodi faked and twisted a lot of the evidence. That part got me mad at him and wished they had not had him on.

They did have Freeman on which was good and interviewed him. Below is a link to REELZ facebook and you can see other comments from others about the show.

They are going to do a show on Scott Peterson and I would like to see that one. Its a brand new series they are running on major cases.

Congrats on mastering the video posting!

Seeing Zervakos again really rankled me. What a solid gold jerk. Remember how he was pondering writing a book shortly after the verdict? Public outcry shot that idea down. I hate that he still got an extra 15 minutes of fame via this show.

ETA:

There were a lot of factual errors and a definite bent towards sympathy for JA. WTH??? I was hoping they'd go harder on her since the trial(s) proved she's not just an unrepentant murderer, but also pure evil. JMO.

Bernina ~ I had Windows 10 for not even 2 days and did a Recovery and went back to 7. Not a fan of 10 at all!

Here's the steps for going back:
Settings
Update and Security
Recovery

Didn't take long at all for Windows 7 be restored back. Everything was like I left it before I installed 10.
Good luck with Windows 10. Many people are having issues with 10...

OMG, you guys make me so glad to be a Mac user. So user friendly! :)

GigiG I'd be careful doing what we did only because it was enclosed and contianed and there were no flames or anything to catch on fire or explode. I'm not sure about on the house. At our cabin in east Texas people hang some mothballs inside of an old nylon or thin sock close to the bee nest. I think there is a viginar and water spray you can make to spray at night when they're asleep?

Thanks so much, Pages. A neighbor surprised me by saying that they REALLY like cedar shingles/shakes, which is what my house is.

I had always considered cedar to be a natural insect repellant, thus, cedar closets, etc. Weird!

He recommended using wasp spray on the holes. It's a little labor-intensive, but hey, it's better than spending almost $400/yr for an exterminator.

But I'm still perplexed about getting to where they've set up living quarters within the framework of the house, which really scares me. I guess that's where I was hoping that a fogger would be a good fix...

It's almost funny that I've had termite service for dozens of years, and here I am looking at potentially more damage from these damn bees.

ETA

I will try the mothball thing. Can't hurt, right!? Thanks!

BBM

I know this is highly inappropriate given the subject matter, but that last bit made me laugh -- I think it would make a great scene in a movie!

But seriously, just the fact that you can and do that kind of thing makes me think he must be a super sweet guy -- if I were you, I'd keep him! :)

Thank you for seeing my humor :)
My DH is a good guy. He is given lots of credit for things he does that he doesn't know he does, most of the time....

Knowing her she'll be like one of those women who say" look honey how much I saved" vs how much she spent. ;). Just tell him how many frequent flyer miles you got out of it!
LOL! How did you know? Oh yeah, we are related! Xoxo
