Cream of Coconut Poke Cake!! heart emoticon
1 (18 ounce) boxes coconut cake mix
1/3 cup oil
3 eggs
1 (14 ounce) cans cream of coconut, Coco Lopez
1 (8 ounce) containers Cool Whip
2 cups shredded coconut
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 (or as Directed on Cake Mix).
Mix together Cake Mix, Eggs and Oil (as per cake mix instructions).
Once you have the cake mixed, stir in 1/2 - 1 cup of coconut.
Pour batter into a 9 x 13 baking pan.
Bake Cake according to instructions on box, or until it passes the toothpick test.
Remove cake from oven, and give it just a few minutes to cool a little.
While cake is still warm, poke holes in it. I use a serving fork to make big enough holes, so all the yummy cream of coconut can really get into the cake.
Shake the Cream of Coconut very well to make sure the juice and the coconut are mixed well, you may even have to stir a little bit with a spoon after you open the can.
Pour Cream of Coconut all over the warm cake, make sure to get around the edges too.
Allow cake to cool and soak up all of the juice, I usually let mine sit overnight.
Ice with Cool Whip and then put remaining coconut on top.
If you want you can tint the coconut on top with food coloring for any holiday.

When we went to the ER at two he had already taken two 7.5 Vicodin, and they hadn't made a dent on his pain. He did lay on the bathroom floor for an hour before he wanted to go to the ER, and took a bucket with him for the ride. He had three shots of Dilaudid by six and they told him he was at the limit that they could give in the ER, but he was going to be admitted and moved to a room where he got a shot of morphine, and another one at noon, and after that he was fine, but the stone has decided to stick around for a few more days before they redo the laser blaster thingy. Last time it was done in day surgery. He was in and out before my second coat of "An Old Flame" nail polish dried.

How's the vacation.

And where do you think we should go on first on our trip? The Autumn leaves should be beautiful about this time. We don't get the beauty of the colors like up north does. Are they as intense in Michigan as they are in the northeast? Do you remember the Dan Dipert bus tours? They always advertised the fall colors in New England down here and they looked nice, but boring. They need a small group of very caring people that have known each other for years even though never meeting before, enjoying the sights and the sorrow and joys in our lives.

And kleenex. Lots of kleenex.

Brown County Indiana is known for the beautiful Fall foliage and the many covered bridges that area has. The have a Coverage Bridge Festival each fall and the area is teaming with many street vendors, crafts, food, antiques, hand made quilts, many unique items. Something for everyone.

It's a beautiful area and just little over 2 hr drive from my area.

Nice! I love old bridges, and covered bridges would be my kind of trip. Not that far from me (@ 4 hours 30 minutes)

I worry about getting stones ever since my dog had to have them surgerically removed about 4 years ago. He went through a lot of pain and we noticed blood in his urine. When we got the stones out they were sharp jagged edge hard stones so now we know why they hurt and why they caused blood.

I do have a question if anyone knows. I worry about taking calcium supplements because I worry I may end up getting stones. Is this a valid fear to have?

I would like to take more calcium for my bones but I worry about getting stones so I don't take calcium supplements. Wondering if there is any basis to my fear. Like could taking calcium supplements cause more of a risk of developing stones?

Preparing to have tomatoes thrown my way, but I feel very strongly about this subject.

How ironic is it that John Hinckley, Reagan's would-be assassin, has been housed in St. Elizabeth Hospital (the first Federally operated psychiatric hospital in the country), for the past 30+ years? (Although he has recently been deemed to no longer be a threat, and as such, gets frequent passes to stay with his mother in Virginia.)

Reagan's policies and actions put hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people out on the streets to fend for themselves, and left the general public to deal with them as they may.

Bernina, you pinpoint exactly when the problem started, as well as the genesis of the problem. That chapter in our history is an embarrassment and an abomination, the consequences of which we are still grappling with; in fact, more and more each day. He didn't just fail to provide a safety net for the mentally ill, he further stigmatized them by effectively turning them into street bums, members of the lowest rank of society.

What kind of country turns its back on the "least of its brethren," and fallaciously suggests that wealth will "trickle down," to those in need? What trickled down was a further division in the class structure, wherein those on the margins have become ever more marginalized.

I wonder where we'd be now if, like more socially advanced countries, we had embraced a more compassionate and proactive approach to mental illness? I bet the stigma would be far less, and that we'd have a much better system in place through which people could receive intervention and treatment. (I would include substance abusers and alcoholics, as I'm convinced folks in those groups are basically people with greater-or-lesser degrees of mental illness issues; but who, for their own misguided reasons, think self-medicating is the answer.)

JMO

ETA: How much of this random violence we now experience could be avoided if we didn't collectively think of people with mental illness as "crazy?"

An interesting article on that topic.

http://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/30/science/how-release-of-mental-patients-began.html

A detailed picture has emerged from a series of interviews and a review of public records, research reports and institutional recommendations. The picture is one of cost-conscious policy makers, who were quick to buy optimistic projections that were, in some instances, buttressed by misinformation and by a willingness to suspend skepticism.
Many of the psychiatrists involved as practitioners and policy makers in the 1950's and 1960's said in the interviews that heavy responsibility lay on a sometimes neglected aspect of the problem: the overreliance on drugs to do the work of society.
The records show that the politicians were dogged by the image and financial problems posed by the state hospitals and that the scientific and medical establishment sold Congress and the state legislatures a quick fix for a complicated problem that was bought sight unseen.

Dr. Robert H. Felix, who was then director of the National Institute of Mental Health and a major figure in the shift to community centers, says now on reflection: ''Many of those patients who left the state hospitals never should have done so. We psychiatrists saw too much of the old snake pit, saw too many people who shouldn't have been there and we overreacted. The result is not what we intended, and perhaps we didn't ask the questions that should have been asked when developing a new concept, but psychiatrists are human, too, and we tried our damnedest.''

Just catching up here! Happy Birthday Niner! I hope your husband is feeling better soon. Please have him take his kids with a piece of bread or something to coat his stomach before taking his meds. Glad he got the doxy and I hope that prevents any Lymes from even appearing. I also hope his doctors look at his stomach issues as he seems to be intolerant of a lot of the ones that cause GI upset. Carafate isn't an old but goody and might help.

The bus trip sounds heavenly. Love the luxury bus of course. I took the personality quiz and I got "The Entertainer" lol.

CJ, I have been using your cleaning tips daily. I am overwhelmed at the dirt, clutter and neglect that I have allowed to occur over the last 6 years. No more. As I am a handicapped cleaning crew of one, it is taking me forever, but I am seeing progress daily. I had a "Come to Jesus" talk with my daughter as I need help. It is too much yet for a cleaning crew to come in, but I am getting there.

I swear this torn arm ligament is worse than back pain, but after reading about poor Pages husband with kidney stones, I have nothing to complain about.

I went to Beach Haven on Long Beach Island Sunday to Monday with my DH and visited with his childhood friend from California. That town does not seem to have changed since the 60's. Very low key, very homey, nice people, not crowded. The hotels are all pretty old, but clean and nice. It reminds me of places I stayed when I was a child when traveling with my family. Most of the repairs seem to have been done as a result from Hurricane Sandy. They have built up the dunes big time. According to some of the retailers, older shops just closed up as they lost everything.

I was on a mission to find a brass sailboat sculpture for my husband's "cave" (the living room) and found a junk shop that was run by an alcoholic and it was in such disarray. I found the sculpture and a nautical pillow made from spinnaker cloth that was my husband's initial. I had to ask the prices as nothing was marked and he told me $70 for both. I handed him my Visa and he said he couldn't get to his machine and asked if I had cash. I had $31 so he said "deal". I had a good laugh about that one.

I have 10 paint samples on my kitchen wall, trying to decide the best color. It is amazing how paint changes in light and intensifies on walls! I found some backsplash tile from "The Winchester Tile Company" from England that are handmade artisanal tiles and will use those on the bottom and some great artisanal tiles from Home Depot that are made in China for the running brick pattern subway tile. China and England. Who would have thought? Lol

Hope all of you have had a good start to Septemebr. I am glad August is over. We need rain badly here in Delaware and I had to actually water the front beds. When the landscapers come to mow, there is a dirt storm.

Kenzie, I hope your foot feels better soon and Daisy, my fun flower, hope your arm continues to heal. I have a lot of empathy for you as that pain sure is annoying. Hope you all have a great day. I am getting blonded shortly thankfully as I have I-95 running down my part of my head. Maybe after, I will just have exits...

I would like to take more calcium for my bones but I worry about getting stones so I don't take calcium supplements. Wondering if there is any basis to my fear. Like could taking calcium supplements cause more of a risk of developing stones?

I was told by my urologist that calcium in food doesn't have an effect on the risk of kidney stones, but not to take calcium supplements, as these have been linked to increased risk of kidney stones. Studies have linked taking calcium supplements to kidney stones, but this is confusing as some studies show that supplements do not??? He also told me to limit drinking milk to 1 glass of milk a day (but that may be because of the kind of stones my body forms). Diets low in calcium can increase kidney stone formation in some people and always, always drink lots of water. He also told me not to eat: nuts, chocolate, ice tea, asparagus, and some other things that I can't remember now. :sheesh:

Is it okay to take calcium supplements?

"...Calcium itself isn't a problem as far as kidney stones are concerned. In fact, studies have shown that the more calcium-containing foods you eat, the lower your risk of kidney stones. This was confirmed during a 12-year study involving 91,731 nurses between the ages of 34 and 59, none of whom had had kidney stones at the outset. During the 12 years of the study, 864 of the nurses developed kidney stones for the first time (that averages out to about one of every 1,000 participating). The researchers found that the higher the intake of dietary calcium, the less chances the nurses had of developing stones. However, among the nurses who calcium intake was high and who also took calcium supplements, the risk of developing kidney stones was 20 percent greater than normal..."

There are various kinds of stones, so the kind of stones your body forms is very important to what you can eat/take to prevent stones.

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. "One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me," said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me ...."

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.

"Come here quick," said the boy, "you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!"

The man said, "Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk." When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery.

Standing by the fence they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me."

The old man whispered, "Boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord...?" Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.

At last they heard, "One for you, one for me. That's all. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done...."

They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

This is not his first time. He had one about two years ago and they blasted it with a laser and he had a stent in place almost two weeks. He's been drinking lemon juice everyday to help the calcium to not stick to together and form them. This one is not as big as the last, but it's still with him and he's seeing a specialist on Friday because his urologist is booked.

Yeah, his 2nd surgery was because when they blasted it, they didn't get all the dust, and not sure he got the stent the first time, so there was still "stuff" there. He got them because he basically stopped drinking water because of prostate problems, and not wanting to have to get up and pee so often during the night...

They always advertised the fall colors in New England down here and they looked nice, but boring. They need a small group of very caring people that have known each other for years even though never meeting before, enjoying the sights and the sorrow and joys in our lives.

And kleenex. Lots of kleenex.

They gave mine a shot of Torridol? pre-surgery in the hospital for pain, and it was so effective, he was ready to get up and leave like nothing ever happened!

Xoxo
BBM. Yup! We went through tons of money on samples before deciding on Behr Jade Mountain Green for the walls (kinda minty) with Billiard Green for the Baseboard and accents for maximum contrast. Still not done though!!! DH does good work, but is a perfectionist. ARRRGH!
