GigiG, you haven't given us a sightseeing trip around DC. I was there in 2005 and 2006 and we stayed at a hotel out in Alexandria, but I can't remember the name. I know we took a hotel shuttle to and from the airport and to Pentagon City? Mall to catch the Metro to go to DC. We went to the Natural Gallery of Art Museum? and across the street to a pub/restaurant that had bottles of senators and congress members. Or was that a different museum? I remember it had the Toulouse-Lautrec's exhibit in our 2005 trip. The visit to the Holocaust Museum was heart wrenching.

And we took the White House tour in 2006 right after it was reopened, and missed seeing the Spy Museum by one day. So GigiG show and tell us about your city and our nations capital. And please explain to us the way and reason why some taxi's can't go to certain places.

Well, to address the taxi question first, that problem has been solved. Taxis in DC now use meters, just like NYC. That really simplified things.

DC has four quadrants, with SE being the least desirable -- more crime there. Most of what people think of as DC is actually just NW, along with small areas of NE, SE and SW around Capitol Hill, which are all quite safe.

NE is largely residential, mostly middle-class black neighborhoods, and SW is a very small sector along the waterfront.

Were you to visit, I would strongly discourage staying at hotels in Virginia. Although the way you did it, with a hotel shuttle from Pentagon City, etc. was probably a pretty good way to go.

But for other folks, although on a map I know it must look appealing -- sure, just quick drive up 95 and you're in DC. -- Not so. Especially if you choose to drive. I personally hate metro, so I'm the last person to ask about getting around town that way! It's so expensive and overcrowded, bah!

To get to DC from Virginia, you will need to cross a bridge and there are only so many. Thus the traffic problems. A safer bet -- probably just as affordable? -- would be to stay in Silver Spring, MD, which is safe, cosmopolitan and right at the DC line. There's a metro stop there, too, in case you don't want to drive.

To tell the truth, I have worked in downtown DC around the White House for umpteen years now, but have never taken the tour. It's also been many years since I've set foot in any of the Smithsonian museums, but I would recommend them since they are FREE!

If I could just impart one thing about downtown DC it would be that it's an immaculate, pristine city (your federal dollars at work!). Far from the sleepy, unsophisticated, quasi-southern city it was in the '60s when civil unrest and riots did so much damage, it is now a mecca for smart, educated young people from all over. Their influence can be seen in everything from the sky-rocketing housing costs, to the hyper-cool (and expensive) restaurants, bars and clubs. I'm talking about people in their mid-twenties making $65,000+, straight out of school.

It's a different reality from that in which I grew up, but I do like the fact that it now truly lives up to being what a capital city should be. I think our country deserves that.

Also, if visiting, I would recommend checking out Old town Alexandria, VA, which is quite picturesque. I believe it was supposed to have been a part of DC at some point. I'm not that clear on the hows and whys, but the reason DC isn't a true diamond shape as L'Enfant designed it (it now stops at the Potomac) is that Virginia reneged on the deal to cede its share of the land. Due to that, to this day, the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia belongs to Maryland.

Not too far away from DC is Maryland's state capital of Annapolis, also home to the USNA. It's a beautiful little city, which also offers a sense of Chesapeake Bay life, its beautiful scenery (rolling hills that meet up with The Bay), and GREAT local food.

Baltimore is also just up the road, and I am a big fan of Charm City. It's not on par with DC in terms of safety and it is far less neat and tidy, but I just love the people there. Whereas DC is mostly inhabited by people who've transitioned here from somewhere else, Baltimore has so many rich traditions, going back generations. Also, again, GREAT food, and a lot more affordable than DC.

ETA:

DC might be a nice place to visit, but it gets old living here with all the traffic and the high cost of living. What good is it to be around great stuff if it's too difficult or too expensive to avail oneself of what the area has to offer?

Ok found the thumb drive that had the pics of the remodel of the inside cabin in 2012 that were sent to us. I make the pics smaller and grouped them into one pic for space.

That looks so nice! I can certainly see why you enjoy going there. :)

Coffee, the "cabin " is beautiful!! How do you all decide on what colors or additions such as furniture, etc? You must all get along very well! sigh ..... envy is evil, right?

LOL we had a designer do it and sent us pics on a few different designs. And yes, we do get along well...just 5 couples and we all bought on the same day (in the same group that the person was pitching the sale) ;) about 16 years ago when the market was hot for time sharing. The easy time share (not all the hoops you go through now days). We hired an agent that does the rentals and takes care of all the upkeep and cleaning, ect. Believe it or not we have made $$$ off it with the rentals...No a big amount, but enough for our share of the upkeeps and such.

Thanks for the tour of your city. My granddaughter has been twice and loved it!

Hi Gigi,,,yes. I am in Ohio. winters were warmer , shorter than now from Ind. Mich. eastward. we never had school cancelled , hard when in high school it was quite hike , no busses either. I am so fed up with Ohio winters. Thank God our city takes careof plowing, 6~7 in.a lot of snow! I cant leave now..:snowflake: :coldout:

Thanks, Nore, for confirming my memories of what winter used to be like! When I was young, I can remember having cousins visiting from Wisconsin. They couldn't believe how excited we were to see snow!!! It was definitely not something we were used to.

You're welcome, CJ, but in re-reading my post, I guess it's kind of obvious I'm not a real advocate of the city as a destination in itself, more about what's around the DC area that I find interesting. That would be because it's so hard to get around and everything is so very expensive.

Still, I should have mentioned that Georgetown is absolutely charming, though not accessible by metro.

For scholars, the Library of Congress would be a must-see, and there are several really great art museums, some free, some not: the Corcoran Gallery, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Phillips Collection, the Renwick Gallery, the American Portrait Gallery, the Freer and Sackler Galleries... there really is a plethora of things to see.

Also, because so many things are federally funded, there is usually a variety of free events and activities going on. Depending on the time of year, it would pay to do a google search to see what's happening.

And, great restaurants of all sorts abound, but bring you credit card, because cheap eats are hard to find.

The one thing I would totally discourage would be to come here for the Cherry Blossoms. Just. Don't. They rarely predict them well, and you'll probably leave disappointed. Better to look at pictures of them online. :)

ETA

I know I've mentioned this before, but if you ever want to visit DC, come in early to mid-AUGUST!!! Can't say it enough. The weather is usually really nice (not too hot or humid), traffic is much, much lighter, as Congress and schools are out -- you can even find street parking pretty easily! I never leave DC in August. It's a vacation to me to get around the city without having to deal with all those peripheral issues..

Absolutely beautiful coffee. Thanks for another stop on our trip. Isn't it wonderful to travel with others's on vacations and travels and life through their eyes?

Hi again, Gigi remember in April at Easter 5~10 yrs. old, wearing a light spring new coat and hat. New shoes, now? we'd freeze our azz off. Winter coats boots are the style now. We've always had snow
and cold but not as much below zero. Coldest I've seen (and felt) is -20...

  • #272
Well, we're on our way and have several stops and have gathered friends along the way. Where to go now? How about the way back machine and Nore tell us what life was like during the depression, and on to War II and what differences it made to our way of life up to the end of the war. Take us back Nore, the sights the sounds before nineteen forty five.

I hear you, Nore. We never used to experience negative temps! My memory could be flawed, but my recollection is that temps rarely got below freezing. That's why we hardly ever got snow!

Also, like you, I'm too old to move. Not due to my age, but due to the fact that this is where my family and friends are. I would like to move someplace warmer, but what would be the point if I were all alone?

I love September and October, and then, the holidays. But after that, I can't wait for March!

Here's hoping that this winter won't be too terrible!

DO YOU KNOW

How to make dip free candles?
Ans: Store the candles in the refregerator overnight before lighting them. Youn candles will burn for a longer time and they will be drip-free too.

How to remove food smell from refrigerator?
Ans:Place a fresh slice of bread (uncovered) in the freedge. It will absorb most of the bad odor.

How to keep away flies?
Ans: Placing two-three tablets of camphor in a hot iron vessel keeps the flies away.

How to increase the supply of vinegar?
Ans: Divide vinegar into two parts and keep separately in different bottles. Add boiled water and leave for a week. You will have twice the quantity original strength vinegar.

How to sharpen scissors?
Ans: Cut a piece of sandpaper into strips. This sharpens the scissors.

How to make your table salt free flowing?
Ans: Add a few rice grains in the salt shaker to prevent it from becoming lumpy in humid climate.

How to keep ants away from sugar?

How to clean copper utensils?
Ans: Sprinkle them with lemon juice, then with salt, and rub with the cut side of a halved lemon.

How to make your room smell good?
Ans: To make a room smell nice, spray a fragrance onto a light bulb. When you turn on the light bulb it will let of the smell with the heat. However the fragrance should be sprayed when the light is not warm or hot.

Flea & Tick Remedy
8 oz apple cider vinegar
4 oz warm water
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
Mix dry ingredients first then slowly add to wet as the vinegar and baking soda will react slightly. Put into spray bottle and spray pets down. Be careful not to get in pets eyes.
Use Borax throughout the house, sprinkle it on the carpets and let sit for a few hours, then vacuum. This should kill all the fleas and ticks in your home and on your pets.

Tree Stump Removal - Get rid of tree stumps by drilling holes in the stump and filling them with 100% Epsom salt. Follow with water, and wait. Live stumps may take as long as a month to decay, and start to decompose all by themselves.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEETH 'SNOW WHITE'
-Put a tiny bit of toothpaste into a small cup,
mix in one teaspoon baking soda plus one
teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, and half a
teaspoon water.
Thoroughly mix then brush your
teeth for two minutes. Remember to
do it once a week until you have
reached the results you want. Once
your teeth are good and white, limit
yourself to using the
whitening treatment once every
month or two

Did you wake up with a sore throat this morning? Feel a cold coming on? Give this a try.
SORE THROAT REMEDY
Mix hot water with 2 tablespoons honey, 2 tablespoons vinegar, a dash of cinnamon (optional) and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix well and drink. You will feel better within an hour. Works every time. Repeat as needed.

I love my Swiffer Wet Jet but those little bottles of cleaner get expensive!!! And the wax stopper makes them impossible to fill with your own cleaner…… until now!
I figured it out… you CAN refill them!!!!!!!!!
1) Boil some water on your stove, about 2 inches should do it.
2) Place bottle in the water, upside down so the cap is in the water for about 20 seconds.
3) Remove bottle from water
4) Using an oven mitt, unscrew the top while it is still hot.
5) Fill the bottle with your favorite cleaner (You can even dilute it slightly to save even more money!!)
6) Screw the top back on while it is still warm so that the wax reseals tightly!
7) Wash ALLLLLL the Floors!!!!!

Natural Shampoo for Dogs - Flea Removal

1 cup liquid dish soap (I used Dawn for sensitive skin)
1 cup white vinegar
1 quart warm water
Directions:

1 Mix the three ingredients in a large bowl and then transfer to a leftover squeeze bottle (like an old shampoo bottle). Give it a little shake to make sure it is mixed.
2 Apply to your doggy just as you would normal shampoo. It is best if you can massage it into the fur and let sit for 5 minutes.
3 Rinse your doggy thoroughly with warm water. Towel dry.

I think Susza has a fine sense of humor to be sticking around here. You were fine, Dmacky. When the bus stops, Susza might make us wait across the river for her, but we will save her seat until she comes across. :giggle:

LOL@ ACROSS the river! I hope she comes over to the friend and family side of the River to get us too Spell...as most of us hate bridges!

I'm glad she does have a good sense of humor, because I am ALWAYS the one who will somehow find humor.
I think from my rotten childhood, humor was always my escape. I even got best personality and wittiest in my senior year of HS. BUT you know what they say about girls or guys with a "good personality" though....UGLY
Do you all remember back when our friends were trying to fix us up with somebody? They'd say "OHH...he's got a good personality"! And we're like, "BUT WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE"??? lol

Zuri Please come to my house ASAP.
I got out all the junk in the kitchen and living room closets and drawers to go through and get rid of CLUTTER. Right after that, my sciatic nerve got all out of whack and now I can't sit down or hardly stand without severe pain! My counters and kitchen and LR floors are covered with JUNK and EMPTY boxes! I can't even bear to look for my kitchen table, I know it's there somewhere. That plan backfired big time. And that happened 3 weeks ago! Every time I walk into my kitchen, where the computer happens to be... I look around and want to go right back to my bedroom and get back in bed on my heating pad!!! :bed:

I am a little tiny bit better this morning, so I'll take that and be grateful!

Oh my poor sweet friend Dmacky!! Want me come down and help you organize? I love making list and organizing :) I can be there in about 2 hrs...

How a Case Moves Through the Court System

"...Court of Appeals Case Processing

When an appeal is filed, the trial court sends the official case records to the Court of Appeals. When the records and the attorneys’ written arguments (briefs) have been received by the court, the case is said to be at issue and is assigned to a three-judge panel for consideration. All cases filed in the Court of Appeals must be accepted for review and decided by the court...

After they have reviewed the record, Court of Appeals judges may hear oral arguments from the attorneys before deciding the case and issuing an opinion. A majority vote (at least two out of three judges in agreement) decides the case.

Court of Appeals judges have three choices when making a decision:

•affirm (agree with) the trial court’s decision;
•reverse the decision (disagree), or
•remand the case (send the case back to the trial court for further action or a new trial)..."
