The Art Forger Who Became a National Hero

"In July of 1945, Han van Meegeren picked up his badger-hair brush and began to paint his last forgery.

Over a decade, the wiry Dutchman had surreptitiously become Europe’s premier conman -- a disgruntled artist-turned-forger who’d sold his works for tens of millions of dollars. Fueled by rejection from the art world, he had duped leading critics, wealthy collectors, and even a high-ranking Nazi official into believing his works were real. What’s more, he had chosen to do so by emulating the works of Jan Vermeer, a technically-immaculate master of the Dutch Golden Age.

But post-World War II, a “Vermeer” painting sold to Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring was traced back to van Meegeren -- a painting of such high quality that experts agreed no one could have possibly fabricated it. Accused of plundering for the Germans, the artist was sentenced to death. In an odd twist, van Meegeren was given one last chance to prove his innocence: If he could produce a brilliant forgery before the eyes of court-appointed witnesses, he'd be spared. What ensued would make the man one of the most popular figures in the Netherlands.

This is the story of Han Van Meegeren, the most dramatic forger of the 20th century..."

Trapped with Ms. Arias:

Chapter 8

My Initial Review of the Evidence Related to the Crime

most evidence was disclosed by State (police reports, videos , crime scene photos, interviews with murderer's family, school records, etc.)

State didn't disclose many text messages/emails

"one of the most gruesome crime scenes I have ever viewed"

"told ..a story of unmitigated rage" "one heck of a fight"

questioned "who did this?" (ninja story at the time), if murderer- done alone?, did she have help?, if alone, how did she do this?

speaks about some scenario of another person helping her, but no real evidence that there was an accomplice- ditched that theory

concluded that if the murderer killed Travis, she did it alone, but had to consider that perhaps ninja story was true, but never made sense to him

as atty had to consider her story at this time "to consider merits of the story of which there truly were none"- see if it can be disproved "by any physical evidence so that I can either confront her with that evidence or be prepared if somebody else were to do the same"

only DNA found was from the murderer and from Travis, but didn't mean that there wasn't 2 ninjas- no other evidence found that could disprove either theory (she alone or 2 ninjas)

Det Flores could not, at this point, conclude that ninja story was false- only confronted her with "no evidence to support ninja story and that it made no sense"

he received many letters/emails on theories from attys, investigators, well-meaning supporters and others (some letters from supporters "that might be best described as conspiratorial...Lots believed....Mormon conspiracy"- might publish the letters one day

details of crime scene:

- TA was shot in face

-bullet traveled downward (means gun was above him)

-Ta was stabbed in chest and throat was slashed

reports stated that there was struggle- fatal blows, stab in chest, slashing of throat, came last

defensive wounds, TA alive at that time and struggling before fatal blows

at some point stood at sink, aspirated blood

went down hallway trying to escape

autopsy revealed numerous stab wounds to his back

crime scene didn't tell more because of water, movement at scene, and scene was altered by cover-up

"What I believe now is different from what I believed before the trial began"

anything he states in this book is what he believed before the trial

again states how much TA suffered

TA's body not found for "about 5 days"- shocking to him- TA had 2 roommates

suspicious that no one could smell decomposing body (police officers noticed the "second they entered the home") roommates did not notice or perhaps rotting food?

police also suspicious, but after interviews, determined that roommates had nothing to do with it

evidence pointed to crime of passion, crime of anger

roomates not home at the time

only person that could be placed at the crime scene was the murderer- in 3 different ways

-she admited it

-DNA

-the nude pics on TA's camera

no evidence that anyone not welcomed in home was there- "..there was no evidence that Ms Arias was unwelcomed in..home"- no forced entry found

text message found on TA's phone "demonstrated that Mr. Alexander wanted Jodi Arias in his house. It also seemed to defy logic that anyone would take nude pictures of an unwanted guest"

evidence collected outside of house- interviews with friends of TA (many called murderer "stalker or a crazy ex-girlfriend who Mr. Alexander didn't want anything to do with")
-----------------------------------

Chapter 9

My Initial Review of the Evidence Related to Ms Arias

needed to understand the murderer- "sense of her tone, her mannerism, and to look for any signs of abnormal behavior"

had lots of interview tapes from Det Flores and female Det- thought they were strange

knew that she lied about being at house- not uncommon lie, sort of expected

mannerisms noted: that the murderer "expected people to believe her lies" (believed that she could fool people, believed she was so smart, or that she convinced

herself that she didn't do it- and/or mind could not accept reality of situation)

on tapes, she seemed very immature to him- "child-like demeanor", acted like a "restless child" when singing, doing handstands, childlike concerns about media image
thought something "was off, she was strange"

reviewed interviews with parents- not flattering image of their daughter

-described her as secretive, obsessed with TA, cold, crazy "because she acted 'so normal' when she returned home from Mesa"

L said "did not seem as if her parents cared about her much at all..it's very sad"

reviewed all statements made about the murderer in police reports and interviews by former attys with her family, friends, and former co-workers (often contradictory- not

consistent with any mental issues)

thought that there was something wrong with client psychologically "What was wrong with her?"

list of contradictions from others' interviewed- she was "nice quiet shy girl..some overly sexual wild woman..portrayed as being clean and professional...lazy" and

other contradictions

had his "hands on a mess"

she was described as "being different" as child ( not playing with other children- preferring to draw/read; mean toward animals, a loner, smoked weed; would not

shower "for several days")

claims that, to him, she was "likely a victim of sexual abuse at some point in her childhood. Could I prove it was actual evidence? No. This simply became my theory based upon my observations of her.. I was pretty sure that this abuse occurred..by family member or someone who was very close to her family. To be clear I'm not talking about the incident you heard about during the trial when Ms. Arias was about 2 years of age and she was touched and/or grinded on by a slightly older male family member". (pg 56-57) not "impactful enough" to cause her strange behavior.

"...young children typically do not touch other children in this manner unless someone taught them to do that or told them such behavior was okay"- had experience in

dealing with sexual deviants.. "It is my theory that whoever victimized this child also victimized Ms. Arias and possibly other members of her family"

but did not have any proof of sexual abuse of the murderer when she was a child

talks about sexual abuse and the people who abuse

"..after being sexually abused, the person became a victim of the entire world and whenever something bad happened to that person it was not their fault, but instead of

the fault of another person or the world at large. This Ms. Arias to a tee
."
(pg. 57)

another thing learned is that victims tend to be "very manipulative people", blends into society- everyone thinks these victims are normal/trustworthy- also fits the

murderer "to a tee"

talks about murderer's sister, Angela - went to rehab as tennager "something was going on with the Arias girls...'where there is smoke there was fire' and there sure was

a lot of smoke signaling"

never found proof for his sexual abuse theory tho'
----------------------

My thoughts:

BBM sure sounds like the murderer Lawrence
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 10

My Initial Thoughts on the Booking Photo

had to be concerned about the photo and the "story" it would tell to world/jury

"oddness" of photo "was overpowering"

never seen one like it- "looked so darn happy"- she "showed joy" and that stood out the most for him

thought she was "thrilled" to take it- idea that the world would see it and she would be "known worldwide for something" even if it was a bad something like murder

showed no shame- posed with pride (shows "severely mentally ill")

hoped the amount of mental illness would show in the pic (with the jury)
---------------------------------------------------------------

I am the newest here (I think), I came over from the main JA thread from the second trail. I felt lost over at on the main thread and it went so fast...finally found the SB and I was welcomed with open arms. Been here since and I just love it here.

And we LOVE :luv: that you are here! Love your graphics and your sharing stories!

My brother had that record. My Mom had divorced my father and hadn't met my step dad yet. I was around 5 and my Mom was struggling to make it with us 4 children. I loved Blue Velvet and my brother played it every night for me. Those were hard but precious times and I always think of that time when I hear Vinton's music.

Roses are Red was one of my Mamma's favorite songs too! When that comes on, I always think of her... :sigh: but a good :sigh:

LinasK glad to hear your friend is feeling better! Blood transfusions do wonders, sort of - it didn't work my Huz.

Hatfield - it happened, as you predicted! Somewhere in California - can't remember where, but it was on the local news - said that a "StarShower" was pointed up in the sky and blinded an airline pilot!! They were asked to take down their "StarShower"... I think I would have just moved it lower, so it didn't point towards the sky!

Oh - if anyone wants to read Nurmi's book, I'm getting a copy from one of the posters on the Discussion thread. I can pass it along after I've read it! Anyone?? :waitasec:

Okay - off to read my other threads; than have to go pick up my calendars I made - they are getting bound or is it binded?? LOL!

Later! :seeya:

I do miss her. Her mother sent her to me to take care of because she was too busy, tired, etc when she was three weeks old. We already had her two year old brother since he was born because she wouldn't acknowledge him unless it was to get her way. My son called me very late on a Sunday night and asked me if I would keep her during the day while he was at work and school, said she'd thrown glass glasses at him when he was holding Brit, and they had broke over his head when they hit the wall. If I didn't then I got then you don't love her. She was a very manipulated and didn't care who she hurt.

So, we now had two children under three when we were so close to the empty nest at forty five. When Brit turned two we went to court and they were given to us, so all we had to do was weekend visitation and holidays. She always came back sick, and would be terrible, throwing fits, one day my best friend , the attorney, was over using my computer when she got home from a visit, and was sitting on my lap laughing as I was tickling her, and she hauled off and slapped me in the face. She told my friend that her mama told her to be mean to me.

She didn't want my grandson on her weekends and once told him (4) that if he was sick he didn't have to come visit her, so every week he'd ask if he had to go that weekend, and if it was her weekend, on Fridays he's get sick at school. Diarrhea, throwing up, and I'd to go get him. If he had to go when her mother was in town when we'd pick them up Sunday evening he'd run, get in the suv and lock the doors. He doesn't talk much about what all she'd done to him, other than say he had to stay in the bedroom all day with his one year old half brother, and would be sent to bed while it was still light when his step father got home from work. Brit and her two year old half sister got to stay out in the living room. I told her attorney that he would not be going to live with his mom when he was twelve, and that I had no problem in letting their psychologist take the stand and tell the judge what they've told her. The new judge thought all children should be with their natural mother, no matter how bad the parents were. Every gift I've given Brit has been tore up or broke when she'd take it with her for a visit. We started sending them in flipflops because their new Nikes or Reeboks wouldn't come back with them. Several times they came back in somebody else's old worn out shoes. We started having dinner with them before she picked them up every other Friday, because she wouldn't feed my grandson until Sunday evening when she brought them home, then he got a corny dog from Sonic

Gosh, I'm rambling on.

http://youtu.be/xNEYfIUDkh8

Ramble on. It is interesting. do you feel your granddaughter has good values now and will do OK as an adult? How is your grandson no Way? Happy and secure, I hope.

Hi, just a note. Kaycee has been on chemo for over a week. She is so tired. Cant eat.

Her brother and sister have been tested for bone marrow. Results not in yet...
Thanks for all the prayers. xox

Chemo is very tough on many. Hopefully she will adjust after a few treatments and they won't be this tough. Prayers continue for successful treatments to get her beyond the worst of this. May I ask how old she is? I have the impression she is relatively young.

My prayers are going out for all the loved ones today and wishing/hoping for a quick recovery for them.

:praying::praying::praying:

Oops - I saw more posts after I posted mine... so...

:praying: to your friend, Nore!!
I was tested for bone marrow match for my sister when she got sick with Non-Hodgkins lymophoma (sp?) - surprisingly I was not a match, nor were my brothers; her twin couldn't give bone marrow, as it was an exact match and might not work. She got a bone marrow transfusion from a German lady!!

Oh I loved this book! Hopefully the Huz can download this for me!! :happydance:

I watched the first season of "Bosch", since I'm reading the books! But the guy who plays Bosch was a disappointment - I didn't really "picture" him that old!

and again :tyou: YESorNO for the links and excerpts from Nurmi's book!

Wow. I think I understand now. Do the doctors anticipate her being on the ventilator long term? Is that the reason for the trach? I am so sorry she is going through this. Prayers and Jingles for you, Carol and her family and friends. I hope she makes a swift recovery. Hugs.
It was one of her nurses we spoke to last night. He seemed to think it was going to be a months long recovery process. Hopefully, once she has the trach she can begin oral feeding trials with the cuff.
I hope in the future my friend will make sure to get flu and pneumonia shots, don't know if she had them, but her daughter has been pretty anti-vax in the past...

WoW. Thanks Niner for telling me about this. I have been waiting for the day to hear about it happening. Its going to get worse I am afraid as the Christmas Holidays approach.

I just hope they don't ban them entirely or make me buy some kind of permit.
At least not until I show off my Xmis laser lights to all the neighbors this year. LOL :)

A wise man once said that there are four keys to ultimate happiness.

1.You must find a woman that likes to cook and clean.

2.You must find a woman that likes to have lots and lots of sex.

3.You must find a woman that has lots and lots of money.

And 4)......

Spoiler:

Sorry, I don't know how to hide the spoiler. :shame:

4. You must make sure that these three women never meet each other!

Hi daisymae, I see you in lurk mode and just wanted to say hi and Happy Thanksgiving if I don't catch ya' before then. :)

1973 - Ringo Starr went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Photograph'. His first of two US chart toppers as a solo artist. Written by Starr and George Harrison, the promotional film shot for the single showed Starr walking around his new house at the time, Tittenhurst Park, which had been previously the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, (and where the 'Imagine' promo film was shot).

I was so heartbroken today watching the hearing on the killer of a precious 7 year old girl. There's a special place the creepy murderer will eventually end but meanwhile may he rot in prison, and I do believe the inmates will give him a hard time.

Rest in peace, Gabbie. Blessings to your family and close friends.

I also send blessings to everyone on the SB that is ill, struggling with personal things and all the unpleasant things sometimes life bestows on us.
