Pages, unless it was court-ordered, I don't know what sort of place demands you stay for a year with no contact. Sounds scary. But what would I know. I hope they find him and he is OK--- he surely needs some positive guidance.

Question, my sisters great nephew on her husbands side has gone missing. He has some mental issues but I don't think anyone cared enough about him to get him help. His mom died when he was thirteen and lived with his grandparents, who again didn't do much for him. His grandmother died five years ago and he continued to live with his grandfather (my brother in law's brother). He worked at a Walmart doing the shopping carts, but got fired because he smelled so bad and wouldn't take baths, anyway some group ? organisational? trade school? took him in. he joined and it was up in Oklahoma and you could not leave the place for a year. No family visits either. So, real place or a cult?

No offense to Oklahoman friends, but the state is known to be home to some very fundamentalist types...

1917, General Edmund Allenby, commander of the British “Egyptian Expeditionary Force,” entered Jerusalem, two days after the Turkish forces occupying the city raised the white flag before Allied forces. Understanding the symbolic sensitivity of Jerusalem to both its residents and religious adherents the world over, Allenby, who was later described by T.E. Lawrence as “morally so great that the comprehension of our littleness came slow to him,” elected to make his entrance through Jaffa Gate on foot. This was in intentional contrast to Kaiser Wilhelm II, who, visiting the Holy Land in 1898, insisted on entering the Old City seated on a white horse.

and outright crazy people. I'm an Okie. No it was something like the peace corps or volunteers of America? But we couldn't understand the not leaving or having visits.

Well that is weird. I doubt that it's the Peace Corps, because they're actually very selective regarding those they choose to bring onboard, even as volunteers. But after just a cursory look, Volunteers of America seems a bit sketchy to me...

1955, Dickie Valentine was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Christmas Alphabet', the first Christmas song to reach the No.1 position. It was the first Christmas No.1 that was actually about Christmas, a trend that would continue off and on over the next several decades.

Definitely not Peace Corps or Vista: those are Federal programs and they're very competitive to get accepted into. They accept high achievers.

Just had a thought: depending how old he is (older than 25 a definite no), he could be in a government-funded civilian conservation corps type program. I believe these come under Americorps. These are groups of young people, typically <25, that live in the woods together and work hard outdoors all day. Typically, this is about trail building, fixing backcountry bridges, picking up trash.... They are fed, but I'm betting this means they share kitchen chores and fix group dinners on camp stoves.

Many of these young people are "lost souls". Many are a "mess." I often see how they develop over a year, and they become confident, enjoy each other, get protective of doing the right thing and abiding by the law, acquire social skills, are very committed to preserving wilderness...They are very pleased with themselves.

These young people get so tired, they pretty much fall into bed at night. They become extremely physically fit (heck, they work with shovels and axes all day). The turnaround is very impressive. I believe these programs last a year.

I don't think they restrict family access (maybe he invented that part because he wanted to be left alone?), but there might be just no time....Plus, some of these groups move around a lot (they live in tents), some are housed in old camps.

They will rarely be in cell phone range. They may not want them to use cell phones at all because for a kid on the edge this might be an invitation to trouble (🤬🤬🤬🤬 sites, drug stuff....).

They do not come to town often. When they do, they come in a group.

They may not like corps members to leave because they can get into trouble again and they would be abandoning their job commitment. The whole team will be needed to complete the scheduled tasks.

This is a serious, well-organized, and disciplined program. It is NOT boot camp. This is not a jail sentence: you have to apply and get selected. You are learning from other members of the team, not just a leader.

These young people get a small stipend. This is pocket money, since they have no real expenses. They spend it on stuff like good headlamps so they can see well at night. (I've seen them make group decisions on which kind one or other member should buy, CUTE!) I believe they are provided with appropriate backwoods clothing and gear, but may have to buy a few supplementary items to make life more comfortable. All the necessaries are provided.

I have often been thankful for the work these young people are doing. I thank them every time I see them. It's too bad the number of kids they can take on is extremely limited.

If your in-law relative is in a modern-day conservation corps program, he is extremely lucky, IMO.

It was here in the SB and Niner posted the passing of katydid.

ATL put me in the mood to bake Xmas cookies for some neighbors, and that's what I did while the Hanukkah candles were burning. Is that too weird?

Fabulous, share your love! did it make YOU feel as good as your neighbors?

What kind of cookies did you make!... You didn't share any cookies with us at the sidebar??? :notgood:

:D

Good morning! Smile and have a great day!

Make the most of what you have. Be a blessing to other people and don't take things for granted. :grouphug: :loveyou:

Quick question...

Does anybody else remember reading that the poster Katydid had passed away??
I'm 100% sure I saw it here in the sidebar...I don't think it was a regular poster ??
YESorNO this is right up your ally, did you read it too, or can you find it for me??? Cause I see that Katydid is still posting and now I am really confused. I hope it's NOT true.
It seems like I read it not too long ago.

Do you mean "Katiedid23 - Verified Juanette"?
Really strange! She IS posting here on WS this evening.

I read the Katydid death post just a few days ago. I only read the Travis threads so it had to be in here.

There is a Katydid and a Katydid23. Katydid has died. Not our Katydid23. Obviously!

It was here in the SB and Niner posted the passing of katydid.

ATL put me in the mood to bake Xmas cookies for some neighbors, and that's what I did while the Hanukkah candles were burning. Is that too weird?

 that would have been me... another

I did see on Facebook that a KatyDid died - don't know the #s behind that name. I believe it was on Websleuths' Facebook page and I brought it over here.

And Yes - I did see a KatyDid post on the other thread - and I'm going.... :waiting: a sec.... Let me go find it - It might be tomorrow that I verify what I saw!

:)

I knew I could count on you guys to help me find out the truth...Glad to SEE YOU posting Katy23 :heartbeat: I am so happy that we did not lose you.

Oh Niner
It's ok sweet lady. PLEASE don't be embarrassed. That certainly was not my intent. I kept seeing our Katydid23 post and I was maybe a little scared?? (you all get my gist) BOO  Plus who knew there were 3 or 4 Katydid's? Certainly not me.

Thanks for all who helped me search :grouphug:

I've been trying to catch up with my SB reading and am just checking back in today to my home base. I have purposely not posted, as I've not been in a good place and you guys must be sick and tired of my petty woes and my Debbie Downer posts. I know I am.
I am saddened to read that there is so much heartache amongst our members.

Niner
I am devastated to know that your "huz" is not doing well. Please know that I am sending you love and prayers from Kentucky...(can't make myself abbreviate my own darn state anymore because of the murderer) Also, I agree that your loyalty lies with your husband. I do very much understand how you feel[/I] that your huz does care for his nephews and they should be kept in loop. However, this was a decision your huz came to on his own. Believe me, IF he is terminal (which we all pray he's not) and you do tell his nephew's, you will have to live with the knowledge that you broke that promise to him and it will haunt you. I know this first hand.

Nore
Oh my sweet Nore. I am happy you are home from the hospital, and pray that you feel much stronger with every day that passes. I hate that you have to get rid of your Molly????? There has to be away to keep her. I can't imagine if you are forced to part with your furbaby :frown:

I have so much more to write, but unfortunately I have to run now. I am "babysitting" my grand furpuppy and she is a handful.
Note to self...Do not get a puppy

Sending love, hope, and healing prayers to ~
Daisymae, Nore, msJosie, and Mr. Nore

I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

Ding-Dong: The Delivery Scam That's Coming to Your Front Door

"Beware of strangers bearing gifts — according to the Better Business Bureau, scammers are putting a new and brazen spin on the skimming scheme this season.

In this scam, targets receive a call from a delivery company saying a package is on the way. Right on cue, a delivery man arrives with a gift basket sans card. (Some make an excuse, saying the card is being delivered separately.) Before the delivery man leaves, he asks the target to pay a nominal “verification fee” in order to receive the basket. Alternately, she’ll need to provide a debit or credit card in order to verify she’s of legal drinking age, as there’s wine in the basket. The delivery man plugs the info into a handheld scanner and — ta-da! — the scam is complete..."

Possessed by a mask
Every human culture has used masks for ritual disinhibition, shaming and play. Is being online the ultimate masquerade?

" It is an acknowledged fact of modern life that the internet brings out the worst in people. Otherwise law-abiding citizens pilfer films and music. Eminent authors create ‘sock puppets’ to anonymously praise their own work and denigrate that of rivals. Teenagers use the internet for bullying; even more disturbingly, grown-ups bully strangers with obsessive zeal, sometimes even driving them from their homes with repeated murder threats. 🤬🤬🤬🤬 thrives, and takes on increasingly bizarre and often disturbing forms....

Above all, we should remember that, behind the masked figures that surround us, there are people as vulnerable, fallible, as real as ourselves."

Kirk Douglas Turns 99 With A Party And A $15 Million Birthday Gift
cake-girl-smiley.gif

"Kirk Douglas celebrated his 99th birthday on Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills with wife Anne and sons Michael, Peter, Joel and daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones as he held court under a huge banner made of red and white roses that spelled out “99 Today”...

Earlier in the day the legendary star reversed the usual protocol and instead of receiving a gift he decided instead to give one, a BIG one.

With his initial donation of $15 million, the Motion Picture & Television Fund in Woodland Hills announced plans to build a two-story $35 million Alzheimer’s facility to be named the Kirk Douglas Care Pavilion, which will be able to take care of upwards of 80 industry members with that disease. It is expected to break ground in late 2016. “It is in keeping with Kirk’s philosophy of giving back to the entertainment community that he is the one giving us the gift on his birthday instead of us lavishing one on him,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, chairman of the MPTF Foundation, who adds that with this most recent commitment Kirk and his wife, Anne Douglas are some of the largest donors in the history of MPTF with over $40 million to date..."

Alzheimer's may exact its revenge on those who hold negative beliefs about older people

"Nxt time you're stuck behind a slow-moving older person and find yourself entertaining negative stereotypes about aging, consider this: A new study finds that people who were inclined to believe that older people were slower, unhappier and less sharp than the rest of us are more likely -- when, decades later, they become older themselves -- to exhibit the brain changes seen in those with Alzheimer's disease.

That should teach you to respect your elders...

Live long enough in the belief that older people are afflicted with physical, cognitive financial and even sexual woes, and the stress of believing you are marching toward the same end will takes its toll...."

Alzheimer’s Accurately Detected By Computerized Language Analysis

"...Researchers have discovered how to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease with more than 82 per cent accuracy by evaluating the interplay between four linguistic factors; and developing automated technology to detect these impairments.

The study, led by Dr. Frank Rudzicz, Scientist, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TR), UHN, is published in the December issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The method and automated application of the assessment is proven to be more accurate than the current initial assessment tool used by health-care professionals. It can also provide an objective diagnostic rating for dementia.

Based on the analysis, it was determined that four collective dimensions of speech are indicative of dementia: semantic impairment, such as using overly simple words; acoustic impairment, such as speaking more slowly; syntactic impairment, such as using less complex grammar; and information impairment, such as not clearly identifying the main aspects of a picture..."

A Man With Alzheimer's and the Dog Who Forecasted His Death

"Peter, my precious little Shih Tzu puppy, was brown and white with enormous brown eyes; his tail never stopped wagging. I was so happy I'd chosen him. Actually, I didn't choose Peter. He chose me. Like the Mona Lisa, his eyes followed me everywhere I went in the pet store.

I left that place and went to another, but there were no puppies as beseeching as Peter, so I returned to the first store. Peter's eyes locked on to me again the instant I entered. So that settled that. He became mine..."
