Proceedings resume.

VZ questioning Tongo about whether he is referred to as Robert by more ppl than just his boss?

Tongo says his boss and manager at the Protea Colosseum hotel know that his name is Zola Robert.

And the fact that they refer to him as Robert, is up to them.

VZ: He (Shrien) did tell you that he wanted to pay you the outstanding money.

Tongo: It seems he did

VZ: Did you indicate that you will have a problem finding transport?

Tongo: If I remember correct, it seems I did.

VZ: So it was unsure that you would get transport?

Tongo: Maybe it could be like that

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 57s57 seconds ago

Why is this relevant? Dewani says Tongo introduced himself as "Robert". Tongo, however, says he hardly uses that name.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 1m1 minute ago

VZ: But if you couldn't get transport and he had to wait at the bridge in 2 hours, what's the point?

Tongo: I tried to get there

Shrien Dewani says he has difficulty hearing what the interpreter for Tongo is saying

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago

VZ says SD has indicated that he can't hear the interpreter. Traverso asks her to cast her voice across the courtroom.

VZ: He will further say that he went to the shopping mall at the Waterfront. Because there was lots of media he hotel arranged for him to use one of their cars. He bought thank you cards, that were in a white plastic bag.

I don't see ANY evidence to incriminate Dewani at all in this. I see a man who was absolutely screwed by a taxi driver who saw $ and decided to arrange a kidnapping, robbery or ransom demand that went terribly wrong. ALL the evidence points to that. So Dewani was bi-sexual. And?! Who cares?! Men having affairs with other men while happily married are hardly unheard of. Does that mean they're likely to arrange a hit on their wife?? It's absurd. There's sobbing manically in a court to feign tramau but being sectioned for months. It's something else. The poor guy is and was absolutley distraught because guess what, his wife was kidnapped and shot dead on his honeymoon.

It's really worrying to see so many posters comment on the 'liar' Dewani or that he's this horrible guy. One poster even commented on his 'moodiness' after waking up with this totally irrelavant German fetish bloke as if said moodiness is a sign of him having the potential to off his wife. Ever thought he was moody because he's just woken up, hanging from drugs and drink, with a German fetish-master prostitute who has charged him and arm and a leg and doesn't exactly feel great about himself.

And to suggest this Tongo is giving bad evidence because his family is under a threat is absurd. There's no evidence for that. How about his evidence is bad because he's made the whole damn thing up to shave years of his sentence. The way some are bending this as far as they can to MAKE Dewani guilty makes me actually second guess my 100% guilt on OP for a split second! Not every suspect that goes to trial is guilty!

Seriously, cut this guy some slack. Not only does he lose his wife and get accused of her murder but his whole dirty laundry is brought out in public.

And btw, I haven't changed my opinion on OP one bit. Just making a point.

VZ: We've been supplied with a photograph, of the accused at the Waterfront, carrying this bag in his left hand, I think this should be common cause. Riley confirms, it's common cause.

RAHIMA ESSOP ‏@rahimaessop 1m1 minute ago

the photograph is handed up as an exhibit.

VZ: There was then telephonic contact between you and the accused. You actually gave him a missed call of one second, And he returned the call. He will say that he wrote a thank you card, put R1000 in it & into an envelope and left his room to meet with you. He did ask you to come into the hotel. There were lots of media outside. What do you say about that?

Tongo: The fact that the accused left his room, is up to him. But what I know is I got through the door. i saw him. He gave me a sign to follow him. I did. He had a bag in his hand. If my memory serves me correct, it was written CNA (stationery shop). we went to the passage.

VZ interrupts.

VZ: The accused will say that he steered clear of the windows because there were media people with cameras.

Traverso: Is this right?

Tongo: I got in the way I explained and he signalled that I should follow him

VZ: Is that (communications room) the place the police used for the interview on Sunday?

Tongo:It was my first time there.

VZ to show CCTV footage of the communications room, showing SD walking in with plastic bag, Tongo follows

Van Zyl repeats that Dewani went to the Waterfront on the Tuesday after the murder to do some shopping and buy thank you cards.

VZ:he will say he went to the Waterfront, hotel arranged a vehicle,he went to stationary shop & and bought 10 handmade cards.

there was telephonic contact, you tried calling, he returned the call, he wrote a thank you card "thanks Shrien"..

Leila Samodien ‏@Leila_Luck 3m3 minutes ago

Shrien's version is that he gave Tongo R1,000 with a thank you card as he "felt sorry" for Tongo - ie, not as money for a hit.

VZ: They stay in for about a minute. The accused leaves, then the witness, who goes into the toilet and leaves

Court seeing another video clip. This one from the Cape Grace hotel on Nov 16 2010. Some of the footage has been seen before.

Tongo and Dewani together in the communications room.

VZ stops the clip on a close up of the plastic bag and asks the court to have a look if there's a shadow of anything?

He leaves it there for a few seconds.

VZ: What happened in that room?

Tongo: We got in there, we didn't get deep into it. We stood at a round table. The accused handed over a plastic bag. Then he walked out.

  • #855
Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 42s42 seconds ago

Tongo: I looked in the plastic. There was an envelope. I went to the toilet to check the money. I saw it wasn't the full amount. I took the money, put it in my back pocket, kept the plastic and walked out.

  • #856
Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 33s34 seconds ago

Tongo: I was upset and angry.

VZ: Why didn't you throw the plastic away if it was empty?

Tongo: That's the same as asking why I didn't put it in my pocket.

VZ: No it's not. I want to know why you didn't throw it away?

Tongo: I don't have a reason.

VZ: If you look at the way you're carrying the bag, it looks like something is in therelLike an envelope or a card.

Tongo: That is not true. That plastic is hard. If you carry it properly, at the top, it might look like something is inside.

VZ: Did you look for the accused?

Tongo: I used the corner of my eye

Tongo, says he did not turn his head in search of Dewani, he used the corners of his eyes, Dewani family shares a giggle.

  • #858
Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 1m1 minute ago

VZ: So you just looked through the corner of your eye and didn't see him.

Tongo: Correct.

VZ:why not look down the passage? Did you & the accused say anything to each other in that communications room?

Tongo: I'm not sure whether I remember correctly, but it seems he said 'Thank You'...in that line. I can't remember responding..

Traverso: Before he said Thank You, did you say anything to him?

Tongo: No, he just gave the plastic to me, said thank you and I don't remember responding.

  • #859
RAHIMA ESSOP ‏@rahimaessop 1m1 minute ago

VZ: how deep were you in this room?

Tongo: not far from the door.

VZ: you just entered, correct?

Tongo: can be.

  • #860
kevinjohnbrandt ‏@kevinjohnbrandt 1m1 minute ago

VZ: why did you remain in that room for 1min 4secs ? If that's the only thing that happened?

VZ: The accused will say that inside the communications room, you were not alone, there was another couple.

VZ: You see it on the video. Do you agree?

Tongo: I don't agree. Where does he say those people were seated? There was no one there.
