I've been looking at hotel salaries. I couldn't find anything for Cape Grace - apart from temp work during the world cup - but looking at this website here, MM could have been earning anything from 4,000 to 15,000 a month, unless he lived in. Whatever it was, 1,000 Rand for arranging a hit seems such a tiny amount of extra money....:(

I found this site that has minimum wage for all sectors currently. The wages are extremely low, and I expect there still a race division with pay, which I learned about from a link someone posted in the OP thread.

The importance of what they called Anni is lost on me. They all seemed to call each other different names, so I can't see what point defence is trying to make, working away at the difference between them calling Anni 'wife' or 'lady'.

VZ now directs MM to look at the record, his evidence from yesterday.

VZ reads" I asked him why are you looking for a hit man..there was a couple, married people, husband wants wife kill", can you please explain this evidence you gave yesterday?

MM: it is as it is contained here, my lady.

VZ: why did you tell the court a moment ago that he didn't mention "wife" all you knew was that it was a "lady" to be killed

VZ: I would like to know what is the truth, Sir?

MM: what I said yesterday is the truth.

VZ:that means what you said a few moments ago isn't the truth. MM its much more sinister than this, did you know Tongo said he didn't know it was his wife, he thought it was a client or business partner or a lady. You can accept from me that it what he told the court.

Monde Mbolombo is under a lot of pressure as his freedom depends on his testimony being truthful

Judge:are all ladies wives in your vocabulary?

MM:a lady is someone who is not married yet.

Judge:did you not know that? but even in Xhosa, the little that i do understand, you refer to lady and wife using two different words.

Interesting

Court adjourns. Dewani whispers something to hiself on way down to cells. Sounded like "this guy". Or maybe "Jesus Christ..."

#DewaniTrial Mbolombo says wife and lady is confusing. Van Zyl says it's much more sinister than that.

I can't help but wonder if there are ''translation issues'' and cultural issues at play here. Right from the beginning starting with conversations between Tongo and SD and now with MM and translator JMHO

Thanks for that. They are low, but even if MM was only earning R3,000 per month, just a third of his monthly salary, for taking a life?? It's so hard for me to get my head around. Glad I can't, really....

FvZ points out to MM that the word "wife" was clearly in his statement.
1134
MM softly responds to FvZ's questions. He looks at the interpreter next to him as he speaks.
FvZ: Did you tell Captain Hendricks that you can't remember ZT using the word "wife"?
1135
MM: It came from me. I can't remember what ZT said.

It would be a travesty if SD were convicted merely on the testimony thus far of his so called conspirators but it would equally be a travesty if a guilty man went free because the SA police and prosecutors took the easy way out and thought they'd get away with it

I totally agree. One reason why I want to see Diwani take the stand. It was when I heard OP give evidence that his guilt was finally nailed, for me. I had thought he was probably guilty after the Bail Hearing (having first thought it could have been an accident). I am finding this case very frustrating. I don't know how anyone remembers exactly what they said 4 years ago. They may not be purposely lying, just remembering differently. I am sure we all do it (not lie - lol) but memory is fickle. Unfortunately this does make it look as though the witnesses are lying and no judge will be able to convict on the current evidence even if Dewani is truly guilty. It would be a travesty if he walks but is guilty.

VZ: the word "wife" was clearly inserted in your statement so you don't contradict Zola Tongo, wish to comment? was this coming from you originally, or was this suggested to you (by Capt Hendrickse)?

MM: It came from me, can't remember so well because happened long ago.

VZ: no it happened now the other day, 26 Sept 2014.

vanessa poonah ‏@vanessapoonah01 #SABCNews 3m3 minutes ago

MM: It came from me..

Van Zyl: but now you are saying what came from you is wrong. He did say wife. Why?

MM: there reason is because it happened a long time ago, 2010, that's why I said wife or lady.

judge: Either Zola told you it was a husband who wanted a wife killed or not.

MM: he did say wife.

Obviously inferences can be drawn by the judge if Dewani does not testify, and this is a risk to a defendant that chooses not to testify....but of course if he doesn't, it will be argued on the fragility of his mental health etc. so the risk might not be deemed so great, as opposed to him possibly 'doing an oscar' on the stand and digging himself a big hole. I am not sure we will see him testify, unless something big is revealed.

I agree Z, it is shocking and hard to understand. Cape Town must be notorious for this because in 2005, Dina Rodrigues paid a taxi rank man and his 4 hit men cohorts R10 000 to kill her boyfriend's child.

Shrien Dewani seen looking around at times as Monde Mbolombo testifies on the witness stand.

VZ: how were you involved apart from making contact with Abongile (Qwabe)

MM: I was involved...I made sure they all meet.

vanessa poonah ‏@vanessapoonah01 #SABCNews 1m1 minute ago

van Zyl: why did you have to be there?

MM: this thing to have someone killed was not a minor thing.. ...These two people didn't know each other.

MM: I did not give the number, I'm the one that phoned.

Just a thought - could Dewani have had Anni somehow put on the 'books' or board of one of his businesses when the wedding took place, making her, indeed, a business associate?
