Panayiotou to hear whether he gets bail
2015-06-05 05:20

Panayiotou faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder‚ kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and defeating the ends of justice.

Port Elizabeth - Murder-accused Christopher Panayiotou is expected to hear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday whether he will be granted bail.

Magistrate Abigail Beeton said she had hoped to hand down judgment on Thursday and had a draft order for his bail application ready.

However, she said she wanted one more day to reconsider, following "clarity" she had received during Thursday's proceedings.

High court to hear Panayioutou bail appeal

The appeal against a Port Elizabeth magistrate’s decision to deny murder accused Christopher Panayiotou bail will be heard by the high court in Grahamstown on July 20.

On June 5, Panayiotou was denied bail by Port Elizabeth magistrate Abigail Beaton who ruled that Panayiotou could be a flight risk and that there was a chance he could interfere with state witnesses.

Upon lodging his appeal, Panayiotou’s legal team launched a scathing attack on Beaton, saying she had erred on a number of fronts when she made the decision to deny their client bail.

Panayiotou and his two co-accused, Luthando Siyoli, and the alleged hitman Sizwe Prince Vumazonke, are all still in custody.

They were arrested shortly after the murder.

PANAYIOTOU CASE MOVED TO GRAHAMSTOWN HIGH COURT

Murder accused Christopher Panayiotou’s bail appeal hearing will be heard in Grahamstown, and not Port Elizabeth.

Panayiotou’s legal team convinced the National Prosecuting Authority to argue the alleged wife killer’s bail application appeal out of town.

The prosecution was against the idea of having the matter moved from Port Elizabeth to the Grahamstown High Court.

The move had been proposed by the defence.

Panayiotou’s legal team has also denied the move was aimed at attracting less media attention.

Defence advocate Mike Hellens will take over from advocate Terry Price in Panayiotou’s second attempt bail.

In court papers, Panayiotou’s lawyers highlighted several so-called errors by Beeton in her refusal to grant bail last month.

They claim her reasons were self-contradictory and biased.

St Albans Prison authorities are investigating how the alleged hitman in the Jayde Panayiotou murder case was able to access Facebook while behind bars.

Sizwezakhe Vumazonke has in the meantime been moved to a single cell.

Warders carried out a search of the communal cell where he was being held this week following allegations he had interacted with friends on social media.

St Albans commissioner Mandla Jam said while prison warders found no cellphone in Vumazonke’s possession, this doesn’t mean he did not have access to one.
