Can you honestly imagine if this happened in every trial where DNA is used? I feel incredibly sorry for this poor woman. DNA evidence alone never sends anyone to prison for life.

Yes, agreed. I can't hear it well enough to follow it, but I can see she's looking stressed. I have nothing but admiration for the way she's keeping it together and arguing her case.

I've found it a bit annoying that they haven't had a camera on Desai when he is speaking today, so it's difficult to catch everything he's saying.

The audio has been poor from day 1. There were 2 videos when the plea explanation was read out. The first video I saw had the microphone on the defence's side of the court and the quality was very similar to what we have here, minus the sound cutting out all the time. The second video had the microphone over near Galloway. The quality was good and you didn't have the echo effect, if I can call it that. I don't know why someone isn't doing something about it.

Otto says samples below the standard cannot be ignored. Input DNA is too low, amplification kits used to deal with very little amounts.

Adv Combrink now asking about the labeling of sampling and according to SOPs

Adv Combrink hands over document from their expert, claims samples taken were not big enough as per SOP

Otto: smaller DNA samples taken, goes against SOP but still yielded great results

Adv Combrink: the witness has been harping on about SOPs but didn't follow it here

The only thing I can think of is that yesterday it was picking up comments that it maybe shouldn't have, like when the assessor whispered in Desai's ear, and Botha complained earier that they were picking up comments between counsels. But I think they've corrected that today, so I don't know.

eta - they've corrected it to the point that we can no longer hear clearly what judge and counsel are saying to the witness.

I'm not expecting Combrink to put any specifics to Otto. I think the whole cross-exam has been designed so that the defence can argue that procedures and standards of the agency are inadequate and unreliable.

I bet they haven't asked to random test any of the samples because they wouldn't want to be in the position of having to agree they are accurate.

Every time Otto tells him to address his criticisms in context of an actual result he can't.
