Otto: she has her own set of SOPs, every analyst has their own

Combrink: you look at the results? And you don't go back to the process to see if it was done correctly

Otto: at our level of expertise, you should be able to follow the process according to SOPs

Otto: confidently stating that nothing has gone wrong in the process

Otto: says defense must give an e.g. of how result can be wrong if SOP was followed

Otto:saying very firmly she wants an e.g of non- conformance to SOP

Adv Combrink: you said if incorrect result due to SOP not being followed, it cannot be accepted

Combrink seems to be getting to his point: Otto did not do the tests herself. Team analysts have done tests.

Otto comes back hard. 'Our analysts are skilled in their field and nothing has gone wrong in any of the processes.'

Otto: SOPs are there to be followed. We will pick up error if SOP is not followed.

Combrink: yes but a human hand must say the SOPs weren't followed. Otto: 'We're going around in circles.'

Combrink says he will leave this aspect for a moment. He will come back to SOPs and corrections at a later stage.

Kits used in SAPS lab are bought from US companies, used in labs all over the world. Judge Desai jokingly asks if it's the same ones used on CSI.

When she gets a full result, she doesn't have any reason to doubt the outcome due to all the SOPs, Otto insists.

Nothing has gone wrong in the 216 samples of the case as they were done in isolation, Otto says.

And to think, we still have to listen to Botha!!!

Otto has the most incredible patience. I would be :pullhair:

"I'm not a ... I'm not a ... I'm not a ..."

OMG, I was waiting for her to say, "And I'm not a gynaecologist".

Combrink asks Otto about room where tests are done & how many people work in main laboratory. O: Very sterile-people work in suits.

Otto restates its not her job to check up analyst's SOPs.'I have someone checking up on me,they have someone checking up on them.'

Combrink apologizes to Judge for tedious line of questioning but 'it needed to be done'. He now enters new documents into court.

Otto is reading through the documents currently. The documents relate to the axe found at the crime scene.

We are running through the documentation of the entire analysis of axe. Running through SOPs and procedures in this instance.

Otto: when writing a report she doesn't need to know about the Forensic process, it's not her job, also to minimize bias

Otto: is standing her ground in the cross examination, very firm and confident, emphasising how she is re-stating facts

Otto now taking Combrink though the paper trail of one sample, as an example.

Hallelujah, a lunch break? I’ve endured days in court listening to commercial trials that have been absolutely riveting compared to this.

You would think one hour would be long enough for lunch. They act like they have all the time in the world...

Thanks for all the updates. I couldn't face listening to another morning of time wasting. I just wish Desai would tell the DT they are going round in circles and to cut to the action. If Otto can see what they are up to, so should he!

Now we can watch Combrink/Botha in 'action', it's even more painful, it is torture! Otto isn't falling for it and neither are the court watchers. Shame on that pair!

Back from lunch. Judge Desai wants to see media in chambers later

Otto: we undergo competency tests once and then proficiency tests once a year, either internal or external

A certificate of Otto's training is handed up, trained in 1997

Otto: I completed my training in 1997 "with flying colours!"

(now Otto's education is being scrutinized?!) Only in SA!!
