DHEC: More than 130 new COVID-19 cases associated with K-12 schools in past 4 days

"The number of cases in each school is cumulative -- meaning it’s the total number of cases since the fall semester began and not just active cases.

As of Tuesday, Oct. 13, DHEC says a total of 1,277 cases have been reported in K-12 schools in South Carolina. Just days before, on Friday, that stood at 1,141.

Of the current total cases, 906 were students and 371 were employees."

DHEC: 810 new COVID-19 cases, 22 more deaths announced in SC

Hospitalization Update
"As of Saturday morning, DHEC says 84.17% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 73.52% of ICU beds are in use.

There are 759 hospitalized patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 or are under investigation for having the virus, DHEC said. Of those, 205 COVID-19 patients are in the ICU.

DHEC is reporting 1,563 ventilators available in the state with 465 of them in use. COVID-19 patients account for 103 of those."

SC health officials release plan to distribute COVID-19 vaccine once available

"Officials say the goal of the plan is to make sure there is “equitable distribution” of the vaccine “based on the most current federal guidance and recommendations.”

When the vaccine is first approved and available, there will be a limited supply, DHEC says. Under the state’s plan, the first people to receive the vaccine will be groups identified to be most at-risk, including front-line medical workers and nursing home residents."

Well this is certainly disturbing news!

AARP: S.C. nursing homes have highest COVID-19 death rate in U.S. | wltx.com

"According to AARP, 5,102 nursing home residents in South Carolina have gotten COVID-19 and 940 of them have died since January. Hutchison told News19 that AARP gets their data from DHEC.

“South Carolina is extremely low on their stock pile of PPE,” said Hutchison. “Every nursing home should have a month’s plus of PPE and we do not.”

AARP’s dashboard says 34% of South Carolina nursing homes don’t even have a week’s supply of PPE."

"The South Carolina State Fair is continuing its tradition in a new way this year by becoming a drive-thru fair for the first time in its history. It’s an effort to spread joy and keep fair-goers safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Guests will experience a snippet of the agriculture, arts, entertainment, and food they look forward to each year while remaining in the safety of their vehicles. The event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m."

SC coroners explain process of removing COVID-19 from incorrect death certificates

"Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says of his county’s 263 COVD-19 deaths, he’s removed the virus from three death certificates. “If I have a death certificate, and someone says it’s COVID, and they weren’t tested, I have changed that,” Watts explained.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says of her county’s 173 COVID-19 deaths, she’s changed five. “We reached out to DHEC and said we have these death certificates, and family is saying they need to be changed,” Fisher noted. “I asked do we have the right to do that, and she said yes, of course.”

Coroner Fisher says she’s found COVID-19 sometimes incorrectly appears on a death certificate because the doctor wasn’t personally involved in writing it. She says they sometimes have a staff member who writes them. She also believes medical certifiers occasionally miss things. “It’s a constant check and balance with us,” said Fisher. “Every death certificate that comes across us, we are responsible for it, and we like to have our numbers accurate.”

SC announces 921 new COVID-19 cases, 40 more deaths Thursday

SC tops 160K COVID-19 cases, 3500 deaths

"As of Thursday morning, DHEC says 83.77% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 76.64% of ICU beds are in use.

There are 766 hospitalized patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 or are under investigation for having the virus, DHEC said. Of those, 185 COVID-19 patients are in the ICU.

DHEC is reporting 1,607 ventilators available in the state with 525 of them in use. COVID-19 patients account for 91 of those."

DHEC, UofSC team up for year-long COVID-19 testing project | WBTW

"A total of 32,500 South Carolinians have been randomly selected to take part in the first wave of testing and will receive a blue envelope in the mail.

Participation entails just two steps: complete a private online survey and take part in one free COVID-19 test – both a nasal swab and blood sample – that will identify both current and past infection.

“This widescale public health project will track current infection rates and provide scientific evidence of immunity among various populations,” Dr. Daguise said. “Each participant’s information will remain confidential. This is an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for South Carolinians to directly support public health experts’ understanding of this new and deadly disease that continues to impact our state and nation.”

Randomly selected participants include those five years of age and older. Parents or guardians will be responsible for minors’ participation."

Columbia leadership considering stricter measures as CPD data shows parties continue

Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins . . . said the lack of social responsibility in the large gatherings is frustrating.

“You are preaching the same message over and over and over and over again and it comes to point where at what point do we quit educating and start taking more evasive actions and it’s probably at that point right now,” he said.

He said he and his team will also be active in speaking with apartment complexes about hiring security to prevent large parties and to educate them on the rules.

SC announces 628 new COVID-19 cases, 14 more deaths Saturday

"As of Saturday morning, DHEC says 81.61% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 77.32% of ICU beds are in use.

There are 743 hospitalized patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 or are under investigation for having the virus, DHEC said. Of those, 200 COVID-19 patients are in the ICU.

DHEC is reporting 1,838 ventilators available in the state with 448 of them in use. COVID-19 patients account for 97 of those."
