The former Senator gave his permission to BW to name him in the book. I would assume he had already told his ex-wife and their children. BW TOLD WHO it was because he is African American - which just wasn't "done" by people in the public eye in the 70's. If she hadn't named him, but just said he was a senator and African American it wouldn't have taken a savvy person long to figure out who it was. Telling the story without naming the man makes it appear that she was ashamed - not of the affair, but the Senator as a person - which might have been misinterpreted as racist.ITA, B.W. did not need to publicly name that man. If she wanted to let everyone know she had an affair with a married man, she should have kept his name a secret to protect the wife at the time and his children from that marriage.
I used to respect her and her career. But she has to be aware how today's information on the superhighway works and how easy it is for anyone who would want to find the ex wife and/or her kids 'just to get a comment' would be. Or, even if not for that just think of the public humiliation it may have caused them.
IMO- she invaded their privacy by naming the Senator.
I'm completely perplexed as to why she would that....
It's her life and frankly, she is getting nearer to the end...why wouldn't she write the TRUTH? She might not be proud of an affair with a married man, but their relationship is relevant in MANY WAYS - some that trump carrying that secret into her grave. Geeze Louise - we get photos and reports of celebrities doing EVERYTHING these days - their private lives are an open book (plastic surgery, sex, affairs, drunk driving, drug rehab and all) - in comparison THIS revelation about BW and her Senator having an affair 30+ years ago is so mild it's almost irrelevant.
