If CCBI checked the soil with phenolphthalein before the heavy rain, perhaps they would have detected blood in the soil....Is that "botched"?
The example was not intended to match the circumstances perfectly, but to demonstrate the resiliance of blood evidence despite significant rainfall. If you look hard enough, you can find a case (even unprotected soil for example) where the circumstances match and blood was found.
On the other hand, as mentioned above, even if they had found some blood it might be insignificant as far as evidencing anything in this case.

ETA: for those who followed the BC trail, it appears the clerk, after 8 extension requests (each a month), will finally produce the BC trial transcripts so the appeal can get underway.
