Student suspended for sexual harassment after hugging teacher

  • #141
Even if he did what he's accused of here, I have a hard time referring to the teacher as a "victim." She's not been physically or psychologically harmed in any way. She as touched, possibly somewhat inappropriately, by a student. That doesn't make her a "victim" imo. It makes her possibly someone who was touched in a way she didn't want or expect. If that's the definition, I've been a victim of subway assaults too many times to mention.

Repeatedly, according to the op, which according to school policy, and IMO in line with general societal expectations, adds up to sexual harrassment. Which does indeed involve a victim.

This story makes me sad. I feel terrible for the boy. I'm sure that the teacher didn't intend for this to happen, either. She probably felt uncomfortable and wanted to ensure that it didn't happen again. As mentioned, she's not responsible for the punishment that is carried out, that's up to the principal and/or school board, or at least that's how it worked at my school.

It just makes me think about how at the end of the year, I always hug my teachers, or if they've helped me accomplish something, I'll hug them or vice versa. My teacher hugged me when I said goodbye for spring break. I realize that everything is circumstantial. But circumstances aside, I believe that it is totally okay to hug your teacher with appreciation and respect as long as that's what you're trying to show---and nothing more.
