Leitch told the court that at some point, police need Millard to make an in-person appearance at the courthouse so he can be fingerprinted.
It was an odd statement.
Normally, fingerprints are done at the time of arrest. Millard has been in custody more than a month. In Hamilton, prints are taken at the John Sopinka Courthouse.
Outside court, Leitch explained that while Millard's prints were taken when he was initially arrested and charged with forcible confinement and theft over $5,000, they were not taken again when the first-degree murder charge was laid a few days later.
The concern is that if the lesser charges were to be dropped — although Leitch says he has no intention of doing that — Millard's fingerprints would no longer be on file.
He wants Millard to appear in person on Aug. 1.
