Police started a search effort in the morning of December 5th. It included helicopters, drones, many volunteers (hundreds of them), dog searches. This one was unfortunately unsuccessful but it lead to a new hint : a sock has been found by some volunteers. Police didn't really look into it and they didn't want to collect it as evidence or send it to a lab. The mother decided so that she would take matter into her own hands and did it by herself. She sent the sock to a lab, and it matched with Mattias's DNA. There was also blood on that sock. It is also stated that even after it was confirmed that it was a match with Mattias DNA, police believed it was of "no importance" and didn't want to expand their searches furher than the initial search zone, even though the sock was found outside of their search perimeter.

(According to this article)

Quoting the mother :

"I cannot forgive that. How they handled it and that they didn't investigate if there were blood marks on the sock. I think it was misconduct, she says and continues:
The group manager referred to the criminal code, but I cannot find anywhere that the sock could not have been sent for analysis. If so, the criminal code should be changed.
(...)
They have said that they are searching in a radius of three kilometers from where Mattias was last seen. The sock is on the outer edge. So I asked if they have moved the starting point - to where the sock was found. But they hadn't."

Here's a pic of the sock that was found. Other pics are some drawings of faces with cross eyes. The mother seems to think it is related since it was found only 50 meters from the sock. Police seems to think that it is a "joke" that was done by kids from the area.

Also from this article :
Mattias, 17, är fortfarande försvunnen – Nu inleder polisen en förundersökning om människorov

"The search for 17-year-old Mattias Borg is in full swing since he disappeared from a party on Saturday night. On Wednesday, the police announced that they had started a preliminary investigation into kidnapping - after receiving a "new information".
In an interview with Nyheter24, Mattia's mother, Erika Borg, says that cries for help were heard in the area where the party took place."

Police concentrated their researches in forests around the area that Mattias went missing. They thought at first that it was an accident and that Mattias had fell in the Lagan river. Different cadaver dogs even alerted, on different occasions, at the same place. They sent in divers but were unable to locate Mattia's body. (from this article)

"A special search dog has once again spotted the scent of a dead person in the River Lagan.

The dog found tracks in the same place as before and police suspect this could be due to the disappearance of 17-year-old Mattias."

Anyway it is also stated in this article that :

"Bloodhound Sonja followed the forest road several times and returned to the villa area. It is therefore possible that Mattias was near this forest road, Erika Borg told Aftonbladet in February.
(...)
In March, Aftonbladet was able to confirm that the non-profit organization Spårhundsgruppen had contributed to the research. Their tracking dog Sonja marked several times that Mattias had headed towards state road 25, the same road where the sock was found.
"The police are looking in the wrong place. It may be in the Law but if so, it is higher. Closer to Highway 25" Gerd Andersson of the tracking dog group said at the time.

Adding some more context to Mattia's disappearance :

- During this party, Mattias had a few drinks but he wasn't drunk, according to his friends and people who met him later.
- During the previous weeks, some robberies had happened in the neigbourhood. Obviously people in the area were talking about it and had warned their neighbours. On the night that Mattias went missing, he was captured by a camera trying to get into a villa. The mother thinks it's possible some people thought he was trying to rob them and something happened to him because of this.
- Between 1:20 and 1:44 Mattias went to knock on the door of a family. When the father opened the door and asked Mattias "What do you want?", Mattias looked at his feet (he was barefoot), and said he wanted some tea. The man sent him away, because he thought he was making him a joke and he had been previously robbed.
-"Six people who observed him stated that he was steady on his feet and that he ran straight. No one has said he smelled of alcohol. A family has said that he "was polite and calm but had sad eyes". Another family has also described him as polite and calm."

How far was this party from his own home? Why couldn't he have gone back there? Could he not remember?
They say he wasn't drunk, but I wonder if he had taken some drugs or his drink spiked with something? It's not normal behaviour.

I can't find an adress for where his family lived at the time of him going missing, and if the family have moved since then, but from available Swedish open sources, he might have had a 15 minute walk home, or a 4 hour walk, depending on where they lived then.

Ljungby is a small town, with 16,000 inhabitants, and much everything there is within walking distance, I checked on a map, and the longest distance to walk through the town takes about 1,5 hours (9 minutes by car, 6,5 km), and that's not what I would consider a very long walk in Sweden (I used to walk from work to home, 5 km).

Either he had some kind of a psychotic episode or he was drugged without his knowledge imo

Yet no-one helped him.
What were the chances of meeting someone nefarious ?
Maybe he ended up dying in a rural area of natural causes and the cold.
