GUILTY Thailand - David Miller, 24, & Hannah Witheridge, 23, Koh Tao, 15 Sep 2014

  • #301
I'm going to reserve judgement on the Scottish friend until DNA results come back on the person/people he ID'ed as the perp(s).
This island sounds like it operates under mafia law, which is a terrifying thought. It's certainly not somewhere I will ever visit. :-O

The man, believed to be tourist Sean McAnna from Lanarkshire, Scotland, claims he saw two Thai men trying to molest 23-year-old Witheridge before Miller intervened to stop the pair's advances hours before they were found murdered.

I thought he was asleep that night

What the Murder of Two British Tourists Tells Us About Thailand’s Dark Side

Charlie Campbell @charliecamp6ell

5:57 AM ET

"The case of Witheridge and Miller has, once again, laid bare the dichotomy between Thailand’s palm-fringed islands and dark underbelly — immortalized in Alex Garland’s 1996 dystopian novel The Beach. Drugs, rape and assault are an unfortunate consequence of Thailand’s reputation for hedonism, and the criminal elements it attracts.

Thailand receives over 20 million tourists each year, drawn by the pearl-white beaches, stunning temples and sumptuous food. The vast majority of them have safe and enjoyable holidays, but a few are not so lucky. A quick scan of English-language news portals for the booming resort of Pattaya — one of the country’s most popular destinations — reveals a shocking litany of muggings, phone snatchings, shootings, stabbings, fatal car crashes, drownings, and more, all involving visitors. Sexual assault and rape, much of it unreported, bedevil Koh Phangan’s world famous full-moon parties"

Police have 'enough evidence' to arrest two suspects and police believe they have uncovered the motive for the murders. He said they expected to arrest and charge someone by the end of the week.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/thailand-beach-murders-police-identify-two-suspects-over-deaths-of-hannah-witheridge-and-david-miller-9751056.html

In the latest in a series of claims from the police investigating the murder of 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge and 24-year-old David Miller, Lt Gen Panya Mamen, a senior southern police commander, said the suspects were related to the village headman on the island of Koh Tao. “There is more than one,” said the police chief.

Police questioned both suspects but had released them. One is still on the island while the other went on to Bangkok.

I can't access the article to read it, so the jist is that he was convicted of downloading a child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 image?

It seems so irresponsible for the UK press to print this! It has nothing to do with what happened on the island nor his departure from it. I suppose it supports the idea he is an abnormal person/troublemaker. It will affect his employability, relationships and friendships. It could ruin his life, I don't think he needed anything else going badly for him right now. If it is true that he did not search for it and deleted it straight away then surely that is something that could happen to anyone (by a virus or something). Scary to think about really.

Seems like it turn out that Sean Mcanna indeed pointed out the killer/killers when he posted the photo of the two thai men whom he claimed would kill him by hanging and make it look like a suicide.

In this news report links you can see that the now arrested man Montriwat Toovichien, a 45-year-old bartender at AC Bar, is identical with the guy in Sean Mcanna's picture.

"Detectives say they have discovered a connection between a 45-year-old and the garden hoe used to brutally bludgeon Miss Witheridge on the idyllic Thai island of Koh Tao in the early hours of September 15.

As well as being the brother of a prominent local, he is also said to work at the AC bar at Sairee Beach -the last place Mr Miller, 24 and Miss Witheridge, 23 were seen alive.

Cops continue to quiz a second man, who is believed to have fled to Bangkok.

According to reports, both men were in the AC bar and involved or watching an argument involving Miss Witheridge, a speech therapy student, before they followed the tourists as they left.

Head of Thai Police in the southern region, Panya Mamen said: "We expect a result within 48 hours as DNA samples have been sent off for testing but we are confident in this latest turn in the investigation."

Well. Kudos to SMc for outing these men (if it does turn out to be correct) despite what he has or hasn't done in the past. If what his sister said is correct I feel for him, though he served 170 hours community service so I suspect there's something in it.

He's clearly a very troubled young man. I will not be surprised to see his name in the news again soon....

I've been lurking this forum for a while and registered today to post this

It's a post from a German Thai forum, which has been translated from German. It was posted at almost exactly the same time Sean posted on FB about them trying to kill him, and from what I can see on the forum, no one was aware that Sean was actually posting, because they didn't mention it until the next day when someone picked it up in the news.

Huhu, a friend of mine for 10 years living on Koh Tao (he is Thai) and works in the Bar Next Door .... whatever. He has just written to me the police have actually arrested in the cave and a Scots is the most addicted to drugs and the music had made the evening. Supposedly then has anyone seen him at night covered in blood and today reminded ... out he was today arrested evening 6pm Thai time ... His name shall be Sean Mc Anna ... He probably wanted was to stay 6 months on Koh Tao also already bought a motor bike and wanted to get rid of after the murders necessarily to get money ... Very mysterious

The next day, when someone posed an article about Sean, they said "yes, that is the guy my friend is talking about, but he sounded like this guy was more involved in the murder"

Now why would someone spread a rumour like this, before Sean as allegedly threatened?

Seems obvious to me.

Do you have the original link to that? Thanks.
I don't think he's the knight in shining armour in this at all. JMO

7th post down in this page and it's in german http://forum.thailand-tip.com/index.php?topic=16670.msg1145333;topicseen

i mentioned this post yesterday, on previous page here. I originally found it as someone on another forum had linked to it and worked out what time it was posted and said it was posted the same night but , crucially, before SM began posting about being in fear of his life. Maybe I'll be able to find that post, we shall see. Any fluent germans here?

I live in Germany but my German isn't perfect. I will ask a friend to translate it properly in the morning. I have seen about Germans talking elsewhere actually. Thanks for the link.

When I checked out these postings you have quoted on the german forum. the friends reply you mention above turns out a little different than you have said. You said:
"The next day, when someone posed an article about Sean, they said "yes, that is the guy my friend is talking about, but he sounded like this guy was more involved in the murder"

When i copied and pasted the exact same reply into google translate it came out like this:
"
Sean Mc ... Anna ... yes that's the guy was talking about my friend . Only he has designed more so that he had something to do with it"

I read that as the replier meaning:"yes(when the sm news story came out) that's the guy my friend mentioned. Only he("he" being my friend huhu on koa tao)designed more(ie fabricated/made up/exaggerated that someone had just "remembered seeing sm covered in blood on the night of the murder)

Just saying. The translation makes quite a difference if for example a resident on koh tao was posting accusations about SM immediately before he was allegedly chased and threatened with being murdered and scapegoated...hmm. The guy could have even been in the bar at the same time as things were getting out of control between sm and the two thai guys on sunday night.

  • #319
Yeh I don't think it works well through the translation.

I read it in a way that if I was to write it I would say...

My friend made it sound like Sean was more involved in the murder.

The murders could be the work of a crazy paranoid person. Turns out, there is now a character involved in the story that sounds a little crazy and paranoid.....
