The Queen and three future Kings

Buckingham Palace has released new photographs of the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince George.

The four royals are pictured preparing Christmas puddings inside the Buckingham Palace as part of a initiative to support the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families.

Buckingham Palace said the four generations of the Royal Family represented a cross-section of all those who may be supported by the Legion, including children of service personnel and to Second World War veterans.

IIRC it was already in the press prior to PM's welcome.
The point is media sources are not totally reliable and would still offer safe security to ppl wanting to stay below the radar . But for a PM to announce it, is still a poor choice. IMO

Trooping the Colour, London
June 1981

What happened?

The Queen was riding the 19-year-old mare Burmese in the annual Trooping the Colour, to celebrate her official birthday.
She had left Buckingham Palace 15 minutes earlier, had ridden down The Mall and was just turning into a crowded Horse Guards Road when 17-year-old Marcus Serjeant pointed a pistol directly at Her Majesty and fired six blank cartridges, before being overpowered by a Guardsman, a police officer and a St John’s Ambulance volunteer.

Burmese was understandably startled by the incident, that happened just before 11am, but The Queen proved her prowess in the saddle by quickly getting her back under control.

I love that - shots heard, the crowd screams, the horses freak out a bit, and the commentator just says in a terribly English accent "hello, some little disturbance on the approach road".

Peggy :D

A shaggy-maned Shetland played a part in The Queen’s equestrian education as one has for so many of us. Peggy was a gift to Elizabeth and her sister Margaret from the King on her fourth birthday. She cannot have been as roguish as some Shetlands, since her owner, as we all know, became utterly hooked...

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II receiving Police Service Horse Burmese from Commissioner Malcolm Lindsay and S/Sgt. Ralph Cave (RCMP)
A black RCMP Police Service Horse mare, was given to Queen Elizabeth II by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and ridden by the Queen for Trooping the Colour for eighteen consecutive years from 1969 to 1986. She was trained and presented by RCMP Staff Sergeant Fred Rasmussen in 1969

Burmese was the first of four horses given to The Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police...

Burmese
Queen Elizabeth not only rode Burmese for recreation — the Queen was reported to ride daily when she was at her country houses, no matter the weather — but also for ceremonial displays as well.

In full parade regalia, the Queen aside her beautiful tall black horse were an inspiring sight.
Her fame became more pronounced when in the 1981 Trooping a young man fired blanks at the pair. Burmese skittered briefly, and was instantly calmed by her rider.

Queen Elizabeth: This photo was taken right after the attempt in 1981
The Queen rode her for 18 consecutive years in her birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, until she was retired in 1986.

Burmese was retired from riding in 1987, after serving the Queen as a riding mount as well as a ceremonial mount for 18 straight appearances at the Trooping of the Color. Strict orders were given that Burmese was not to be ridden by anyone; she was turned out to pasture at Windsor Castle in a location where Queen Elizabeth could see her on her visits.

At the age of 28 in 1990, Burmese passed away and was buried on the grounds of Windsor — an unusual honor.

They are not in Canada on official business, so Trudeau and any other official had no business "welcoming" them to Canada or even commenting. Meghan Markle was an actress. Since when does our country put out statements welcoming actresses? We didn't need to know they were here. Some people just don't know how to keep their names out of the media.

Canada's a Commonwealth country that has the Queen as its monarch. I would think in a way it's quite an honour to have Prince Harry and his wife choosing to spend time in Canada when they're not doing an official tour?

I doubt that the Duchess was being welcomed due to her former career as an actress, but because Harry's part of the Royal Family and she just happens to be his wife?

I would think from the Canadian government's perspective that it's a good advertisement for the country that even Royals holiday/vacation there!

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not familiar with Welsh Christmas customs. It was great to learn about this.

Royal officials break silence over claim Queen will step aside for Charles at 95

A Clarence House spokesman confirmed to the Daily Star that, not only are there no plans to make Charles a regent when the Queen turns 95, but at any age at all.

He said: “There are no plans for a transfer of responsibilities at 95 or any other age.”

Royal experts had also previously told us that the move was unlikely to happen, with Charles pretty much already playing the role of “Shadow King”.

I can't believe this is a real thing at Christmas time :)

I would freak out if someone showed up at my door with a horse head carcass on a stick. This might be fun, but I'll stick with carols being sung on my front porch.

Happy to be ethnically Welsh, but since my people left Glamorgan for Chicester then Massachusetts in the early 1600's, I'll stick with bara brith and hymns and leave this particular Holy Mary be.

IIRC, Romanian has a horse-head-puppet tradition, but Google-fu has failed me in producing a link for you.

Prince Charles says of Prince Philip 'when you get to that age things don't work so well'

The Duke of Edinburgh is being looked after "very well" in hospital, his oldest son the Prince of Wales has said.

During a visit to flood-hit communities in South Yorkshire on Monday, Charles was asked about his father's health by a reporter.

"He's being looked after very well in hospital," Charles replied.

"At the moment that's all we know."

During the visit, a woman in Fishlake asked Charles: "Sir, how is your father?"

He replied: "Alright. When you get to that age things don't work so well." :D

Prince Philip has spent a third night at the King Edward VII's Hospital in central London for treatment relating to a "pre-existing condition".
The duke's planned admission ;) on Friday to the private central London hospital, which has been treating members of the royal family for decades, was described as a "precautionary measure" by Buckingham Palace.

The Queen did not change her schedule as a result of her husband's hospital stay.

:D I can't believe I've never heard of MARI LWYD before.

The Magic Of The Mari...

THE MARI LWYD is one of the strangest and most ancient of a number of customs with which people in Glamorgan
Happy to be ethnically Welsh, but since my people left Glamorgan...:p
and Gwent used to mark the passing of the darkest days of midwinter.
Mari+Lwyd+2014+109.JPG
It's no accident that Christmas, with its emphasis on fire, lights and decorations, is celebrated at this time of year. Before the arrival of Christianity, the Romans used to hold similar festivities at the same time. And before the Romans, these long, cold nights were the time of fire festivals in Wales and across the Celtic World.

From this time on, the days get longer as spring approaches. All these festivals and customs reflect man's awe at nature's annual miracle of death and rebirth. That's why evergreens like the holly and the ivy are such a feature of the season... and why a dead horse mysteriously comes back to life
.

I hate graffiti. Most of it is beyond ugly and defaces everything. I cannot believe how even historical things are defaced .

However, I was struck by the beauty of the writings in the Tower of London scratched in by prisoners. I wonder if at the time it was considered to be horrible.

Here is an article on it.

I have not been to England for about 15 years. When we were at the Tower, it was impossible for us to understand the Beefeater guides so we purchased the headphone option and did a self guided tour instead.

what are the options nowadays? I really recommend a trip to the Tower.

we went to see the giant diamond. I forget the name. We went first thing in the morning and no one else was there.

it is so big it looks fake. I felt if I saw it at TJ Maxx, I would not buy it. Is the one on display the real thing?

I adored England. Buckminster was a letdown but I suppose it is a must see.
