My husband is 1 of 17....he is the 6th oldest, all by the same parents. Crazy huh? Mom started at 15 and had her last at 41...all single births.

With 17 grown kids and 40 something grandkids she still has time to volunteer to help the less fortunate. She won a prestigous award 2 years ago for all her volunteer work called the Hon Kachina. Here she is:

According to my mom, growing up with so many children was awful. All the older ones got to do was work, either in the fields, or the house, or tending to the smaller kids. Her parents were to busy to give them any individual attention and they were treated more like wards than children.

That's the thing that concerns me most about the Duggars. The older kids are raising the younger ones while Mom and Dad keep having more. These kids will never have normal lives with friends and normal social experiences.
The very fact that one girl is solely responsible for lunch EVERY DAY for a family of 19 and another daughter does ALL the laundry by herself is abuse, IMO. What else do they get to do besides those jobs and babysitting younger siblings and being homeschooled? And posing for photographs and documentaries? I think it's really sad.

I think EVERYTHING was harder for our Grandparents when they had kids. Not only did they have more children than most families have now, but there were far less of our modern conveniences. They didn't have microwaves (a GREAT invention), dishwashers or even washers and dryers for laundry. We have it really good!

I agree Leigh. This is ANYTHING but NORMAL or HEALTHY! It is sad and nothing to be bragging about.:( They are freaks and making money off their kids. They even admit that the older ones teach the younger ones their lessons. Too bad these kids don't have a chance at a quality education or a college education. Let's just keep track of this family and see how many (especially the girls) make it to college. I bet the percentage will be WAY lower than the national average of girls in general that attend college.

They'll start their own Duggar College with mom the President. Afterall, she is homeschooling them with only possessing a high school education herself. So what's to stop them from starting their own college?

This is exactly how I feel.

Duggarland is nothing more than a cult, IMO, and it's too bad they are given air time at all. These kids are isolated, they are home-schooled (not that this is a bad thing, but it is the way the D's handle it), and they attend church in the "Church of the Holy Basement." Other than the yearly convention they attend, the kids don't seem to be allowed to have any "outside" friends.

Mom dumps the baby off on a "buddy" at 6 months or so, and then get pregnant again. Here's a chart I found (that someone on the Internet did) showing who gets what "babies" as their buddy. The girls pretty much have 2 babies, where the boys have one or none.

Those kids are completely overloaded with household chores and the responsibility of raising their siblings, while mom and dad continue to have more children at the same rate as a rabbit.

None of the girls will go to college, you can bet on that. In fact, I doubt any of the kids will ever leave the compound. Ma and Pa don't want them out in the real world, and in reality, they probably wouldn't succeed because they haven't been prepared for a life in the world outside of their "jurisdictions." There won't be any part-time jobs at DQ, like their mother had when she was in high school.

They did a show with Oprah, but it isn't going to air. I'd need to hunt for a link, but it appears that Oprah wasn't too happy with the state of affairs of the children, especially the daughters. Oprah was going to make it possible for a couple of the girls to attend a school (midwifes), but the D's wouldn't allow the girls out of their clutches. From what I could tell, the oldest boy does his "law" school work all on the Internet.

I about freaked when they were building the house as I watched the things the kids were doing. Hello???? Most of what they were doing was not safe for a child to be doing. Besides, those kids should be out being KIDS, not slaves. It's fine to have chores, but the D kids are raising each other. And most of the things from the house were "donated" by companies.

While they come off "squeaky" clean, I find the whole thing quite disturbing. And they are "pimping" their kids for cash. I'm really concerned when anyone is this off the deep end on anything...usually there's something else going on. I've read something about SRS and one of the older boys, but I don't know if this is fact or fiction.

I pity those kids.

Here is a part of a blog bashing the Duggars that I thought was a good point.

"But here's the kicker - the conundrum, if you will. Michelle had their first child at age 22. They had been married for FOUR YEARS already. Now, since there's no way in hell someone who's produced more than one child a year from age 22 to 39 was magically infertile from ages 18 - 22, it seems like someone wasn't following God's glorious plan for quite some time. Or they didn't f*** for the first four years of their marriage. Either way, it's a curious little factoid. Almost as if they suddenly made the decision to START embodying the ultimate hick stereotype. But nobody would do that... would they?"

They admit they used birth control pills in the beginning of their marriage. If I recall right, they blame the pill for a miscarriage, asked God for forgiveness and said they would gladly accept as many children as He wanted to give them.

All I know is I'd never drink the Kool-Aid in Duggarville. It's about JimBob controlling it all.
