The Duggar Family: 18 Kids & Counting

LOL...love your story. I think we must live parallel lives! Jonathan started out in engineering also...chemical. He did one year of that before he changed his mind.

Wow...isn't that funny! All three of our kids (and hubby) love all things science and math...and it sounds like your Jonathan is the same! Life around here, with two engineers, an architect and a nurse is never dull. Pretty much everything can be explained by a mathematical equation. There’s very little gray area here.

I remember one year at Thanksgiving they all got into a big discussion about two cans of soup rolling down a hill...and which one would get to the bottom first. One was regular and one was chunky. It was way over my head...lol. So just for fun I said I thought if one was "low calorie" it would get down the hill first. They looked at me like I had two heads. lol

Our oldest had a physics question (when he was in high school). I knew there wasn't a chance on earth I knew the answer, or could help him, but I asked anyway. He had a question about a quasar, and after rubbing my chin for a moment, I said I think a quasar is a brand of television. lol That answer warranted a big sigh and an eye roll. :)

I think medicine is so fascinating and I'm sure your son will come home with some interesting stories. Two of my kids went to autopsies as part of their high school classes...and OMG, the stories I heard.

I wish your son the best. It's a long road, but it's certainly a wonderful profession to be going into. It will be interesting to see where he finally ends up. My daughter always wanted to work in pediatrics, but now she works on the transplant team and just loves it.

I'm just hoping she finds a nice ear/nose/throat doc to marry. I know...that's very selfish of me, but we all have those problems. lol :)

I also feel that they are pushing buttons with each additional pregnancy. Mrs. Duggar is getting older and her chances of having a baby with Down Syndrome or other birth defects is climbing. Also, Mrs. Duggar could develop a problem and die in childbirth. I think they should count their blessings and enjoy the children that they have . . .

If they do have a special needs child, I doubt they'd seek outside help, which is so sad.

which brings me to the other part of this . . . how can they possibly give their children the attention that they need? I know that Mrs. Duggar home schools the kids but that is not mother-child time.

I read that there's a sign up sheet in the kitchen for those kids that want some one-on-one time with Ma or Pa.

I just noticed on the TLC site about the Duggar family one of the girls says she wants to be a beautician when she grows up!

Can you imagine?!! First project: Ma's Mullet!!

Oh my! Sounds like our dinner discussions. I am like you...I just roll with the situation. Love the low calorie soup idea!

I have a question,if anyone is still reading here..does Ark. have tests homeschooled kids are required to pass? Do they have to be kept up to a certain grade level for their age?
I just don't see how they're being properly educated.I have nothing against homeschooling, but with so many children, esp. the little ones who need constant care by their mother (and it appears the older girls do a lot of that, too),I don't see how she can possibly be teaching them all they need to learn.

We had 4 extra kids over the other night for a cookout (which totaled 7 kids) and I practically went crazy keeping them all fed, clean, busy, away from each other and out of trouble! LOL I don't know how they do ANYTHING with all those children. I looked like spazkat's avatar by the time the evening was over. Forget homeschooling. If I had that many kids they'd all be going to boarding school and me to the looney bin.

:D

I just don't see how you can have that many kids, and love them and nurture them equally. There just isn't that much of mom and dad to go around to give each of them special one on one time. I think these parents are being selfish and maybe trying to set some record or something.

You don't get anything for the kids over 17, and I know that a few of them are over the age of 17.

Even if they are listed as dependents on the tax return???

ETA: Never mind, I found it...http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html

"Extra Money for Qualifying Child: Eligible taxpayers who qualify for a payment may receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. To qualify a child must be under age 17."

:waitasec: :silenced:

Still about $3700
