The elusive "other" cell phone - the Blackjack - REVISITED

I think she did have another cell phone, either purchased or stolen. I think also that she was telling the truth about losing it. I think that she lost it in J. Blanchard Park (just as she told Lee in the phone conversation) by it either falling out of her pocket, or pocketbook while she was in the process of disposing of Caylee's body. She after all was probably doing a lot of lifting, tugging etc. and it would be easy to dislodge a phone from a pocket, pocketbook in these circumstances. This is just my opinion.

If that happened, then either she was carrying around (on her person) a phone without a sim card (and maybe a dead battery, too). That seems possible but unlikely. Or it had service, but not on the same number. If that was the case, it would have to be registered to someone, as i don't know of any smartphone carriers that don't require contracts. (I went looking a while back and couldn't find any).

Reading this portion of the transcript makes me think LA knew exactly what she did,. as far as 'work' goes. How would Casey have ditched a phone right under LE nose. If she ditched a phone prior to going to Universal with LE I do not see anything in this call between LA and Casey that would tell LA where that phone would be unless it to reasure LA that there was no way it could be found. JMO

LEE: For work, or for otherwise?

I was in through the park talking to just a couple of mutual friends of….

LEE: So you were up there for fun or whatever?

CASEY: It wasn’t necessarily fun, but yes not through work at that moment…

LEE: I’ve got you, ok, I understand.

I think this convo is weird, too. Why would he say 3 affirmatives "I've got you", "Ok"", I understand" to a statement that is totally ambiguous? It's almost like he is emphasizing that he gets it and to not saying anything else about it and move on to something else (?)

I have been of the mind that the Blackjack was a red herring, and a (conveniently missing) alibi for phone numbers of her invisible friends.

In the beginning, Lee was playing detective by calling her friends and getting evidence (computer and backpack) and all that. Was he trying to help? Or trying to hide (evidence)? That is a big question in my mind.

Tigress, if nobody has mentioned it yet, Amy did have another number in her cell phone list for Casey. Not sure what it was, it wasn't the home number though.

I never heard that until now. Where did you find that? Thanks Muzik.

It's on Amy's list as Casey $ - may have something to do with Casey ripping her off, maybe the bank or something. 407 #, 8212

Liltigress, IIRC, you also spotted a MS/Fb message from Casey to one of her friends earlier in '08 recommending they get a Blackjack since she'd just gotten one? I haven't seen the detail/source info re: Grund giving Casey a phone. Is it possible these are one & the same?

Great post Shadow!!

If I had to guess, my first bet would be that Casey just was always late on her bill. So one day CA says "Who's calling you from 1800-9x7-5096?" KC doesn't want to set mom off on her phone bill and money stuff, so she answers "Oh it's work". She then saves teh number as Universal, so mom doesn't suspect anything (maybe she sent a forged check from mom for payment), and also backing up her work claim.

(800notes site poster said, "I am late with my bill too and they constantly call. As long as you talk to them and tell them you are going to pay by a certain date they stop the calls until that date rolls around.".. so the constant call thing, definitely she'd need to hide that number from mom, imo)

BUT

my second bet would be that she IS involved in identity theft, based on that 800notes.com site you provided. I didn't go back, was someone trying to get SS numbers before June on that number?

It would not surprise me in the least if she was doing that. However, I don't think she is smart enough to figure out how to do it, so I'd say someone else would have to be the mastermind..

Compact RINEX <-- could that software be used to HIDE or FAKE gps locations? I didn't see the source doc for that number, but it seems like that is a really weird number for her to have?

About this unfound Blackjack phone and a phone number that is saved in Casey’s phone list. Phone number 800-9x7-5096 referred to as ‘Universal’ on Casey cell phone dump.
I wasn’t sure where to post this. It doesn’t fit the cell phone ping thread so…..

I Googled this number instead of doing a reverse lookup. This number is listed for AT&T accounting department and as far as I can tell when people call this number back they get a legitimate business. My question is why did Casey have this number listed in her phone as 'Universal'? Why was it not listed as AT&T if she had been calling them about her late cell phone bills?
I am not certain but this looks to me like this number is or was being used in some type of scam. Bill fraud, a way to get credit card info, a way to find out if a user has cell phone minuets that can be snatched by some one. Some type of boilerplate operation is my guess. It also might have something to do with someone working on the inside of AT&T accounting department hooking Casey up with a way to 'purchase' SIM cards.

Complaints from this website on this number

Blackjacks being purchased on someone else account

One more site that seems to me says someone is using this number through spoofing software and that is why although the number may be legit in its self and some calls are from the phone company but others are not and it is being used a scamming business

I am not an IT person. If my understanding of this is incorrect please feel free to let me know why. I am just throwing this out there.
<snip>
This number is one that Casey called on 7/14. [I did not check to see if it was called on previous days.] 772-5x1-1500 lists as a file download access number.
If you google this number you get a website for Compact RINEX format down load which to the best of my ability it is some type of software that compresses or un-compresses data needed to use with GPS tracking and lets you move data from computer to phones. This one is way over my head. So WTH could this be all about?

From Casey to Heather?

i just got a blackjack...it's pretty great. that's what i would recommend.

I only recall LP stating that Rev Grund gave Casey a phone. I don't know if this is the same phone or not. I'm keeping in mind that even if he gave it to her, doesn't mean he had it bound to an account nor that he's paying the bill. Anyone can easily stick an active SIM card in any AT&T compatible phone.

I'm only guestimating that she may have had a prepaid account and used the blackjack with that account.

That is something I don't know. I tried to read through it but way to technical for me. The only thing I was able to find out, via my son, is that he can't tell me becasue what he used when he was in the service was classified. But.... he did say that it just may be a common program that is used by industry to track employees via cell phones. Where my husband works they have GPS on all of the phones for the truck drivers and they can look on a program via a internet link a see where each truck is located. If the dirvers turn the phone off it sends an email alert to his office.
I do agree with you. If she was using some bootleg copy of software for illegal means she did not do anything but install the program or download it. I just can't figure what she would use something like that for. Maybe she just dialed a wrong number. At this point it is a good a guess as any.
Goodness, trying to figure out what in tarnation this girl was doing and where she put Caylee makes your head spin.

Guaranteed, at this point whatever she was doing LE knows about it.

If it was something she was doing by computer, they know. Computer forensics have gone over the computers with a fine tooth comb. If there was software of the sort, they've found it.

It's interesting to me that this whole 'what did Casey do for work' process has been very quiet and nothing mentioned by LE lately.

 • #272
Did Rev. G ever say WHY he gave Casey a phone, or when, or whether it was a black jack?

 • #273
Precisely!

Now, without trying to give too much credit to Casey for thinking through all the angles...if it were a prepaid phone it would generally seem in her best interest that it stay lost forever. But, if she'd been lazy and used JP's... she's bright enough to realize that when JP discovers it missing now that the jig is up his records will be searched and...bingo.
if she used her sims card in his phone, the records would be on HER phone bill, not his. Everything is done by the SIMS card. It's kinda like a removable harddrive with your account on it. If transferred to another phone it continues to work as your account. The phone will not matter.

*snipped*

FWIW...on the Cell/Pings thread a poster advised that one of the numbers that was baffling everyone, and, could best currently be determined to be something like a message service, was very like the message service the poster received when listing an advertisement. Perhaps, this was the message service used to respond to advertisements she placed. IIRC, didn't she post some very, escort-service-esque ads on Cupid or something similar? Also, IIRC, another poster spotted a very brief listing in Craigslist that would've fit the bill. All FWIW.

I think there is good merit in this second cell phone theory. That conversation with LA about Universal and the "mutual" friends....was off, way off. As far as tying it to Amy's roommate, I doubt it. July 15 was the day that the new iphone came out, thus he was "getting the latest and greatest". I think there is a possibility it was a stolen phone, or perhaps a prepaid phone. I doubt she was switching sim cards back and forth, she used that story to justify why she didn't have some peoples phone numbers in her phone.

 • #276
First , my apology if this has been discussed elsewhere. I need some techi kind of help.
Casey said that she changed the sim card from the blackjack phone to her current phone. Would the information stay on the sim card or would it be reformatted for the other phone? Also, it appears that this is not an inexpensive phone, would there be a record of her purchase anywhere in all the receipts? I wondered if any information would be on that phone or is it a non starter.. no info , so who cares where it is?
Why was Lee so interested in where she lost it?
I had the impression that the phone itself would retain no information.

Well, after reading all of the posts on this subject I understand. The phone means nothing. It sure must have been fun (NOT) living in that house. Doublespeak everywhere.

We now have at least one question answered about this blackjack...

On the Rev's latest blog, he's told that the phone Casey got from him was a different phone, not a blackjack. He said she 'borrowed' this phone in November of 2007 and never returned it. He also said it came with a new SIM card and she activated that in her name.

He claims the blackjack doesn't exist but I don't believe that yet. I believe it is out there and will keep my ears and eyes attuned until it surfaces.

Thank you, Rev Grund for answering that question. It has been bugging the life out of me.
