The Last Happy Hour, book by Charles Joseph Hackett

The father that died and wrote the book...his death was in Sept.

I would like to know the month the mother died, we only heard complications after child birth but what was the actual cause? Back then they didn't know about PTSD, or would fathom any thing hinky.

finally what month did he lose his leg.

Why, because we already have Sept. Most deaths were June, July, Aug, and I think Sept right? Those dates have meaning?

A thought occurred to me about the Dr. and the investigation. I hope I get my thoughts out clearly:

We know that there is some disagreements in this investigation between LE and the DA, and I'm sure among the investigators probably too. Maybe even the Capt or whatever the head person in charge's title is.

Now since the Dr. probably at one time while employed had decent standing. Now I'm wondering if he didn't help some cop out long ago by not reporting, or something else...and now this cop has gone up in the ranks. Heck it might not even be a cop but DA an attorney. The would throw road blocks up, do him a favor.

After all many's hinky meter went up quickly when LE stated SG died of accidental drowning. How did they not know if someone held her head down? Really? This reeks of a cover up.

Anyway WHAT A MESS of a CASE.

I only hope that calling SG case an accidental drowning was done only to piss off the SK. Wouldn't he want credit where credit is due? Perhaps this was done to get to him. I can only hope so. If so wow, how cruel to the mother of SG

They basically announced she had drowned before they announced they had found the body!

Reminds me somewhat of the Black Dahlia case. Steve Hodel's book The Black Dahlia Avenger describes how his surgeon father did many favors for corrupt LE, politicians, and other people of influence, knew a lot of their embarrassing medical secrets, and therefore got away with the murder of Elizabeth Short and others. Loved the book, couldn't put it down.

Thanks for the tip Redbird. I'll have to get it.

GC announced it last year too. The only thing he was incorrect about was the location of her body. He predicted that she drowned in the bay and was floated away to one of the dozens of deserted islands.

The community wants this to be ruled an accidental drowning and their wish shall be granted.

o. If so wow, how cruel to the mother of SG

SG's mother made them look bad, by which I mean she repeatedly exposed their lazy, shoddy, classist police work. If they can deny her the basic satisfaction of knowing how her daughter died, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they might do so.

Maybe. But with what little information they have, it's probably more prudent to say it's a drowning than upping the hysteria by saying it's a murder when they don't know.

There are definitely a few things that LE could have done better, IMO. Most notably, getting to the scene of SG's phone calls in under 45 minutes. But it's extremely common in cases like this for people to blame LE or say that they are not doing enough. That very well could be true, but we don't know what they're doing behind the scenes.

I specifically remember GC initially stating that he thinks she is most likely dead and that she was killed. At some point later he pulled a 180 and propagated the theory that she hit her head and drowned (which is too specific of a speculation if you ask me). We also later witnessed GC saying CPH was a great guy and that he wished CPH was his direct neighbor. And now we have flukeyou on camera screaming "tell the truth about the tapes" to GC, because fluke believes GC is covering for CPH because GC knows CPH deleted the tapes, hence GC owning up to it by stating, "we turned the tapes in and someone accidentally taped over them".

I think GC is a nice and naive old fellow who is one of the believers of CPH's stories. Seems that everyone who gets to know or has worked with CPH thinks he's an amazing and helpful fellow(hero), or that he is a pathological liar. I think GC falls into the former, but I also think that he is beginning to question his beliefs and will come out of denial eventually. It's harder to believe (comprehend) someone is a SK when you know them well or personally. It is much easier to see through someone's lies when they are a mere acquaintance.

if they don't know, it's most prudent to admit that they don't know.

He left Ohio a year later and moved to Ogunquit, Maine, in 1960, where he lived for two years as he wrote a novel, "The Last Happy Hour," about a hospital administrator bringing up a son by himself. "My father would never admit that any of it was anything but fiction," said his son, who lives in Point Lookout.
(snipped from CJH obituary.)

Except according to CJH's obituary the book was written in 1960, and MASH the television show was based on a book from 1968, the show aired from 72 to 83. But since CJH was survived only by his son and 3 grandchildren, we know who most likely put together the info for the obit don't we? Seeing as the book's copyright says 1976 and was published in 1976 and references years through out the 70's and 1976 specifically, I would say that the book was not written in 1960 as stated by the obituary, which then makes me take everything in the obituary with a few grains of salt. Why I bring this to attention is that there seems to be a smog of fiction constantly following CPH and his statements and claims.

But you really should read the 12 pages of the pdf, as 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 and whorehouses are mentioned again.

I also took interest in the line, "war heroes, like women who die in childbirth, go straight to heaven". from page 68.

I haven't read H's book but from what I've been reading about it, it sounds like he may have been attempting to emulate Catch-22 rather than Mash (or in addition to, perhaps. They're both satirical anti-war tomes, I believe.

Catch-22 happens to be my favourite novel. Good luck trying to duplicate its genius!)

Catch-22 was published in 1961. The obit you quoted said he moved to Maine in 1960 and lived there for 2 years writing the book, so perhaps he read Catch-22 and that inspired him to try to write his own book in that vein. (It didn't say he finished it or even started it in 1960.)

Not that this really matters, but I'm just putting it out there!

Sorry if this has already been addressed but I'm a late-comer: Has it been determined that these are actual, old school 'tapes', as in VHS?

It seems odd to me that an upscale community such as this would not have better security.

I need to read catch-22 again but I already know you are right, in a few ways the book imitates catch-22, there must be a reason the provider of info to the obit would want to say it was written in 1960, you only need to read it to know it was written in the 70's, it specifically references 1976 multiple occassions. Copyright is 1976, same for the published year.... why lie and say it was written in 1960? lol the truth will set you free cph, everything doesn't need to be a lie...

Hi, Did any of you read a post written by someone who says they saw the killer dumping a body off the Parkway? It was in that 1996 period of time ??? and the guy drove a white station wagon with wood panels on the side. He had seen this man in the same car before that time and also afterwards - the guy has owned that station wagon for many, many years.

Just curious what you guys think about this. I keep thinking about it since I read it. It must have been in a comment from LISK as that's the only other place I read.

Yeah, I read the same post over at the LISK site. I never know what to make of the stuff posted there. Especially lately.

Yea, I agree. But it was so much over the top I sat up straight like Prairie Dog. lol

I keep wondering how and why Jury Box's posts keep getting posted? Insanity defense?

We're not suppose to discuss named posters from other sites, quite sure. Let's just say some posters don't have much discretion. Yea, being nice.:floorlaugh:

Ooops. I will edit.

Thanks!
