It's a very big deal in the Mormon church. From what I have read, if you're not married by 31, you're kind of in la-la land, not fitting into the norms of the Mormon culture. I think it was important to TA for his image.

ETA: I've heard that she was initially not speaking to TA after their breakup, and the reason for that (I don't know) is possibly a reason she is a defense witness.

I think she's a defense witness because she wrote, in her blog, about how hard it was to say "no" to Travis and how persistent he could be. She also hinted that he was controlling, imo.
