I may be missing something regarding the new pictures of Gyorgy Brody. The info states they were taken in 1932.

Didn't we guesstimate the "Marguerite Kilroy" portrait was done in the late 1940's to early 1950's? If so, the individual aged greatly during that time period. I know that can happen to some of us!;)
We need to compare the picture of Istvan Ekenes to our pictures of Brody. The theory is that Ekenes may have appropriated the identity of Gyorgy Brody and immigrated to the US around 1940 (the reported date of Ekenes death). The picture of Gyorgy Brody is for informational purposes only - he is not our Brody.

Please advise us as to any new info from the police case file that you finally received. I am most interested in where Waters and Brody were immediately after Anna'a disappearance, who knew they were leaving town, the purpose of their trip, how long they were gone, who they were with, their alibies, etc....PLEASE do not tell me the police did not follow up on this line of investigation.

I wish that I could tell you differently, but the files only detail the efforts to locate Waters to interview him. Once he was located, he denied any involvement and LE left it at that. So unless additional information is included in the supplemental files that we did not receive (and are trying to obtain), they really did virtually nothing to investigate Waters.

In researching the legal filings re: Brody, Waters, Kukoda and The Historic Tenderloin District. THTD has filed several very small suits against a George Waters over the years.
This is interesting. Please forward what you have been able to find on this. Good work, MFM!

Doogie, thanks for clearing up why it was thought Enekes wasn't really dead.

Dr. Doogie-

I don't think it is our GW, but it is regarding property on Leavenworth St in the Tenderloin District, filed in 2005 and includes a La Drena Waters....I just found it odd.

Any lawsuits after 1982 would not be him. As far as we can tell, he never owned any property in San Francisco (remember, we have completed credit applicationsfor Waters that do not list any assets beyond his car).

DrDoogie or Annasmom, has the FBI ever been contacted about Anna's disappearance? Since we believe that she may have been taken to another state, wouldn't they be able to open an investigation on her? I know that they would be able to find who the phone # belonged to (the one found in GW's wallet upon his death) They would also be able to see if GW had anyone receiving any moneys on his social security after his death.

Since GW and GB left for a week after Anna's disappearance, maybe they went to another state and petitioned the courts there for a guardian to be appointed for Anna. The someone being the person whom they had abduct her. He could have told the judge that Anna's mom was dead and he, being a Dr. wasn't able to care for her properly and needed someone to care for her and the judge probably wouldn't have questioned him.

I don't know why this keeps bugging me, but I worked in the court system and I know if the judge thought it was in the best interest of the child they would grant guardinship to another person (aunt-grandmother) with the cabinet of human resorces overseeing the process. They would have to do a home evaluation and check the persons background records and if told it was a relative they wouldn't question it. I know it can be done and I wonder if that is what happened to Anna, she may have lived with someone who loved her and she thought her mom was dead, so never bothered looking for her. Why don't you contact someone in the FBI and see if they would be willing to get involved. All of the above is JMHO

I know that the FBI has not been involved in the active investigation of the case. In the book, Annasmom relates correspondence with a special agent who was looking into a rash of child abductions in the SF bay area in the 1980's who stated that he was aware of Anna's case and would review it to see if it was related to the other abductions.

In 1973, the FBI only could get involved if evidence existed that the victim was taken across a state line (as you mentioned). The laws changed at a later date that allowed FBI investigation of any child abduction regardless of interstate travel. I do not know if cases that occured prior to the change were "grandfathered" in so that they can be investigated.

Dr. Doogie-

I realize that GW was estranged from almost everyone in his life except GB by the time Anna was abducted. However, were his family members ever questioned as to his whereabouts during the "missing week" time period?
It seems he was still in contact with them for financial support.

I do not believe that LE questioned them, but Annasmom has remained in contact with them over the years and trusts that they would have relayed any relevant information to her concerning the disappearance. Waters had completely severed his relationship with his parents and brother over their refusal to continue giving him financial support a couple of years prior to Anna's disappearance. The frustration and disgust of his family concerning his activities over the years was total - they would not have provided him with any financial or material support.

Why would GW have even needed any financial support? Wasn't he working something like 3 jobs at the time? Seems like he would have been making more than enough to continue their lifestyle in that seedy hotel!

He seemed always to be trying to get money. Sometimes it was like a test of friendship or something; he'd ask someone for a large amount of money and when the relative or friend refused, he would break off contact with them. I have never been able to decide how much of GW's behavior he should be held responsible for. My brother believes he was the victim of two wars, WWII, because he was in a concentration camp as a young child, and the Vietnam war, since the possibility of going to Vietnam seemed to have a lot to do with the onset of his psychological problems.

I am quoting this from memory, so the exact details may be off, but the general info is true: I have his tax returns from 1975 and 1977 where his income is listed as $50,000-$75,000. While not rich, he had a comfortable amount of money by 1970's standards. He did have student loans and legal bills relating to his draft status that he was paying off, but well within a reasonable debt-load by anyone's standards. He also had alimony payments of $125 a month which ended in late 1972 and $175 a month of child support which ended with in January 1973 with Anna's disappearance. And remember, he was fully supporting Brody and paying for three hotel rooms in San Francisco.

I don’t know if you know this or not but often times Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is misdiagnosed as schizophrenia because of the overlap in symptoms. PTS is a relatively new diagnosis however it is certainly not a new disorder. Given this gentleman’s past he could very well have been PTS. Here are some symptoms of complex PTS (those of whom were subjected to months to years of total control by another, i.e. concentration camps, POW's etc.):

Alterations in emotional regulation, which may include symptoms such as persistent sadness, suicidal thoughts, explosive anger, or inhibited anger * Alterations in consciousness, such as forgetting traumatic events, reliving traumatic events, or having episodes in which one feels detached from one's mental processes or body

* Alterations in self-perception, which may include a sense of helplessness, shame, guilt, stigma, and a sense of being completely different than other human beings

* Alterations in the perception of the perpetrator, such as attributing total power to the perpetrator or becoming preoccupied with the relationship to the perpetrator, including a preoccupation with revenge

* Alterations in relations with others, including isolation, distrust, or a repeated search for a rescuer

* Alterations in one's system of meanings, which may include a loss of sustaining faith or a sense of hopelessness and despair

This may help in explaining some of his behaviors and the reasons why he did the things he did and why he was so easily led.

It is hard to quantify what effect his early years in a Japanese POW camp had on Waters. He spent the very formative years of his childhood experiencing the sort of horrors that broke the spirit of many adults. There is no doubt that these experiences shaped his personality until the day he died. It may have been PTS, paranoid schizophrenia or some other actual disease that afflicted him, but its genesis was in the camp in the Philippines.

My mother spent many years as a nurse in the mental health system back when the state still took care of their mentally ill. Mental illness can take so many forms and have so many different symptoms. No label fits perfectly. Regardless of what his 'label' was he was surely a sick man.

Dr. Doogie you have done an amazing thing here. My faith in humanity and the goodness of strangers has increased dramatically since joining this site. You are doing wonderful work here and you are an inspiration to all of us.

Thanks for your kind words. I was just on the phone this morning with Annasmom discussing how we had both reached a physical and emotional "brick wall" and what we can do to climb over it. Your comments help lighten the load.

I found a website today that looks pretty interesting. There are thousands of pictures posted there and many are unknown. You can post a picture and if anyone can identify it then they can contact you. What about posting GB's picture there? Here is the link: http://www.familyoldphotos.com/

Shadow, you never cease to amaze me with your internet finds. That's a great website and maybe someone will recognize the old coot (oops, did I say that!).
