Boy, I betcha nobody saw this coming! The city's own findings which were released about two weeks ago found the zoo at fault in many areas: not responding to the brothers' calls for help, reporting the incident as two nutsos to 911, having no one on the grounds to handle the tiger attack, and when the guy got there, he couldn't get to the weapon, etc.

These brothers will win.

They won't win on the defamation suit, only perhaps the neglect. On the defamation suit, their character will be called into question, and Paul just got arrested for shoplifting!

You are all going to love this:

Tiger-mauling victim arrested on suspicion of shoplifting

The local twist, with lots of comments:

That's priceless. Well, perhaps he won't need to shoplift anymore once he lines his pockets with some of the Zoo's money. And while, I'm no fan of encouraging miscreants, the Zoo is going to pay him a lot of money and I think they should.

Unfortunately, this pair probably will 'win' loads of money from the zoo.

and IMO, unfortunately, i suspect they will spend all their money on fast cars, boozea and drugs and will put others in danger.

i hope they hurt themselves before others.

Nothing that happens after should enter into the civil suit. So I doubt if the shop lifting thing will play into the suit at all.

As far as for defamation: they were accused of "helping" the tiger escape. False. they were accused of "throwing tree limbs" at the tiger. False. they were accused of using "slingshots" to torment the tiger. False. the fact that they had been drinking and smoking pot was "leaked" to the press. You don't have to have sterling character to be the victim of a concerted campaign to smear you. They'll win on defamation. What is going to matter is that the spokesperson for the zoo spoke deliberately, knowingly spoke untruths, and did it WITH THE INTENT to harm the brothers and to "protect the zoo." You can't do that in America and get away with it. IOW, the suit should be decided upon the laws governing defamation. And those laws were clearly and deliberately brooched.

They'll win. We might not like these guys, but legally they have a much stronger leg to stand on than the zoo.

I bet the shoplifting was more of a thrill thing than a "necessity." I mean these guys drive mercedes and bmw's!

I just realized there was no link to the findings of the investigation of the zoo.

Poor training and short staffing added to the tragedy of a fatal tiger mauling on Christmas Day at the San Francisco Zoo, according to a new report by a national accrediting group.

Most zoo employees had been allowed to leave early for the holiday, and the ones who remained did not have the keys to the area where the shotgun was stored or the zoo's vehicles. And contract employees such as workers at the zoo cafe had not been trained how to respond in emergencies.

"The zoo is too often chasing problems rather than proactively addressing known concerns," said a report issued by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums' accreditation commission. "This will require a shift in culture and the supervisory and maintenance staff to make it happen."

The report cites a litany of problems with the zoo and its reaction to the tiger escape, but calls the overall reaction "impressive."

Floh, don't disregard CA juries. A couple of semi-important points. Da bros peer group aren't allowed to vote; so since jurors are called from the voter registration list, their peers won't be on their jury. Most voters in CA have had it with gang members and thugs, so I wouldn't be at all surprised with a decision not in their favor.

Tiger attack victim suspected in additional shoplifting incidents

SAN LEANDRO -- The younger of two brothers who survived a Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo is now suspected of stealing more than $1,000 in electronic and video-game equipment from three Target stores in the East Bay, police said today.

Paul Dhaliwal, 19, as arrested March 27 by San Leandro police after security officers at the Target store at the Bayfair Center mall on East 14th Street saw him hiding two Nintendo Wii controllers in his pants, police Lt. Tom Overton said.

An investigation led police to conclude that Dhaliwal stole similar equipment from the Target store in Livermore on March 24 and from the Hayward store March 25 and again March 27, Overton said today.

Authorities identified Dhaliwal with the help of store surveillance cameras, Overton said. The total loss from the three Target stores exceeds $1,000, he said.

The shoplifting may just be how they manage to have these cars.

I'm hoping to at least be able to say that my sympathies, and compassion, are entirely with the tiger.

Well, I just got back from the S.F. Zoo! I ended up going on the field trip with Brownies and we had a safe visit. The Lion House is "Closed until further notice". We did not go by the Siberian Tiger exhibit, although the employees told me all the big cats are back on display, but we did go to see the Sumatran Tiger, LeAnne, who had 3 tiger cubs and we got to see them. The enclosure was about a 12' high chain link fence, but it was fully fenced on top. The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of the tigers, but she still moved quickly and looked impressive. That's the first time she's brought her cubs out, and the zoo employees said the cubs weren't officially on display yet!

Linask,
Glad you got to go to the SF zoo, thanks for the info.
What's your take on the mauling situation...
do you think the wall was easily accessible by the tiger?

I didn't get to see it today because where they took us to see the Sumatran tiger was directly on the other side. My husband does believe that the tiger jumped up and scaled the wall to escape.
