Tiger kills man at San Francisco Zoo (Part 3)

  • #241
I didn't get to see it today because where they took us to see the Sumatran tiger was directly on the other side. My husband does believe that the tiger jumped up and scaled the wall to escape.

Gotcha. That's what I thought because the wall looked awfully short to me.

S.F. denies financial claim of tiger-attack survivors

San Francisco officials released documents today indicating the city has denied a claim by two San Jose brothers seeking an unspecified amount of money for compensation after they survived a Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo.

A letter from the city attorney's office dated Thursday states there is "no indication of liability on the part of the city and county," and directs the brothers to file a claim with San Francisco Zoological Society, the nonprofit organization that operates the zoo.

The zoo and its animals are owned by the city of San Francisco.

The brothers, Kulbir and Paul Dhaliwal, contend that they suffered serious injuries and emotional harm when a 243-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana escaped its enclosure and mauled them on Dec. 25. The tiger killed 19-year-old Paul Dhaliwal's close friend Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, before police shot and killed the animal.

Thanks for the update, Buzz. The zoo will deny it right up until the point where they pay gobs of money to those boys. Heck, they might even deny it during and after the payout and into perpetuity!

The surviving brothers imo should get nothing.
The young man who was killed, his family should get something.

Tiger mauling victim Dhaliwal charged with 5 felonies

SAN LEANDRO — A San Jose man at the center of the 2007 Christmas Day tiger mauling incident at San Francisco Zoo was charged with five felony counts today in connection with four Southern Alameda County shoplifting incidents, according to police.

Amritpal "Paul" Dhaliwal, 19, of San Jose was arrested March 27 at a San Leandro Target store for allegedly stuffing video game equipment into his pants, Lt. Tom Overton said. Dhaliwal was charged with three burglaries and two counts of grand theft, Overton said. He is accused of shoplifting at the Hayward Target on March 24, at the San Leandro Target on March 27, and at a Livermore Target on March 25 and 27.

Dhaliwal and his 23-year-old brother, Kulbir Dhaliwal, were seriously injured — and their 17-year-old friend Carlos Souza of San Jose killed — on Christmas Day by a 250-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana who scaled a retaining wall at the San Francisco Zoo that was about four feet below industry standards, experts said.

Dhaliwal's arrest on March 27 came just hours after his lawyers filed a notice of claim against San Francisco County, citing negligence that led to the mauling incident. Dhaliwal posted $1,500 bail on March 28, but is in custody in a Santa Clara jail on an unrelated probation violation, Overton said.

Thanks for the news, Buzz! This show the stupidity ~ shoplifting at Target and thinking the surveillance cameras they have all over the store wouldn't catch him? Too bad the zoo didn't have the same. Maybe there is some justice and he'll go to prison for these crimes though.

Yes and if his parents had any sense they'd be suing the Dhaliwal family...their son was a minor, yet he had been consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana supplied by his "friends"...which impared his senses at the time of the attack.

Put the blame where it really belongs. On those 2 criminals where it belongs on the Dhaliwal brothers!

Who also lied directly about his whereabouts when his father called to look for him!

I think we know the answer to that one but sadly it was Tatiana who had to lose her life because of it. :(

A teenager who was killed by an escaped tiger at the zoo had marijuana and alcohol in his system at the time, the San Francisco Medical Examiner said.

The toxicology report released Monday was included with an autopsy that concluded "blunt force injuries of the head and neck" killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr.

Unlike Cardoza, I think the fact that they were inebriated is totally relevant to their behavior provoking the big cats at the zoo. We know they yelled at the lions...

The parents of a teenager killed in a Christmas Day tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo sued the city and the zoo Tuesday as the first anniversary of the mauling neared.

Marilza and Carlos Sousa filed a wrongful death suit in San Francisco Superior Court almost a year after their son, Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, was killed when a Siberian tiger escaped its enclosure.

Their lawyer, Michael Cardoza, said the family hopes they can reach a settlement with the zoo. "It will never bring total closure to this, but it will begin their healing process because they won't have to relive this again through a lawsuit," Cardoza said Tuesday.

Matt Dorsey, a spokesman for City Attorney Dennis Herrera, said Tuesday the city's agreements with the nonprofit San Francisco Zoological Society means the zoo must decide whether to settle.

"We do hope that all of the parties involved in the case can reach a just resolution," Dorsey said. "We also recognize what a difficult tragedy this has been for the Sousa family and our hearts go out to them."

If I could afford it I'd pay every last cent of this trial cost for the Zoo. If these idiots see dime one for their idiocy I'll spew my Maypo!!

Rewarding idiocy in this country has to stop! :furious:

Thanks for this update, chicoliving. I had not thought about this case in a while.

I do believe that the zoo will pay some money to this family and I believe that they should. I don't see it as rewarding idiocy (the amount the zoo pays will be lower based on any contributing actions of the victims) - I see it as giving the zoo a strong fiscal reminder that dangerous wild animals an unsuspecting public pays money to see should NEVER be able to escape their enclosures.

I hope the zoo has to pay for allowing dangerous animals to be able to get out and kill someone. No teenager deserves to die for riling up some animal. There's no way the boys caused bodily damage to Tatiana. They might have been stupid, but so are millions of other teens and college age guys. What if it had been some older woman with a few mentally retarded teens who yelled and angered the cat.

I totally agree with you! No one, in their right mind, would go to the zoo if they thought that the dangeous animals could get out!
