Interesting account here from someone who’s done the trip:

The disclaimer “This experimental vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, emotional trauma, or death”. Yeah I’ll pass, thanks. Crikey.
Holy crapola.
So, somewhat like a reinforced container built to withstand such depths and with steering/descending/ascending capabilities -- but not much else ?
How is that even allowable ?

With the price of the ticket, and considering the personal wealth of at least one possible occupant, one would think they had absolutely state of the art tech !
Imo.

Intrepid travelers will sail from the Atlantic coast of Canada for an 8-day expedition to dive on the iconic wreck that lies 380 miles offshore and 3,800 meters below the surface

The Titan submersible can seat 5 people. This roster will usually include: a pilot, three Mission Specialists, and one content expert.

They have a health thing on it and says they have enough air and stuff for 96 hours. I pray for the families not sure how many people are on there they say it holds five.

Per CNN (TV), The company waited for two hours before reporting it to the Coast Guard.
Contact was lost 1:45 hours after it started the dive.
As of approx 2:00 CST today, the submersible has been missing for about 24 hours.

I posted a Sky New video a couple of pages back. One of the experts said if there's no contact with the sub for 24 hours, it has an emergency reset and will safely float to the surface if possible.

Sounds like as a crew member it’s incredibly basic to operate, not much to do except look at sea monsters fish until you reach Titanic. I’m sure all the state of the art tech is going on above the surface, and it must be the best tech there is, so what’s gone so wrong?!

Yes, I think, if they are no longer alive, that it happened instantly to all of them at the same time. Can you imagine 2 miles deep of water on top of you? The pressure..
Takes my breath away just thinking about it

Urgh this is the stuff of nightmares for me. I hope they’re found safe soon.

It’s an 8 day expedition but did someone say it’s only 8 hours in the sub? I assume they do some training and practice dives and other prep before the main event. I’d like to know how far the floating platform is from the shipwreck, and how long the journey to it is meant to take.

That's good to hear.
Hope all will be well with them & they're rescued !

My .02 is that this incident may impact people's desire to take another such excursion to see the wreck ?
Not that (imo !) there were that many adventurers clamoring to go down there.

US Coast Guard to hold news conference at 4:30 p.m. ET on missing submersible.

CNN is now running a 'Live Update' thread. Use the above link.

Yep, you’d think it could never happen again! This sub is carefully monitored and it’s gone into the water from a floating platform in the ocean, on a directly programmed course to Titanic. It shouldn’t have gone astray.

I’m hoping the pilot and passengers (aka crew) are blissfully unaware they’re lost and it’s just the tracking that’s stopped working. Seems unlikely though.

They’re in iceberg alley and it’s treacherous on a good day. I understand wanting to see the Titanic. If I were a billionaire I’d do it ten times. But it’s risky.

The icebergs travel south.

Maybe ?

But (again I'm not savvy about submersibles), wouldn't there be a gps of sorts ?
So even if caught in the wreck or if part of it collapsed, couldn't they people on the mothership tell where they were located, even if the sub wasn't moving ?

"GPS isn’t waterproof. The navigation system depends on radio waves, which break down rapidly in liquids, including seawater. To track undersea objects like drones or whales, researchers rely on acoustic signaling."
