Anyone remember the Glomar Explorer? IIRC it was built for the purpose of retrieving a Soviet sub from the ocean floor? It was funded by the Hughes corporation and that is all I remember, I was a kid at the time it was built.

I know it takes a certain degree of arrogance to get anywhere with progress and discovery, but I think without a healthy measure of skepticism and methodical testing and planning for adverse outcomes, then you're setting yourself up to be a cautionary tale. The problem is, the more arrogant people are, the less likely they are to be worried about safety and the more likely they are to think it's worth the risk.

Expert says pipe-laying ship on scene
BBC News has been speaking to marine scientist and expedition leader David Mearns, who has been keeping a close eye on developments off Newfoundland.He tells us that a commercial pipe-laying ship has arrived in the area where the submersible was last reported, and says this is welcome news.
“Just in the last hour or so... another commercial vessel, a very capable pipe laying vessel, modern ship, with ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) capabilities, is actually over the site now and we’re just hoping that it has the capabilities to reach those kind of depths – 3,800 metres – to search for the submersible and have the ability to recover it.
"There is some hope that that could happen.”

Deep-sea mapping company ready to join search efforts, but is being held up due to transport issues
From CNN’s Artemis MoshtaghianDeep sea-mapping company Magellan, most famously known for its one-of-a-kind deep sea imagery of the Titanic, is fighting against the clock to try and get involved in the search and rescue efforts underway to locate the submersible that’s been missing in the Atlantic since Sunday—but a key transport issue holding them back.
Magellan Chair David Thompson told CNN that his team is familiar with the site of the wreck and received written notice from OceanGate Expeditions, the company running the expedition to the Titanic, to mobilize early Monday “by all means necessary — time is of the essence.”
CNN has reached out to OceanGate for comment.
But it needs an aircraft — specifically, a C-17 Globemaster III military cargo jet — with the ability to transport its deep-sea diving equipment, which is located in the UK, and deliver it to Canada in order to launch its operation.
Thompson said the US Air Force or UK Royal Air Force have not gotten back to Magellan letting them know if or when a plane can be procured to use to transport the equipment they need to Canada to embark on rescue efforts.
Most of the equipment needed for the deep-sea dive is in Jersey, located in the Channel Islands off the coast of France, with some other equipment in Aberdeen, Thompson said.
There’s an element of serendipity at play in all this, as Thompson said that the equipment needed for this deep-sea expedition is normally not docked in the Channel Islands, where the company is based.
“It's normally on a vessel floating around the world, quite frankly. But by pure coincidence, we had it off whilst we were changing vessels and it just happened to be in Jersey at this point as opposed to on a boat in the middle of the sea,” he explained.
The quickest the Magellan team say they and their equipment could be at the site of the search and rescue operation underway in the Atlantic would be somewhere between 24 and 30 hours.
The missing 21-foot vessel has life support for up to 96 hours, according to the OceanGate website. US Coast Guard officials estimated Monday afternoon that they anticipate that the vessel has somewhere between 70 to 96 hours of emergency oxygen available for the passengers onboard.
CNN has reached out to the UK Royal Air Force as well as the US Air Force for comment.

Oh, I really hate this. I panic driving through tunnels - I hate the idea of anything being above me like that and being trapped. I have my own personal thoughts on the ethics of companies offering trips to the Titanic wreck (it's a hard no from me), but I really was hoping for a positive outcome to this. I'm not so optimistic anymore. I just hope they weren't scared and didn't suffer if it does take the inevitable turn that I think it will. I continue to hope I am wrong.

"Time is very short and the next few days will be critical," an oceans expert has told BBC News.Dr Simon Boxall, University of Southampton lecturer in oceanography, said it was a "real challenge" to identify where the missing submersible is and to get it back.
Describing what the conditions are likely to be in the submersible if it is on the sea floor, he said: "It's going to be hot, it's going to be cramped.
"There is no escape pod. If you came out the water at those depths you'd be crushed, so they're totally reliant on the submersible being found."
He believes its unlikely the Titan is on the surface, and that it may have become snared on part of the wreckage.
"It's an enormous challenge, one we've never had to tackle before," he added. "There have been tragic cases of military submarines sitting on the seafloor where they have a lot more resource and lot more oxygen available, but in this case time is very short and the next few days will be critical."

I have done quite a few adventurous things but I would not get into a submarine. I’m fairly claustrophobic and the thought of being underwater is overwhelming.

He added Magellan’s remotely operated vehicle was unique in that it was likely the only asset available to have a winch capable of dragging submersibles from the depths of the ocean, while it can also detect signals and send them above the surface.

Time is running out if they're alive, and every effort to rescue them needs to be allowed ; from any country that has the capabilities !!!!
That coupled with the complete darkness, unnatural sounds and the feeling of movement without any sense of direction. I am surprised they allow minors to make the trip as well. Someone could snap and be a problem.

David Mearns, a deep water search-and-recovery expert who knows two of the passengers on board the missing Titan submersible, has said he is “very worried” by the situation.
Mearns, a marine scientist and oceanographer who specialises in searching for shipwrecks, is friends with the British billionaire Hamish Harding and knows French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet professionally.
He described Harding as very charming” and “very adventurous”, and said Nargeolet was “very well known” in the Titanic community. Speaking to Radio 4’s World At One, Mearns said:
