Anyone remember the Glomar Explorer? IIRC it was built for the purpose of retrieving a Soviet sub from the ocean floor? It was funded by the Hughes corporation and that is all I remember, I was a kid at the time it was built.
The ancient Greeks called it hubris. The unsinkable ship… can’t remember where I’ve heard that one before…
“We know the wreck site, we know the location, and the equipment we are trying to get picked up is the equipment we used to do that scanning of the Titanic,” Thompson said.
“Through our connections locally in the islands here, we have good connections with the government, and we have good connections with the ports of Jersey, which is the airport and harbors: They are ready and willing to open the airport at a moment's notice relatively speaking, and that includes right now,” the Magellan chairman said.
And for what they charged for it too...Appalled is the word that comes to my mind, not amazed.
Oh, I really hate this. I panic driving through tunnels - I hate the idea of anything being above me like that and being trapped. I have my own personal thoughts on the ethics of companies offering trips to the Titanic wreck (it's a hard no from me), but I really was hoping for a positive outcome to this. I'm not so optimistic anymore. I just hope they weren't scared and didn't suffer if it does take the inevitable turn that I think it will. I continue to hope I am wrong.
That coupled with the complete darkness, unnatural sounds and the feeling of movement without any sense of direction. I am surprised they allow minors to make the trip as well. Someone could snap and be a problem.I have done quite a few adventurous things but I would not get into a submarine. I’m fairly claustrophobic and the thought of being underwater is overwhelming.
.... That isn't a two hour delay after last contact before notifying the Coast Guard. That is an almost seven hour delay. Here's a timeline of the missing sub's whereabouts

British rescue mission for Titan ‘blocked by US officials’
A remotely operated vehicle capable of winching the stricken submersible Titan out of the Atlantic has been blocked from joining the rescue mission by the US government, The Telegraph understands.www.yahoo.com
He added Magellan’s remotely operated vehicle was unique in that it was likely the only asset available to have a winch capable of dragging submersibles from the depths of the ocean, while it can also detect signals and send them above the surface.
Emphasis mine.

Who died on tourist submersible to Titanic wreckage?
The British billionaire and chairman of aviation company Action Aviation was among those on the vessel. "It is an amazingly beautiful wreck," Rush told Britain's Sky News of the Titanic earlier this year.www.yahoo.com

Take Yahoo with a slight grain of salt.
Esp. the first article -- in regards to the U.S. blocking the U.K.'s use of the Magellan.
Hoping it was misreporting !
Time is running out if they're alive, and every effort to rescue them needs to be allowed ; from any country that has the capabilities !!!!
He added:This also happens to be my field, search and recovery, but when it’s involving with people you know personally, the impact of it is bigger.
When I found out initially that Hamish was on board that was very upsetting and then when later in the day that PH was also with him on the sub, which was almost a typical thing to expect, they would have got on fantastically well these two characters, that really started to make the day a lot worse.
When something does go wrong and it is missing, that is dire. And we’re all very very worried and concerned for our friends and the other people on board.
I once visited a museum that featured a real submarine you could go inside. I felt uncomfortable being inside, even above water. And I was inside by myself, just imagining what it would be like to be in close proximity to other passengers. That coupled with the complete darkness, unnatural sounds and the feeling of movement without any sense of direction. I am surprised they allow minors to make the trip as well. Someone could snap and be a problem.
