I have also started to see that she essentially has been groomed too - and I bet in 5 years if she gets some meaningful counseling in the meantime, she will have a completely different view of her marriage and him and what happened. When she blames the victim and portrays her as some temptress (which is the vibe I get), she is doing her "go-to" move, which is to blame anyone but her own husband for what he did. She will one day come to know why the public's reaction to her has been negative. The daughters have also been brainwashed to believe that their father knows all.

I don't think you can call it grooming when it's a teenager one year older than you.

For the record, people kayak in the ocean all the time. I don't think there is any doubt that a kayak is more than adequate to travel from the US to Mexico on the ocean. Many people have done that by swimming. Kayaking would be easier. I believe the biggest danger would be sharks, not the waves.

He had only kayaked a couple of times. No way could he handle waves like that. And ET never kayaked. The plan was nuts and if he tried it they might not be here today.

I disagree that many people have not swam across the border. Here is a video of MANY people swimming across the border. Kayaks are involved too. Before the fence was put in the ocean, it was even easier. Even with that, everyday people still swim across the border.

This is a video of a recent protest by athletes in support of immigrants, this was prearranged and all these people had their passports which were cleared by MX border agents before they left CA.

"Swimmers from the United States, Mexico, Israel, New Zealand and South Africa were escorted by a Mexican navy ship as they reached a beach in Tijuana, a short distance from a border fence that juts into the Pacific Ocean. More than 100 schoolchildren cheered, and Mexico’s top immigration official in the region applauded them at a public celebration of the 6.2-mile swim from Imperial Beach in San Diego County."

That ocean border on the north side is manned 24/7 by US border patrol agents, sonar and infrared. There are not groups of people swimming and kayaking around out there like this protest video might lead some to believe.

Actually, we've not been told that ET was in the kayak with him when he did the test run (nor how long that 'test run' was--though I'm inclined to agree it was likely pretty short). Only bringing this up as I think another poster also commented on this (previous page). Not to make light of it; just to differentiate between facts we know and don't know.

One fact we do know (from the 20/20 video I just viewed onYoutube), is that she was not pasted to his side 24/7. One clip of him shopping in Walmart shows him repeatedly cycling back to the hair color aisle with his cart; she was not in that video clip. So there is no reason to assume he did his 'test run' with her in the kayak, IMO.

He hadn't left yet when that Walmart video was shot. If he actually did a test run, which would only be in the bay, not the open ocean, as it would take a long time and rentals aren't allowed out there, she probably was with him. I wonder if the whole story is even true though. We only have his unreliable word. Since no ones be from San Diego has mentioned renting or selling a kayak to him, I kind of doubt it happened.

Not to parse, but I *believe* today she may be 16. Read in a recent article that she just celebrated her 16th bday sometime in the last week or so. Glad for her dad's sake she was back in TN to celebrate it.

May 16 is her birthday, or right around there.

From imperial beach. San Diego is farther. Imperial beach is right on the border with Tijuana and watched heavily by border portrol, cameras etc.

I'm having a hard time imagining him just renting a kayak in San Diego without being recognized, but who knows, maybe it was easy to blend into the crowd. I also have a hard time imagining him driving the entire length of CA without being noticed. Maybe they stayed in Berkeley and avoided SF because the of the license plate scanners at the bridge toll booths. I wonder if they would have gone to Canada if they hadn't run out of money.

I wonder what her psychs think of all this and what they are advising the family.

True. But you never know what will be the straw that broke the camel's back. This is all so overwhelming for a teen. It's very sad. Repeated exploitation. It's hard for me at this point to know how this kid is going to be able to recover sufficiently enough to function with so much betrayal of her innocence and trust happening.

I mean I understand why they may be revealing all this stuff. It could be strategic. ET will have to live in the area for a couple more years and it's clear that before she even left she was branded with a scarlet letter as the seductress who tried to break up an upstanding, Christian family.

I think they are doing all they can to show the world that indeed, ET is a
child and is the victim in this case.

Clearly, based on the actions of the school in not protecting her (my God, they let her go on a field trip with the predator), the bullying by students and staff and the comments of his wife in blaming the kid, she is not seen as the one who was harmed but rather, as the one who caused the harm.

Ugh. I just wish this family could move far away. To a town where newcomers aren't ostracized, isolated and bullied. To a region where people are better educated and not as narrow minded.

To me its a godforsaken place.

In that this is absolutely fact and it's a certainty ET will have to be tuitioned to another school (and her siblings as well given the atmosphere), isn't there some way they can ask for emergency injunctive relief? I really believe that there is simply no way that family can have any reasonable expectation of being successful in that community, let alone safe.

Yeah. I really agree with this. I'm sort of confused about the portrayal of JC as a young woman who was seduced and manipulated by TC in the same manner he groomed ET. Unless she had brain damage or a different kind of cognitive disorder at the time they dated, or unless he was in some sort of significant position of power over her (employer, teacher, therapist, prison guard, attorney), there was no imbalance of power.

Further, there is zero evidence that he was abusive to her during the marriage, in any way. Or that he displayed any sort of domination or control of her.

The fact is, he, like some criminals or creeps are able to do, fooled his wife as to his true character. He hid behind this veneer of loyal, upstanding Christian family man.

She is understandably shocked and confused. This was her partner. Her other half. Her best friend. She thought she knew him and he was her whole world.

But there is nothing to suggest she is some little, brainwashed and dominated wife. Frankly, she seems to be able to speak for herself and speak up well and easily.

I don't see her as a weak, indoctrinated submissive who needs to be helped to come out from under his spell.

I think she knows who she is and what she is doing.

Frankly, she is not that different from many family members of perps who refuse to believe their mate or dad or child could have committed a crime. Except she has no choice but to accept that he has at this point.

And except she has made some clear statements shifting at least some of the blame to the 15 year old victim.

I don't dislike this woman. She seems nice enough. And I don't blame her for this at all. I think it is easy for a spouse to be fooled and even if her gut started to give her signs it is a big jump from that to knowing. And to having the responsibility to rescue a child.

But what I don't like and where I do cast blame is her attitude toward her husband's student. The unsophisticated abuse victim he molested via a classic pattern of grooming. And I'm going to stand by that. I'm not in her shoes but I hope I would do better then she.

Her comments in regard to ET have not been right and I don't think there is justification for them. They hurt this kid and add to the atmosphere of that town and the attitude that helped make ET vulnerable to his abuse, to begin with.

Yeah unless an immigrant is a professional, escorted swimmer like these folks, it isn't happening. People aren't immigrating by swimming across the border.

And TC ain't no athlete.

Do you mean in the context of the lawsuit against the school? Emergency relief in the form of tuition paid to a private school elsewhere or something? I don't think so.

I think the closest thing they could get via any sort of action would be a district-provided tutor like they give for kids who are too sick to attend school. They'd have to appeal to the district for that.

IMO, this school was so negligent in the way this case was handled from the beginning, ET's family will win a suit of the Board of Education.

Additionally, the BOE owes ET an education! It is their responsibility to furnish it wherever the family attorney, psychiatrists, and ET feel this can be accomplished with the least confrontations for ET.

Bless her heart. If this is not a big enough mess for her to deal with, her Mother's trial is coming up soon. Will she have to testify at it? I sure hope not.

My opinions only.

 • #875
My question is why would he even attempt that? Once in Mexico how was he going to travel with no car and only a kayak? Totally stupid plan.

I agree, I don't know why he would attempt that. They could have accomplished the same thing much easier, by simply driving or walking across the border. Maybe he did research and realized that if they crossed the border, they would be trapped in the Mexican Border Zone, and have no way to continue on or return to the US.

With the outing of everything private of ET, as a child testifying against the mother, I would perhaps NOW reconsider testifying against my mother in court at this time seeing how my sibling's chit has been all over the internet. It would definitely affect me if I were them.

Just saying... what folks are telling you is private, is splashed all over the internet for the world. No greater fear I would have as to have my private information on my mother and family shared with the world. :cow: :moo:

I watched on youtube the movie "Trust" that someone upthread posted. I agree, that perhaps most of the emotional longer term damage was created after the fact by the reactions and actions of the family, which were highlighted in the movie.

The point is that many people have swam across the border. Doing so by itself is not really a big deal. Yes it has some risk, but it is doable. The same for kayaks. The US Border Patrol, patrols only the north side of the border. They intercept Mexican people who swim north across the border everyday.

About 18 miles. I would expect that he would have tried to start from a point closer. Though it could be possible to do it from San Diego too.

He managed to travel for over one month without being recognized. It's important to remember that not everybody follows these stories like people on WS do. 99.99%+ of Americans wouldn't recognize TC today, or have any idea who he is.
