One dead, one wounded in shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville

A male teenager was killed and a police officer wounded Monday afternoon in a shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, police and sources say.

The Knoxville Police Department confirmed the fatality in an emailed statement, and the confirmed the shooting without details on its Twitter account. The shooting occurred at about 3:15 p.m. A medical examiner's vehicle left the school about 5 p.m.

The source said the wounded police officer is the Austin-East school resource officer. He was shot in the hip and is undergoing surgery, the source told Knox News.

The source also said one person has been detained.

Knoxville Police Department (KPD) said multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Austin-East Magnet High School for reports of a person "who was possibly armed in the school."

What a day. What a rotten, painful day. Like high school isn't bad enough for kids this year. If there is a good part of this, it's the quote below. This officer is a true good guy, and I hope he and everyone else recovers quickly and fully.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon told CNN affiliate WVLT that she met with the injured officer, and thanked him for putting his life on the line for the students and staff at the school.

"He is conscious and he's in good spirits. I met with his wife, he's going to be OK," she said, adding that the officer will need to undergo surgery. "He said that he'd rather that he be hurt than anybody else."
