Just wanted to mention, coyote behavior is different in different places. In the desert southwest if they're driven out of the hills and down to the desert floor, for food or water, they'll act differently then they do in say, Toronto, where they'd become accustomed to humans, or in farming/forest areas where they're used to farm traffic & humans. I've lived in both areas and the coyotes in southern CA in the dessert walked right into your yard and looked at you as if to say "hello, I'm about to eat your cat - just thought you'd like to know". In southern Ontario, the ones in farm land sneak around your house and run as soon as a puppy comes outside and starts yapping. In urban areas here, they aren't afraid of people at all. They seem to be very adaptable creatures depending on their locations, and situations.
I've never lived in or spent much time in TN so I really don't know what the coyotes are like there in the wooded areas but I would suspect they're sneaky critters like the wooded areas here - and will slink off if they see/hear humans, unless they're sick, separated from the pack, or scouts.
moo. (I read about them all the time, since we have kids/grandkids and they're spotted here all the time)
