GUILTY TN - Sheriff: 5th grade boy kills 8-year-old MaKayla Dyer with shotgun

I live here, its a very sad time right now, I live in the next town over about 10 minutes away

This is horrible. We are a family who owns guns. We are very conscious of gun safety - everyone takes gun safety glasses...and the ADULTS are ultimately responsible for making sure something like this will not happen. I agree - the gun owner has responsibility.

I agree the father, or whoever was the legal owner of the gun, should be charged.

So so heartbreaking :'(

"The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, and funeral services will follow at Cooke-Campbell Mortuary Chapel.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Haun Cemetery in Luttrell.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to help with funeral expenses at Cooke-Campbell Mortuary in Maynardville."

Rest in peace, dear MaKayla. Prayers for your family and loved ones.

May justice prevail.

Well, it's a crime. 11 year old is charged with first degree murder.

I really question whether an 11 year old can form the intent for first degree murder. I just don't think children have the capacity to understand the consequences of their actions. For sure, he needs help. But trying him as an adult? That's just wrong, imho.

His parents, though, should definitely be charged.

His parents clearly were failing him, he had previously bullied the girl? The parents need to be charged with child endangerment, neglect, any charge that can be thrown at them. Not that the boy should get off scot free, but they need charges as well.

Boy who killed girl over puppy got gun from unlocked closet, sheriff says

The boy used his father’s 12-gauge shotgun, which he got from an unlocked closet, according to the sheriff. The boy is being held on a first-degree murder charge in a juvenile detention center.

The center’s superintendent, Richard Bean, said the boy is the youngest held there on a murder charge in his 44-year career. Bean described him as “very tiny,” weighing about 55 pounds.

He is being detained until a hearing on October 28, his public defender, Edward Miller, told CNN affiliate WATE. He declined to comment further.

Boy, 11, charged with murder after he 'killed his eight-year-old girl neighbor with his dad's shot-gun in a fight over a puppy'

--snip--

The boy has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently in custody. He is set to appear before a judge at11am on Monday for a detention hearing. A judge will later determine whether the child should be charged as an adult.

The boy reportedly came from a family of six children. It's unclear whether he had any mental health issues, but the Department of Child Services is investigating the possibility.

He only weighs 55 lbs? I know it says that he bullied the 8 yr old. But I wonder if he got bullied by his peers so he passed it on by bullying younger kids. Not giving him a pass at all, just trying to understand it. :rose:

I sadly disagree. My friend's 8 yr old has stabbed her twice and tried to suffocate his younger brother by putting him in the fridge and holding the door shut; after having been institutionalized several times prior for similar events. The problem is mental illness in children is not taken seriously enough. Her son has been labeled ADHD (no, my son and I both have that), ODD, and Autistic. None of which even closely resemble the signs and symptoms of his madness. He is either Schizophrenic or Schizoaffective and most likely won't ever receive the therapy and medication he needs until he murders someone. MOO but with this child's history of bullying the victim and coldly shooting her through a window because she said "no" to bringing out her puppy paints a case of calculated premeditation because he knew where that shotgun was and saw his opportunity. Again MOO

Family of 11-year-old charged in girl's shooting death: He didn't pull trigger

What started as a disagreement between two neighborhood children over a puppy ended with the death of one child and murder charges for the other. Now the great-grandparents of the 11-year-old boy facing a first-degree murder count say the boy did not pull the trigger.

Jack and Dianna Houchins, told CNN affiliate WATE on Tuesday that the boy, whom CNN is not naming because of his age, did not kill 8-year-old MaKayla Dyer. Instead, the boy claims another child accidentally fired the fatal shot on October 3."

OK...what other child? There was a lady farther back upthread saying her niece was playing with McKayla and saw what happened, right? This sounds like it may be a "pass the blame" situation, not very encouraging as this little boy already seems to have a myriad of issues. If he did do this and is blaming another child, this shows a clear refusal to take responsibility for his actions.

He will remain incarcerated until he turns 19 according to a court document

19 ??? :gaah:
And I thought 21 might be too early. Pretty sad if he goes on to commit more crimes and proves the courts wrong for releasing him when still in his teens.
IMO

After the shooting, Tiller’s great grandparents claimed another child shot MaKayla Dyer, but according to the court order the boy actually threw the gun out the window to another child who picked up the gun, attempted to hand it back to him and then set it down on the ground. Tiller then reportedly laughed at the girls.
Emph. mine

Major sarcasm alert :
Yep. Pretty sure he'll be safe to let loose on society by 19.
:sigh:
Am wondering a little about his family life.....
MOO

In 8 years, who of you would want this boy living next door? And you will never know because they won't tell us his name. He knew what he was doing. He is a damn good shot.

In 0 years, that is, right now, I still wouldn't want to live next door to his parents, or whoever it was that allowed him such easy access to a firearm. They should be in prison for as long as he is. Were it not for their indifference to safety, MaKayla would still be alive.
