Mayor sends condolences as police give update

At the briefing now, Nashville Mayor John Cooper said he was "overwhelmed by the loss" of life in the shooting.

"14 minutes from start to finish" was all it took to take the lives of six people, he said.

"Those guns stole precious lives from us today from Nashville. In this dark hour let us support each other, let us hug our children a little bit closer tonight."

The shooter was a 28-year-old Nashville woman, armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun, according to police. She was a former student of the school, according to the Nashville Police Chief John Drake.

The three children killed were later identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney. They were all nine years old.

The three adults killed were Cynthia Peak, age 61, Katherine Koonce, age 60, and Mike Hill, age 61.

The woman was named Audrey Hale and lived in Nashville, sources told NBC News.

Police said Hale was armed with two assault-type rifles and a pistol.

Officers have recovered a manifesto and maps of the building relating to "how this is going to take place", said police.

It is important to remember that bullet proof glass in windows makes it impossible to break the window to get people out in case of a fire (which first responders would say is a more likely school emergency than a mass shooting). Bullet proof glass is much heavier so retrofitting a glass window is very difficult AND it is hard for young children to maneuver in case of a fire or other emergency that would necessitate opening the window. Just some info from my previous research for my school after Sandy Hook.
Ok I never thought about that thank you

Unless she was covered head to toe, and there has been no indication that she was, how do you mistake a 28-year-old woman for a teen? That said, if they know she is 28, she must have been identified by now, so we may be getting a name soon...

I'd say that from her social media she could very well be mistaken for a teen.

My 35 year old daughter is constantly mistaken for a student at the school where she teaches, esp. on casual Fridays.

The point still stands though, that public schools have had a higher incidence.
I would not doubt it.

Though I am fully supportive of private schools, it is also good to add a key difference between private schools and public schools.

Private schools have absolute discretion regarding whom they allow to enroll. This enables private schools to quickly boot a variety of problem people for any reason- or for "no stated reason" type reasons

Meanwhile, access to public education is seen as a near right. Public schools, therefore, need to keep a wide variety of problem people enrolled because expelling them can be administratively very difficult. Likewise, not all expulsions are permanent. The public school must then accept the returning problem student back.

The more retained problem people, the greater the chances of being associated with a murderously inclined problem person with a fixation.

This woman may have practiced. But semi-automatic rifles or shotguns (esp shotguns) are deadly at close range even in the hands of a relatively newcomer to shooting. Further, in some states (and I believe TN is one of them) there are high limits on how large a magazine can be. We are trying to have a law in California that the maximum number of bullets shall be 10 (we do have that law, but a recently appointed federal judge has ruled we cannot have that law and now it's headed to the California Supreme Court - and then, perhaps, onward to the Supreme Court).

We don't know which type of automatic weapon it was at this point, they are often made to look the same - our shotgun looks quite like a semi-automatic rifle. Reporters say "AK-47 style" or "Military style" all the time, meaning merely that it's a long gun that's semi-automatic and looks scary.

Were there really no wounded? I have not seen that definitively stated yet.

IMO
In the first press conference the chief of police definitively stated there were no other gunshot wounds. He said directly that all 6 people who were shot were killed.

My point was that in mass shootings, you often have large numbers of people wounded because the shooter indiscriminately shoots into crowded rooms. Here, that didn't happen - she appeared to be targeting people because every person she shot, she killed.

In the PC from a few minutes ago LE now confirm this is a "targeted attack." They did not clarify if she was looking for specific people or what but it is clear that she did not indiscriminately shoot into classrooms.

Maybe her plan was to shoot indiscriminately into classrooms after she murdered her target and she wasn't able to because of the quick actions of LE.

Police explain how shooter gained entry

Police say the shooter, a 28-year-old white woman from Nashville, gained entry to the school by shooting through a door.

They named the shooter as Audrey Hale.

During their investigation they discovered a "manifesto" and a "map drawn out of how all this was going to take place".

Police said they have a theory about motive, but they cannot confirm it at this time.

People like to talk about the practical actions that are necessary to prevent crime (and I agree!) but you have to ask WHAT HAPPENEd that we have thousands of people without a conscience. Each time there's an individual person who decides to do this, picks up a weapon, and kills innocent people they don't know in cold blood. How do you get there? What the $%^& is wrong with our society?
Right? I mean how does someone decide that murdering people who have nothing to do with them, babies, is a good solution to their problems?

There was the West Nickel Mines PA shooting in an Amish school back in 2006. Probably more but that was the first one that came to mind.

Department of Homeland Security compiles the data on both private and public school shootings (there was the school program in the Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles, as well). But I can't find anyway to make the data disaggregated and really don't have time to figure it out today - they just combine it all into "school shootings" in most of their data presentation (which is very interesting).

Dept of Education retrieved data for both, as well, dividing it up by suspected cause:

I think the cause here was a combination of suicidality and revenge by a former student. An insane former student, to be sure.

Police said she identified as transgender, and online profiles show Audrey used 'he/him' pronouns.

I wonder if we will eventually learn the other location she thought of shooting-up?

It was also revealed the attacker was a trans woman.

Did LE reveal that was a trans woman? The article doesn't say and the press conference doesn't mention that she was trans. Where are they getting this information? Hopefully not from social media gossip. Can anyone please confirm?

Shooter used 'assault-style' weapons

Police said the shooter used two "AR-style weapons" as well as a handgun, and that at least two of the guns were obtained legally.

They are currently searching a residence on Brightwood Avenue.

Police have not given a motive, but said they have found a manifesto.

They named the shooter, who died at the scene, as Audrey Hale, a transgendered woman.

BBM

Seems like the locked door is not really an effective deterrent for someone with a gun.
