TN - Tyre Nichols, beaten to death by 5 Memphis Police Officers, Jan 2023 *officers charged*

  • #21
Tyre Nichols' mother spoke to CNN about seeing her son in the hospital after his traffic stop.

"Around 4:00 in the morning, the doctors called from St. Francis and said, 'Mrs. Wells, do you know your son's in the hospital?' And I said, 'yes, I was advised by the police officers.' He said, 'why aren't you here?' And I said, 'the police officers said that I couldn't come, because he was under arrest.' The doctor proceeded to tell me that my son had went into cardiac arrest and that his kidneys were failing," RowVaughn Wells told CNN about why she was delayed in getting to her son.

She said her son was "already gone" by the time she and her husband got to the hospital.

I don't want to watch the video... but I do think it is important that the video is released (in full), people need to know what is happening, all too often, in the U.S. I think Tennessee still has the death penalty, I hope it applies in this case.

Live blog, includes link to press conference with Tyre's parents and their attorney.

Of note: LE is not finding any probable cause for pulling him over for reckless driving.

Judging by the reaction from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation it's going to be inhumane.

Honestly I think it's a mistake to release the video after 6 pm on a Friday night. I hope if there are protests they remain peaceful and no one gets hurt.
I know, right? To release the video on a Friday night is just insane. What are they thinking?

Anecdotally in social media I have seen a mix of people in the community hoping protests remain peaceful, glad that such a decisive action was taken so quickly, and skeptical that things would have gone the same way if the officers were white.

Note: this is anecdotal from what I've observed reading Memphian social media. I am not in Memphis (nor am I Black) so don't have direct knowledge.

I always think, if cops are doing this sort of stuff in this day and age, where bodycam and other cameras are everywhere, it must have been even worse before there was so much video.
Right? Ugh…

I am sad for the family, for the Memphis police and all involved. I'm not sure if I need to see the video that will be released soon, but I do favor transparency and honesty in law and government. I hope as a society, we can remain civil, will think with our minds, not our emotions.

The police chief herself said you would see "acts that defy humanity" in the video. This will be bad.

Releasing the video on a Friday/weekend may actually not be all that bad of an idea. In the event that there may be some violence or rioting, kids will not be in school/out on buses, and workplaces, such as offices, etc., will be closed (therefore less traffic and people needing to be out). I would hope they are prepared and have extra law enforcement, and especially back-up, at the ready.

His story and those of others that day was the first of what would become 40ish articles from me holding the California DMV accountable for their actions. Nichols unknowingly contributed to setting in motion a series of stories that would better the lives of many Californians.

I'm hoping this could bring comfort to those who knew him well or didn't know him at all but are impacted by the situation in Memphis. I'll remember him as an upbeat and remarkably patient young man, despite navigating a difficult circumstance. May his memory be a blessing.

While I wish I still had the full interview with Nichols to share, the video I shared is all I have. And for those who may want to read that story or more about Nichols' experience that day, a more complete video and story is here --> https://sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article215605210.html

They need to be charged with murder. This insanity has to stop. Black men should not die during routine traffic stops. Period.

No one should die during a routine traffic stop!

ETA: I'm not "wanting" to see this video but I don't understand what drove these officers to do this. Did it start because he refused to stop running or what?? Will we learn more from the video?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis’ mayor and police chief sat down Friday morning for their first local interview with a Memphis station, hours before the expected release of video showing the traffic stop that led to the death of Tyre Nichols earlier this month.

“I wasn’t prepared for what I saw,” Davis said, describing the video. “I was horrified, hurt, angered at what I saw. In my 36 years in law enforcement, I don’t think I have witnessed the disregard for a human being displayed in this video.”

The video must be absolutely horrible to have this kind of tension before its even released. I don’t want to watch it and probably won’t, but a part of me feels I should bear witness to what happened to poor Tyre. I’m thinking of his family and community tonight and hoping for change. MOO

During a news conference Friday at a Memphis church, Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, said the family was very satisfied with the legal process so far, and he urged people, if they needed to protest, to do so peacefully.

“We want peace. We do not want any type of uproar. We do not want any type of disturbance. We want peaceful protest,” he said. “The family is very satisfied with the process, with the police chief, with the D.A. [district attorney].”

Also speaking at the news conference, lawyers for the family, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, applauded the district attorney for the swiftness with which the charges were brought against the officers.
