Tornadoes rake Dallas area, more than a dozen hurt

OMG, hollyblue! That is the stuff of nightmares! My parents used to live right off of 287. that is so, so scary. I almost had to change my pants after watching that video - I cannot imagine the fear IRL. Gee whiz.

The sound, the sight of that. I would have done a fast u-turn and gotten the he!! out of there, fast.

Did everyone here from the area make out all right?

Well, the last I heard from my friend, her kids were in the gym at their school, which is in Lewisville and she was right in the middle of the storm in Denton. But no tornadoes there. Arlington is just 40 miles from her.

I don't know where her husband works or where his family lives but everyone was texting back and forth and keeping tabs on one another.

Her dad, who just moved there from California, thought it was exciting. He will probably drive all around to see the damage and will be thunderstruck. He's deaf, as is her mom and step-mom, so I don't know how they get warnings. I guess from the t.v. but they can't hear the sirens. My friend wasn't scared. I would have been. I've had nightmares about tornadoes my whole life.

Yeah, we have earthquakes but they don't bother me. It's just not the same thing at all. Every year that region has tornado season. Every year there is the risk of such intense destruction. It's got to be the worst of natural disasters, really, because it happens so often around the country and is so devastating.

The thing about doing a U-turn and booking...tornados are known to be erratic and you don't know which direction they will go, nor when/where they are going to pull up and touch down again. There used to be guidelines (I think it was to go in a direction 90 degrees from the current direction of movement)...

Normally tornadoes move in a Northeastern pattern so you turn at right angles to avoid them. This advice is for most tornadoes.

However I've seen, and ran, from a tornado moving from the southwest to the northeast. In fact I looked in the direction a tornado will normally come from and the sky was clear! When I looked the other direction it was like Cr*p! Green sky, brown funnel coming totally from the wrong direction.

Problem is multiple tornadoes can form and reform in any particular storm. Best thing to do is keep informed thru weather channels, internet, tv, social media and watch the sky.

Our tornadoes today were rain wrapped and you couldn't see them until it was too late. Lucky noone was killed today. It is still moving through the state but to the north and east. I think we may have more coming, but not sure when. Thanks for all the good thought.

I have only heard that the school was not hit and no deaths have been reported at all. At 10:00 local ABC is doing an hour long report. I am praying no one was killed anywhere in the storms.

So far it's all stayed north of us but we are under very heavy, dark cloud cover. It's very still here right now, warm and humid. Calm before the storm? I sure hope not.

There were no fatalities in the tornado outbreak in Dallas and surrounding cities. There were some serious injuries and many many homes and businesses hit and destroyed. Many people in this area are so thankful tonight for no fatalities and I am one of them. PTL
