Andrew Harding, BBC, tweeted this witness poses a serious problem for the prosecution, presumably because he didn't hear what the prosecution witnesses heard. But...

It also means he never heard Oscar screaming like a woman...and in providing that explanation, Oscar's defence team conceded what the prosecution's witnesses heard.

MOO

But it also could show that those who were much further away were not in a position to distinguish high pitched crying as a man or a woman or very clearly at all.

I don't understand all these people and their LACK OF CURIOUSITY!!!..

  • #164
And he also noted that between the words "screaming" and "crying" was a matter of personal interpretation.

He also said that he couldn't be sure it was indeed Oscar crying.

Didn't hear any screaming. Didn't hear shots. Didn't hear cricket bat.

So, why is he testifying? ;) Other than to tell us how emotional Oscar was after shooting his girlfriend to death, discount what prosecution witnesses testified to hearing, and how rude South African police were?

I thought he said he thought the first two sets of people who asked for interviews were probably media and they were very rude. He declined. He did say when the SAPS arrived, the following week that they were extremely polite and helpful. Maybe I misheard or misinterpreted.

one thing that is clear.. everybody who was a neighbour has PTSD in a big way.. none of them have recovered from it.

They're back..

Nel: Were any lights on in accused's?

N: When?

Nel: When you left the house.

N says he could not see and did not notice

  • #171
Nel: Were lights on in OP's house. N - Not sure at what point.
Nel: Before you went out of your house. N- couldn't see because he was checking the back of his (N's) house.

Very curious him not hearing second set of bangs.

  • #173
Sorry I'm getting confused, and way past my bedtime. But point I was trying to say he said "man" not "woman."
ETA: and this part he said when Roux was asking him questions.

Yes, he definitely said a man not a woman but that is not in dispute. You are quite right there. Sorry to hear you are so tired. I am very lucky this trial is due my daytime.

After my initial post there have been comments that listeners also heard Mr N say OP was crying like a woman. I apologise, I did not hear that and I thought I was listening hard. So if I am incorrect, many apologies supernovaNic.

His wife woke up to a bang so he could be like me, just a really deep sleeper. People can hoover around me and I won't wake!

Nel: Defence case that if you hit door with a bat it may sound like gunshot. And that door was broken down with at least 3 bats. You never heard that.
N: Never heard 3 blows. When he gave statement based on what he heard. Didn't hear other things.

back on the saddle, and talking about lights.. . he just opened his front door, he didn't turn his lights on , just to find out where the sound was coming from.

Nel. it is the defence case, that Oscar hit the door with a cricket bat ,that sounded like gunshots.. also. its the defence case, that the door was broken down with at least 3 blows of the bat.

Mr N. I know those things. .. but at the time I gave my statement as to what I heard.

all over for mr N..

Nel takes a seat.

Roux back for another serve..

Mr N.. the loudness of the crying. it was very loud.. . that man was crying for his life, I cant explain how loud it was. it was

roux. did you hear a woman screaming very loud??

Mr N. . no.

Mr N goes back to silverwoods estate ,to give lip to police officers in his spare time.

  • #177
Nel not so hard on him.

  • #178
Couldn't 'screaming' and 'crying' be the same thing. People hearing the same sounds and just interpreting it with a different word?

I looked up the definition of 'screaming' and it says "give a long, loud, piercing cry or cries expressing extreme emotion or pain".

  • #179
Nel asks again if he ever heard any blows or bangs.

N: I gave my statement in terms of what I heard....In terms of bangs I never heard anything like that.

Roux up, asking about crying. Witness says "it was quite loud. I don't really know how to describe it. It was very loud.'

And witness also adds that if a woman had been screaming 'I would have heard it.'
