She doesn't look sad to me, she looks MAD.

Mad, not at herself, but that she was put in that position... like it's not her fault or something.

She has struck me as "inconvenienced" this whole time.
IMO.

Seemed like she was about to cry when they said not guilty. Then she changed quick....

I think she thought she was about to hear not guilty on everything when he said the first one was not guilty.

I agree!

Baby paid with his life, but his little life is going to protect every other little life from being hurt by her going forward. I predict LWOP. She's not fit to be in society where children are.

A temper like that, she would be the worst kind of mother. May she never get that opportunity.

Before rendering a sentence, the judge is asking about merging charges.

Another 30 minute break while the judge and attorneys review case law regarding merging of the charges.

She left the baby with his dad (Julian) when the baby was three months old. She went to Mexico. At some point, she returned to where she lived in Florida but wanted the baby to stay with Julian full time after that. According to Julian, the mom only saw the baby 2-3 times after her return from Mexico for a few hours each time.
I hate to be that person but I read this and thought, "sounds like she didn't care too much about her son." MOO.

Anyone else ever felt like this is the judge's first trial? He seems confused and unsure of himself at times. The way he read the verdict and dismissed the jury without asking counsel if they wanted to poll the jury also stood out to me. He also didn't do the colloquy with the defendant about whether she was gonna testify or not, did he?

Anyway, she couldn't have just broken up with the boyfriend?? It's not like the boyfriend was some great catch. Geez. Were there no other eligible college men she could've dated? What a senseless crime. Poor baby. RIP JD.

Edited to add; I'm guessing Ms Pageant Queen has some anger issues unrelated to this relationship/baby and she took it out on JD.

Not much happening down in that area of Georgia, so he may be a bit frazzled with a case of this magnitude.
Now I'm worried about appeals...
IMO.

That's what is worrying me too - appeals. He's pulled up the statutes and rules of evidence a handful of times and read them out loud. Then at one point he asked the defense atty what a certain sentence in the law means. He seems befuddled.

First time I've heard a prosecutor reference Scarface in closing argument.

How is it that the judge and both counsels seem confused and surprised by the charges, merges and sentencing?

Court is live again.
