New Orleans is now under a state of emergency. Mayor Landrieu didn't mention assistance to those who cannot evacuate on their own. For Gustav, the entire city was evacuated, including pets. The train was put in use, and it worked out well. The cost must have been exhorbitant, and I don't see the present administration repeating the measures.

What programs? There is like a couple of days until this hurricane arrives. What programs are going to evacuate people that aren't able to do it? All of this is easier said then done.
And then people are blamed for not evacuating when they probably didn't have reliable transportation to even be able to do so.

All city's have evacuation plans. Its just that the people sat on their @sses and thought, oh its not going to hit us. And then they were complaining and moaning when it did hit them! There were buses ready to evacuate people, but people were not listening. The mayor of New Orleans had 1000 buses ready to load people up. Ambulances were also ready to go out and transport people in wheelchairs etc. If people are not going to heed the warnings to GET OUT, then they need to be willing to live with the consequences, and I don't think they have any rights to complain. People who stay despite being warned to get out, should be willing to accept that they are not going to be guaranteed emergency services like they normally would. That is just what Fort Myers has announced via the weather channel. You either get out, or live with the fact that emergency services are not going to be readily available to you!

Why should emergency personal put their lives in danger, because a few stupid people (no offense!) refuse to get out and get to safety? New Orleans had 3-4 days to prepare. They knew a hurricane was brewing, they just didn't know where it was gonna hit until 2 days prior. They knew when it was going to hit, so at that time they should have got the hell out of dodge! If that had of been me, I would have gotten out at the 3-4 days mark. Always better to be safe then sorry!

Also people are well aware of this storms potential, even if they think they are going to be affected they should make plans now, instead of waiting until the last minute! People knew about Katrina a week in advance, and they have known about Issac now for at least 4 days now. You cannot sit here and tell me that they have had no warning! I would get out and stay out, even if it may not hit me. Not sit on my butt and hope that it went around me.

Sorry but this is a very sensitive issue for me. People are so keen on blaming New Orleans Mayor, and the government, but the people they SHOULD be blaming is themselves, because they sat on the butts and did nothing to attempt to get out of the hurricane area. There was public transportation, and they had AMPLE time to get out! People who take no initiative need to learn that there are consequences for their behavior, and they should take responsibility for their actions!

Not attacking anyone in particular. This is just my very strong opinion!

Louisiana Governor is telling people who live in low lying Parish's to evacuate now! It is two days until landfall, and people need to act now. This is exactly what New Orleans mayor did back when Katrina was gonna hit. How much more clearer can you get?? Also when a state of emergency has been declared for your state or city (New Orleans's) and you don't evacuate, then there is something wrong. A state of emergency would not be declared unless you were in harms way, and additional resources needed to be brought in!

Landrieu emphasized that there will be no shelters of last resort, so people need to be prepared to evacuate, should it come to that.

Landrieu pressed residents to prepare to live, possibly for days, without water or power. If an evacuation is called, he said staying is a bad decision

So they might have a couple days to evacuate, and what do you propose people without transportation do? I realize you say that you feel strongly on the matter, but human beings aren't going to be able to fly out of there if they haven't got cars.

If the plan is activated, low-lying areas in the south shore and outside the hurricane levees would begin evacuating 50 hours before the onset of tropical storm winds.

The City of New Orleans' assisted evacuation plan is designed to help residents who don't have the means to evacuate for themselves, as well as tourists. It would be activated in case of a mandatory evacuation of the city.

Anyone needing assistance from the city of New Orleans to evacuate can pre-register at the city's website.

There is help out there, people just need to take it, and realize that they are just as vulnerable as anyone. It is not going to turn and miss you just because you decide to sit on your butt's and do nothing! ACT NOW, or don't complain if you are stranded because you have had plenty of time to make plans and get out!

If you would read my posts, I have stated that there are options made available to them! Buses can be used to get out. The city has made plenty of options available to them. Also they have friends and neighbors who have vehicles. There are options, people just need to be willing to use them!

Is the city going to provide the buses? There really is very little time left, and I fail to see the desire to blame these people, because the storm that supposedly was going to Fl might be going their way instead.
