Mental illness still carries stigma

County-music star Mindy McCready’s life was an open book on the things people don’t hesitate to jabber about in public and on television these days: infidelity and heartbreak, drinking and drugs, domestic violence and stints in jail.

But the real cause of McCready’s death on Sunday, believed to be suicide, underscores the stigma that mental-health issues still carry and the pain borne, often without lifesaving support, by those who suffer and their families.

The brain, like the liver or the heart, is an organ. But it is an astonishingly complex organ. When it turns on its owner, the results can be tragic.

The stigma of mental illness is isolating. And it isn’t just others who perpetuate that stigma. People who have mental-health issues also may let their condition create self-blame and doubt, preventing them from seeking the necessary medical treatment. Or they may fear harassment or job discrimination.

*I'm praying one day mental illness will be seen for what it is.
It's an illness and nothing to be ashamed of.

I for one have not been upset by "the slightest questions". In fact, if my posts have been read, you will see I have admitted to having my own unanswered questions.

But the smear campaign and digging up any negative info out there on her to prove how horrible she was is different to me. When unnamed sources' info is accepted as fact but then quotes from LE are questioned, that's a problem to me.

I'd rather wait for accurate information than jump on a blame wagon.

Try as we might we can't control content of the media or the postings or opinion of another. All we can do is post on the information available to us at the time.I'm forming my thoughts based on comments from McCready and what to me seems to be a delay by LE in calling the death of Wilson a suicide.
I'm not taking unnamed sources as being factual vs a quote from LE.
My only problem was why this quote was given to one media outlet (TMZ) and there was no follow up by other media as they were unable to confirm.
Going by memory alone...I believe CNN tried to confirm and was unable to get a response from Moss.
I'm also waiting for facts ie: results to come in on the death of David Wilson.

IMO

I wonder what was going on with David before his death.

This shows he was arrested December 24th.

"They told him he couldn't get some silver ribbon; he kind of gave a little attitude and freaked out, and they arrested him and left the truck in the parking lot." "He was kind of person who couldn't handle a lot of stress," the source says. "There was something unusual going on for something like that to happen, because it isn't like him." Heber Springs Police Department records show he spent brief amount of time in jail for the misdemeanor disorderly conduct offense, but was released later that evening after paying a $225 bond.

I've wondered about what effects Mindy's brain injury/damage could have caused. This is a very interesting article IMO

Snipped:

Did Mindy McCready’s brain injury kill her?

Many people know about Mindy’s violent relationship with the father of her oldest son, Billy McKnight. McKnight was arrested in 2005 on charges of attempted murder for beating and choking Mindy. Mindy suffered from seizures and she attributed her brain injury to the abuse by McKnight.

Because of the nature of domestic violence, victims are susceptible to repeated injuries, which increase symptoms. These symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, confusion, difficulty making decisions and solving problems (which appears as poor judgment to the public), headaches, memory problems, depression and feeling overwhelmed.

In a study conducted by Dr. Jonathan Silver and his colleagues, individuals with a history of traumatic brain injury have significantly higher occurrence for psychiatric disorders and suicide attempts in comparison with those without head injury. They also have a poorer quality of life.

How many more Americans like Mindy McCready need to commit suicide before we take brain injury serious in this country?

I find it really interesting that Mindy never attempted suicide until after she was nearly killed. After the 2005 beating, several attempts were made until she finally succeeded.

I believe her brain damage played a big role.

JMO and seems to be the opinion of several specialists.

Do you have a link for this, about how all of her suicide attempts were after 2005? TIA.

IMO, what we have here is two people with terrible addictions they could not beat and the end result was suicide. One not able to handle the loss of the other choose the same way out in the same place. It's just a tragic example of the worst addictions, no more...no less. I hope they both can RIP now and the kids find loving stable homes.

It is very possible that her brain injury could have caused some of her behavior. It should be noted that seizures can be caused by those going through withdrawl or trying to detox.

Found another article that includes the petitions filed by McKnight and Tim McCready. It was written early on,but was new to me so thought I would share as I hadn't seen it posted here.

http://www.eonline.com/news/386259/...-she-was-drinking-taking-rx-drugs-not-bathing

The things that stood out to me were that she tried to hit her father and was verbally abusive to Zander.

Sorry if this offends but I see it as postworthy.

Unless the damage to the brain was found directly after she was beaten via a hospital trip at the time,we only have Mindy supposing that the beating was what caused her brain injury.
For all we know she could have fallen down the steps, fallen in a tub or been in a car accident in one of her drug and alcohol fueled stupors.
I'm not a fan of anyone that uses violence, but he does,as a parent have the right to petition the courts. If the father of Mindy is correct in his petition he (Mcknight) was correct in feeling concern about his child.
Seems to me the children were used in a power play and no one had true concern for them.
Mindy fought until she had them but then (according to T.McCready) petition couldn't rouse herself to care for them due to wallowing in her grief.

yes-- where is the evidence brain damage was caused by BMK?

and speaking of BMK, she had a restraining order to not see him after he beat her and she still continued to see him and even got pregnant by him? talk about making bad decisions!*

a very interesting LKL from 2005: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0511/11/lkl.01.html

*an ex merely threatened to hit me and i made sure i never saw or spoke with him again ;)

No. We have experts saying it.

Have you seen the pictures?
He should still be in prison IMO.

She almost died.

He has no right to be around children.

What happens when the little boy spills his milk? Brain damage?

He should have no rights.

We have information from the Dr.Drew show that said she had brain damage.
This was determined after she suffered a seizure while doing the Dr.Drew show and was taken to the hospital.IIRC.
As far as I know there is no proof that the damage was caused by McKnight.
We do have Mindy saying she thought the damage was caused by being beaten and that is possible, but we have no proof that it is true.
Yes...I have seen the pictures and it was awful.
At least the child might have some milk to spill while in McKnights care.
Sounds like Mindy couldn't even get out of bed to get them milk.
This points to her being selfish. We have all suffered through grief in our lifetime, but when you have small children you have to move on as their needs should be more important than your pain.
I'm not at all advocating that McKnight should have custody.Only that he has a right to petition the courts for any rights as a parent.
IMO

Later all. I'll check back when the results are available for David Wilson

seems only mindy claimed it was due to billy:

McCready terrified her season three "Rehab" co-stars when she suffered from a seizure while talking to her roommate Mackenzie Phillips. Despite media reports that claimed it was related to drug or alcohol abuse, she says it was caused by "a head injury from an ex-boyfriend" who "beat" her and it was left untreated for years.
