I deleted my last two comments because I might be wrong. I'm not so sure after watching it a few times, and after Lavy verified it was legitimate surveillance footage from the area she was staying.

This was the first thing they released when it was reported that she is missing.

I can't tell if it is her or not. It is very close to where she is staying. And we know that she was out that night. She told the landlord she is going to buy food, Taylan said they went to a bar. We don't know the times though.

Yes, exactly. Early on there was a still image grabbed from this video floating around, I believe some bogus new agency published it with a title "Running from scene" or something along those lines. I'll try and dig it up.

I think that hat is more of a knit cap. I'm not really seeing the brim of the cap she wears. The jacket is similar.

I'm convinced those aren't the boots we've seen. Those do not have a heel or a wedge. They are very flat boots.

And I agree that woman looks a little bigger and heavier. Sarai was described as 5'2", about 100 pounds.

I get the impression she has a phone up to her right ear, held in her right hand, at the end.

It looks like the woman in the video is wearing a scarf (something loose and flowing in the back) and not a cap on her head. This is most noticeable towards the end of the video. She also looks much heavier and the boots don't seem to match.

Response to a deleted comment: Nah, it only looks shaky because it's someone using a video camera to record the local TV news (you can glimpse the frame of the TV in the last image)
The news would have spliced the video from different camera angles.
We have them on stores, inside and out.

This doesn't look like her cap. Also, she was wearing light colored socks over the tops of her boots at the mall, or her jeans are cuffed over her boots, and these boots look different.

More from Turkish press

There is a new suspect. Police is tracing somebody who had seen next to SS (earlier that day?)

The suspect met her through social media. Its been determined that they've been mailing/messaging. After her murder the guy left Istanbul and seen in 3 different cities since then.

LE is also looking for 10 different people for blood samples, inluding Ziya T.

22 days after her death and an internet contact hasn't been interviewed or found?

  • #953
Sorry guys, I'm just trying to establish a timeline for her movements

Jan. 20th

1) Sarai is seen on mall video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=KRVfjJ1Kai8&NR=1
9.59 am 1/20/2013 is marked on Sarai’s uploaded photo on her IG picture of winding stream (which A. says they took in Amersdam. (Not sure if I'm permitted to link to IG site, so I won't.)

2) While Ms. Sierra was in Turkey, she spoke with her sons via Skype. "The last time they spoke to her was on Jan. 20," he said. http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/02/how_husband_of_slain_staten_is.html

Does anyone recall if any 'specific', quotable' information was released about where she went dinner/club or anywhere else on this last night (Jan 20th) before her flight?

So really they have no idea it seems, and that maybe hope was too high it was Z. Maybe it was one of the Internet contacts after all...

He is from the East, if you locate the province he was born in on the map as relative to prosperous Western Turkey.

I was inclined towards southeast, but he turned out to be from Black Sea region. Laz people do have expanded families and tribalistic social structures.

Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2

If you follow that logic, almost the whole of Turkey is in the East, relative to Istanbul/Izmir.

I'm glad the police seem to be following many leads but due to the media, it seems like they don't have a clue either way.

I don't know. My gut tells me this killer likely isn't Turkish.
Rape, robbery, I'd have no problem thinking some bad Istanbul guy did that, but there's too much involved here. And I think they would have zeroed in on him by now.

Could be American, or any other English speaking nationality, maybe someone who made her feel comfortable and that she believed was a safe guy.

It's just my opinion but he seems so devious and twisted and sick. Such over the top brutality and risk, and the missing Ipad and phone and coat... I didn't jump to robbery first, (went there 2nd), but first I went to 'something incriminating is on those devices"

If DNA proves it's not the garbage collectors, etc. I do think he either would have known the area and had access to a car, or was simply smooth talkin'- lots-in-common sort of guy who walked along, enticed her on a ruse until he found crime of opportunity location- right time/right place.

From day 1, I've come up with a range of scenarios in my head of possible crime scenarios. And most of them come from true crime situations reported right here in the US press and having been committed here. I know, I know, anyone can have a dark side, but it seems so, I don't know, alien, to the Turkish people. The regular citizens seemed so shocked. They carried pictures of her in the streets. They have their share of domestic and political violence, I get that, but this was a 5'2" female tourist.

If a young female's body was found in an isolated area, off a highway near caves where garbage men/homeless people are known to hang out, in NY or any major city, the garbage men/ homeless people might not head the top of the suspect list.
NewYork625, what do you think?

Like Cmac and others said, it's hard for some of us to wrap our heads around the homeless guy theories.
And to all you tourists, I'm not saying we have a lot of murders in USA cities, not at all, but just that it isn't so shocking to us.
Anyone agree or disagree?

Here we go again. I'm about to lose my mind.

It's good though, all this release of information is adding up in a sense. First, they released Z's name, then they released the Internet contact angle. If LE really thinks this Internet contact is their prime suspect, then the previous release of information was perhaps to throw off this Internet contact's guard off, as it is said in today's reports that this Internet contact is known to have travelled to three different cities after the murder.

Whoever the perp is, the end is nigh.

I don't think the perp will turn out to be a foreigner. Short term stay foreigners would not be capable of evading LE for so long. If perp however, turns out to be a foreigner, almost surely he will be a permanent resident, having contacts, at least passable Turkish (which as I understand, is a difficult language for most Europeans and Americans) and such to be able to stay on the run domestically.

Problem is, permanent residency is tightly regulated, domicils and employment and such is controlled by Turkish National Police, foreigners branch.

If another permanent resident disappears right after this incident, LE would see it as a red flag and would follow up and check what is going on.

For all these reasons, whoever the perp is, he will be a Turkish National.

My guess is either LE didn't release anything until they were confident and information release would serve a purpose on behalf of investigation. And it must have taken time for FBI to request the full extent of SS communication from relevant companies. (Apple, Samsung, IG, Google, Facebook, Skype/Microsoft) Aren't most of the social networking websites and other online facilities SS used HQ'd in the US?

It would make more sense for FBI to fetch those information and then turn it over to the Turkish LE.

There are arrangements, procedures and channels for Turkish LE to request information about their investigations from US companies, however following the regular way would have taken more time then a direct FBI fetch and turn over action.

Thank you KrysJP and New York625. I agree about the shirt also.

I'd hoped Lavy Tashim or Alpmighty could translate the Turkish text below the video to see if they are stating it 'is' or 'might' be her, but it looks like none are on the forum now.

I'm curious if the LE believed it was her when they released the video, (as she was still missing)

This video would have been taken a little after midnight the same day she was later seen at the mall.

Just trying to go back and start from square 1.

Will do.
