She holds her phone in her right hand to photograph.

Here's a photo of her in Amsterdam holding the phone to her left ear with her left hand

I'm sorry. That photo was clearly NOT taken in Amsterdam. That photo is clearly from NYC. Anyhow.

Yes but you can't really apply traveling to other Islamic countries to Istanbul. Turkey is secular and Istanbul is especially westernized. Up until recently, due to changes made by Erdogan, even if you chose to wear a headscarf, if you were at school, or held a job at a government run agency, airport, post office etc you were not allowed to wear your head scarf there....this was to keep separation of religion and state.

In Istanbul its not just a matter of people being ok with not having your head covered, its that the vast majority of people, I'd guess at least 70% do not cover their head in any way. You would actually stand out more by covering your head. Trust me on this, I lived in Istanbul for over a year.

So your assumption about standing out in Istanbul for not being covered are incorrect.
They have similar headscarf rules in Morocco. Women in Algeria arent allowed to wear hijab or headscarf at fancy establishments and while u dont see too many hijabs and scarves on the main streets of metropolitan areas in these countries, mentaliy drives perception. If general conservative dress, however one defines it, wasnt an issue, it would never figure its way into the discourse. This is my opinion, but dont get me wrong, if a psycho's on your heals and trying to kill you, nothing you wear or dont wear is gonna save you. And no, SS absolutely was not killed because of her clothes.

Chief of Police / Superintendant / Grand Visar of the Turkish National Police has either been misquoted or mistranslated.

Grand Vezir is good as well, he'd have laughed if he heard that.

Is that an earring or a hearing aid in Z's right ear? Or something like bluetooth?

That's probably another mis-translation or a blind. Just can't buy it.

Not in a New York minute is a girl like Sarai going to wear the exact same shirt two days in a row. LOL
KrsP, poster from SI New York where are you? We need you in this fashion debate, girl!

Also if they saw her on video wearing a coat....but found her without her coat....I never understood how you could even tell she was wearing the exact thing...because how do you tell what someone is even wearing in the first place when its covered by a coat?

Can any of our Turkish members spot which building that is with the bright pink signs/ awnings/flowerboxes, whatever?

Well, now it's starting to look like second floor overhang with a balcony behind it having two bright pink cloth signs.

I dunno. I'm starting to feel a bit foolish chasing down an unknown woman on an unknown street in Turkey from a photo from three weeks ago.

Ok. I hear you but no one on this board is saying the media is trust worthy. I'm pretty sure we all agree that what they publish is more about selling papers then facts. No ones arguing that point.

;) I know..lol

It was a volley to the "media" who read the board, to watch out, I have a business idea on how to keep them accountable. That is all. :D

Well, if this woman is SS, the orange/red top is easily identified.

At this point I'm thinking this was a random guy LE pulled off the street.....and it looks like he has lots of earwax.

The only reason conservative dress wove its way into this discussion is not because its an issue in Istanbul, but because of misconceptions people who have never been to Turkey have about Istanbul.

I can't speak to how it goes in Morocco as I've never been there. But I can tell you how it is in Istanbul. And please believe me when I tell you in Istanbul it is NOT an issue. Turkish girls wear tank tops, short skirts, bikinis, high heels, tight pants, everything you name it. Your assumption based on your experiences in other countries is being incorrectly applied to Turkey.

And again the only reason people questioned it is because they were making False assumption about a country they were personally unfamiliar with.

Since you have not been to Turkey, I think you should not assume it is or isn't a certain way, but learn from what people who are familiar with it, can tell you about it.

In other parts of Turkey, manner of dress is much more concervative. But in Istanbul it is not much different then you'd see people dressing in a large American city. Most Turkish women dress very stylish.

OT but when I read the case of "Synchronized Drowning" in Utah, I thought Turkish law enforcement does deserve some praise for their efforts on the SS case

KANAB, Utah (AP) - Authorities say they've recovered the body of a second young woman from Turkey who apparently drowned in Lake Powell.

Officials say divers found the body of 21-year-old Betul Eryildirim Thursday evening in about 30 feet of water near the Bullfrog Marina.

Her 21-year-old friend, Merve Tokel, was found floating face down Wednesday in the same popular swimming area.

Kane County officials say the two women were good friends with birthdays only eight days apart, and they'd been working in the area for the summer.

Authorities say they don't expect foul play and believe the women's deaths are accidents.

Play nice. Bet types English far better than most of us type Turkish.

One is don't needed spelling skills when one are a typing English word because duh message posting box have automatic spelling correction feature. One are only needing grammar skill because message box is not don't knows no English grammar.

This I knows.

Thanks. I hope we can just put this issue to rest.
I just want to say that I can understand an American point of view of wanting to be respectful and dress conservatively when in a country with a large Muslim population. I have seen the live street cams which show a very wide spectrum of dress among people in Istanbul. However, I believe that some Americans might be sensitive (meritted or not) to possibly offending Muslims, and might feel compelled to dress more conservatively. The US may have a reputation as being aggressive at times, but we are a blended nation, and many private citizens are sensitive to wrongs our country has committed in the past, and do try to be respectful of all religions and cultures.

I hope I expressed myself well enough. I don't feel I write as eloquently as some.

Nicely said.

Can you please send this to the women tourists in Egypt who insist on wearing halter tops and miniskirts in public?
