If Alan were targeted for some reason, perhaps, it was something seemingly innocuous. For all we know, he could have received a text stating, "Hey, I'm running late. Can you swing by my house to get the paperwork?"
IMO, there is no way that our Missing Subject would have been taking any side journeys prior to a 7:00am meeting. He is portrayed as being regimented, buttoned up. In his line of work, preparation is required; review of data, his analysis and recommendation would need to be prepared. As a consummate professional, he would want to review and prep for the call. He wouldn't be squeezing in other activities so close to that call IMO.
We don't know if this was a standard conference call where Alan was required to be there to listen or if he were going to be an active participant.

You're most likely right. But this scenario requires that someone took the time to not only take his life but dispose of him so that he is not found. By all accounts, he seems so "squeaky clean". An accident, car jacking, or self harm would have surely turned him up by now. This seems to be more targeted. And that's where someone will need to talk in order for this case to be resolved. IMO of course.
Given where the car was allegedly found, a stop at the land fill would have been easy IWT. I'm so sorry to even type that, it is so disturbing.
